CPI(M) on the back foot as its 1977 alliance with Jan Sangh resurfaces
A new controversy erupted on the eve of the Nilambur Assembly byelection on Wednesday over an alliance between the CPI(M) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the late 1970s.
An alleged revelation by CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan during a media interview about the alliance put the LDF on the defensive with the rival United Democratic Front (UDF) seizing the opportunity to capitalise on the dispute.
The volatile political rivalry between the UDF and LDF turned more intense on the election eve when both sides sharpened their accusations over allying with communal forces.
Former BJP president K. Raman Pillai validated Mr. Govindan's statement that the CPI(M) had contested the 1977 election with the support of the RSS. Mr. Pillai told a TV channel that the CPI(M) had gleefully accepted the RSS support in the wake of the Emergency.
The dispute put the LDF on the back foot in Nilambur at a time when it kept on attacking the UDF for taking the support of the Jamaat-e-Islami. In an attempt to turn the table, UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath said that there could be more such alliances during elections in future.
Mr. Shoukath said he suspected a tacit understanding between the CPI(M) and the BJP in Nilambur. 'I suspect 100% the chances of an alliance between the CPI(M) and the BJP,' he said.
LDF candidate M. Swaraj rejected Mr. Govindan's revelation and asserted that the CPI(M) had never cooperated with the RSS. He said the Left had cooperated with the Janata Party, which comprised groups with different views, against the Congress in the wake of the Emergency.
Mr. Swaraj said that CPI(M) ideologue E.M.S. Namboodiripad had openly rejected the votes of the RSS. He alleged that it was the Congress which made an alliance with the Janata Party backed by the RSS.
Mr. Swaraj also alleged that the Congress had fielded RSS leaders such as O. Rajagopal and K.G. Marar as its candidates in the State.
CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam too rejected Mr. Govindan's revelation, saying that the Left had nothing to do with the RSS, which was the face of majority communalism.
According to Mr. Raman Pillai, the CPI(M) and RSS drifted away after 1977.
Meanwhile, the BJP said here that both the UDF and LDF were resorting to allegations about the RSS to divert attention from the key developmental issues in Nilambur.

CPI (Maoist) central committee member, 2 others gunned down
Representative Image VISHAKHAPATNAM/NEW DELHI: Senior Maoist leader Gajarla Ravi alias Uday, member of CPI(Maoist) central committee (CC), was killed by Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday in an encounter in Alluri Sitarama Raju district of the state. With his neutralisation, the total strength of the CC has shrunk to 13, including the four remaining politburo members, report Siva G & Bharti Jain. Two other senior Naxal leaders - state zonal committee member Ravi Venka Chaitanya alias Aruna and area committee member Anju - were also eliminated. Gajarla Ravi is the fifth CC member to be neutralised this year. Ravi was killed in an encounter between Maredumilli and Rampachodavaram areas in ASR district. Ravi and Aruna carried rewards of Rs 25 lakh and Rs 20 lakh respectively, and were accused of several killings in AP and Odisha.

"Is there democracy in India today?" Bengal CM condemns Samvidhan Hatya Diwas
Howrah (West Bengal) [India], June 18 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the idea of observing June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' and said that she objected to the name. She questioned if democracy prevailed in the country under the current government. Mamata Banerjee said, 'The Central government says that it will celebrate Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on completing 50 years of Emergency this year. I object to the statement 'Samvidhan Hatya'. The Constitution is the basis of our rights; it is the mother of democracy. How can they call it Samvidhan Hatya?' She further said that a letter was received at the Secretariat and said that, according to the letter, June 25 has to be observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. 'It is written that June 25 will be celebrated as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. The emergency did not kill any person. They could have celebrated Emergency Hatya Diwas also, but they are celebrating Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. I completely condemn this idea,' she said. She further said that a film will also be shown on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas and the Central government is asking more power to democracy. 'Is there democracy in India today? Can every day be Republic Hatya Diwas in a democratic system because every day they are killing the republic, every day they are curtailing the fundamental rights of the people, they are also destroying the economy of the state and all the fundamental rights of the state. Are you giving more power to democracy?' she said. 'They are killing democracy every day. They are damaging fundamental rights every day. They are altering the Constitution every day. They are forcing their own agenda on the people. They are Jumla Sarkar. They took the Indian Parliament away from us and built a new one. Wasn't it a heritage? They toppled the governments of Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand. They are even demanding President's Rule for Bengal. It doesn't suit you saying more power to democracy,' she hit out at the Centre. She went on to say that the EC is partial and worked for Centre. 'Those who do not respect the Constitution speak about constitutional morality. Maoist Ravi, sixth member of a family killed in gunfight with security forces
Representative Image HYDERABAD: Maoist central committee member Gajarla Ravi became Wednesday the sixth member of his extended family to be killed in a gunfight with security forces, marking the end of a generational association with insurgency that saw four of patriarch Gajarla Mallaiah's five sons go underground and two of them fall to bullets, reports U Sudhakarreddy. A senior intelligence official said 56-year-old Ravi, a native of Velishala in Telangana's Warangal district, was only seven when he started running errands for CPI (Maoist), including putting up propaganda posters in his village. He would go on to pick up the gun, barring a brief period when his brother Saraiah got him to enrol for a course at the Industrial Training Institute in Peddapalli. Ravi and his brothers - inherited their Maoist leanings from their father. Ravi's brother Saraiah was killed in a gunfight with anti-Maoist forces inside the Kanthanapally forest in Warangal in April 2008. His wife Padma, alias Radha, died in the same operation. Ravi's wife Nidigonda Prameela, alias Meena, was the divisional committee secretary till her death in an encounter at Andrapalli in 2018.
