Five held near Kolkata in Patna hospital murder case; prime accused escapes
However, the prime suspects, who were allegedly hiding in the city managed to flee, prompting police to launch a renewed search operation, a senior officer claimed.
The five arrested, who were apprehended from a housing complex in the satellite township of the metropolis following raids conducted jointly by the Bihar Police and the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) in the early hours of Saturday, were "providing logistics" to the five main accused who killed Mishra, an officer said.
According to CCTV camera footage, the prime suspects escaped the city in a white vehicle, which was spotted passing through Basanti Highway near here, the officer said.
The vehicle was later seen moving through the jurisdictions of three police stations - Anandapur, Kolkata Leather Complex, and Bhangar, he added.
Police have begun questioning the five arrested accused, who were living in two separate flats in the housing complex in New Town area, the officer said, adding that their mobile phones and other documents have been seized.
During Saturday's raid conducted around 5.38 am, one person was arrested from a place outside the housing complex, and after questioning him, four others were held from inside two flats, he said.
"These people supposedly helped the criminals in hiding and also in their transportation. We are checking their call lists, their WhatsApp messenger chats in connection with our probe into the matter," the officer said.
Mishra, a resident of Buxar district of Bihar, was shot dead by gunmen inside a private hospital in Patna on Thursday morning. He was a murder convict out on parole.
"Their mobile phone tower location helped us track them. Bihar Police will produce them before a local court, seeking transit remand," he said.
A purported CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed five armed men entering the ICU of the hospital and opening fire at Mishra.
Mishra was lodged at Beur Jail and had gone to the hospital for treatment on parole, police said, adding that he was involved in 24 criminal cases, including over 12 murder cases.
SP Patna (Central) Diksha had told PTI on Friday that a probe is underway as to how the criminals managed to reach the room where Mishra was admitted without any security check.
"This raises serious questions over the security arrangements at the hospital. Five unmasked armed assailants reached the second floor, opened fire at Mishra, and fled the premises. Investigators are certainly looking into any complicity that may have led to the security lapse," she had said.

HC upholds DU prof's removal after findings in assault case
New Delhi: Delhi High Court has upheld the removal of a Delhi University professor who challenged the adverse findings of an internal complaints committee (ICC) that found multiple allegations of sexual harassment against him. The ICC had also highlighted that virtual interactions between a teacher and students on messaging apps or social media sites fall within the definition of "workplace" under the POSH Act, 2013. "Teachers shape the careers of young aspiring students for a better future. The act of sexual harassment by these very teachers, who are considered as our guides and mentors, against young female students who have just attained majority, has a deleterious effect on the psyche of such students," Justice Subramanium Prasad noted in a recent order, dismissing the plea of Dr Amit Kumar, challenging his compulsory retirement by DU. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Kumar was with the department of political science at DU's Bharti College where multiple complaints were filed by students accusing him of sexual harassment. The court noted that all the complaints pertained to the sexual innuendoes/advances by Kumar in Facebook Messenger chats and WhatsApp chats sent by him to the complainants. "This court has perused the content of these messages and the transcript of the tele-conversation which were submitted by the complainants as evidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Egypt: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Given the obscene and profane nature of these messages, the same are not being reproduced," the court said. The complaints were made in Feb 2018, shortly after a video of students confronting the professor about his conduct became public and was circulated. It sparked student protests and demands for an inquiry, prompting the university to set up an ICC. While Kumar argued that there were several irregularities and he was not given a fair hearing by the ICC and DU authorities, the high court found no violation of rules in how the ICC was constituted or how the inquiry was conducted. "The complaint of violation of procedural provision should be examined from the point of view of prejudice, viz., whether such violation has prejudiced the delinquent officer/employee in defending himself properly and effectively," it said.

At UP STF headquarters in Lucknow, additional DG (law and order) Amitabh Yash on Monday said that the encounter took place around 11:55 pm on Sunday near the Badda Canal bridge in Simbhawali, Hapur. "He became a symbol of fear across Begusarai and was expanding his extortion and crime racket into Delhi and western UP. His neutralisation has not only avenged the killing of Vikas Kumar but will also help unravel his interstate criminal syndicate," said an STF officer. ‘Baron of Westarctica' opened cos in leading Indian businessmen's names?
1 2 Ghaziabad: A city court on Monday granted police five days' remand of Harshvardhan Jain, who ran a fake embassy from a Kavi Nagar bungalow that claimed to represent unrecognised 'micronations' like Westarctica, Ladonia and Seborga till he was arrested last week by UP's special task force (STF). The 49-year-old Harshvardhan Jain also drove around in cars with fake diplomatic blue number plates that had 'Honorary Consul Baron Westarctica' and 'Honorary Consigliere Principato Di Seborga' engraved on them. The STF believes the embassy, which was in operation for nine years, was a facade for a suspected hawala business that Jain ran using shell companies and had sought his custody to interrogate him. Jain was arrested by STF on July 23 from the rented two-storey Kavinagar bungalow. Talking to TOI, assistant prosecution officer Uttam Tripathy said had obtained a list of 25 companies from various diaries of Jain, which need to be verified. He cited the STF FIR to argue that Jain floated companies in the name of Dhirubhai Ambani, (Gautam) Adani and Mittal (which one was not specified), and the police recovered seals and stamps of those companies from him. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Undo "We wanted his remand to take him to Delhi and Gujarat to verify details of the companies," he said. STF recovered two passports and two PAN cards from Jain. Tripathy said one passport was Indian and the other issued by 'Samoga'. "When we contacted the protocol division of ministry of external affairs, we were told that no country by the name of Samoga exists," he said, adding both passports were signed by one Pushpa Ranjan. "We found that there is a genuine person by that name in the passport division of MEA. The Indian passport is genuine, so it calls for proper investigation as to how the seal and signature of the same person were found in a passport issued by a non-existent country," Tripathy said. As for the PAN cards, one was issued in the name of Harshvardhan Jain and the other in the name of HV Jain. Tripathy told the court that to verify how two applications were placed for the issuance of a PAN card by the same person, they needed to find out links that Jain used. Jain was a frequent flier to the UK and Dubai. He was known to controversial astrologer Chandraswami. Raj Kumar Mishra, SP of Noida STF, said there are many dots in the line to connect. "We are preparing a list of questions for Jain," he said. "STF has also found 22 bank accounts in the name of Jain, 12 of which are in India."
