A West Lothian grandmother turned her life around by losing almost four stone and is hoping to help others do the same.
Karen Robertson, from Livingston, spent years battling yo-yo dieting, unsustainable meal plans, and restrictions, reports the West Lothian Courier.
She is now stepping into a brand-new role as a Slimming World consultant and is hoping to inspire others.
The gran joined her local Slimming World group in Deans in July 2023 after 'trying everything'. The turning point came during a family holiday in Turkey.
She said: "I was always giving up the foods I loved, and nothing stuck. I was too embarrassed to play with my grandchildren.
"I made excuses, but deep down, I was ashamed. I felt like I was missing out on memories.
"Shortly after, I attended a family wedding and left feeling deeply unhappy. That day, I realised I couldn't keep living like this. I needed to make a change for good.
'From the moment I arrived at Slimming World, I felt so welcomed. There was no judgement – just support and encouragement.'
Living with coeliac disease, Karen was initially worried about following the plan. However she quickly discovered how flexible and gluten-free-friendly Slimming World really is.
She added: "I was amazed at how easily I could make it work for me without feeling restricted and enjoying my favourite meals like a burger and chips. It's been a game-changer.'
Karen is now bursting with energy months later and is fully embracing what life has to offer.

'I want others to feel the joy, freedom, and confidence that I've found. Whether you're gluten-free, stuck in a cycle of yo-yo dieting, or just feeling low – this plan works. And the best part? You never have to do it alone", she continued.
Karen is now opening her own Slimming World group on Monday, May 26, at 7pm, held at Polbeth Harwood Parish Church, Livingston.

Worcestershire health boss calls for support not shame on obesity
More than a third of adults are living with obesity in parts of Worcestershire and a county health chief has said they need more support instead of "fat-shaming".After figures from Sport England Active Lives were released, Dr Lisa McNally, the director of public health for the county, said: "The highest rates of obesity in Worcestershire are in Wyre Forest and Redditch at about a third."At the other end of the scale are Malvern Hills and Worcester at about a quarter."She said the county was going "in the right direction of less nagging and more provision of opportunities and choices". Worcestershire as a whole was similar to the national average. "I think fat-shaming in the country is a real issue and for young people it causes real problems with mental wellbeing," she said."We know through research that kids who are fat-shamed when they are young are more likely to develop problems with their weight, whether that be an eating disorder or obesity, as an adult." 'Stop wagging fingers' Practical support being offered by Worcestershire County Council includes free weight-loss programmes, funding for walking groups and Healthy Worcestershire sessions, she said."We've just invested in another 2,000 vouchers that enabled people to access Slimming World for free," she said."The way to do that is through GPs or other health professionals. We're getting about 70 referrals a month." Dr McNally said empowering and informing people was at the heart of Worcestershire's public health agenda."We have to stop wagging our fingers and moralising at people because they smoke or because they're overweight," she added, "and instead, work with the communities in which they live to give them more opportunities to improve their health."The Wyre Forest area covers Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn and Bewdley. 'I was a 20st secret eater then I was diagnosed with diabetes'
Mark Fettes used to hid his binge shopping on his credit card so his wife wouldn't know what he was doing but then he knew he had to change and lost more than 8st in less than a year A 20st tech expert says his secret snacking is in the past after a shock diagnosis which led him to lose more than eight stones in weight. Mark Fettes was getting "bigger and bigger" until he was told he had type 2 diabetes. Knowing he had to do something he joined Slimming World and lost the weight - and along with it put his diabetes into remission in less than eight months. Mark, from Lancashire, says: 'I'd been getting bigger and my health was really suffering. "As well as high blood pressure which I was on medication for, I was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which worried me. My wife Nikki and I would have takeaways two to four nights a week and most days working from home, I got into a habit of eating secretly. "I'd order a fast-food breakfast delivery or as soon as Nikki left for work, I'd nip to the local shop and buy five or six microwave burgers, a large bag of cheese balls and a two-litre bottle of cola. I'd even buy it with my credit card so Nikki wouldn't find out. 'Although I'd tried Slimming World in the past, I'd stopped going to group after three weeks and never really followed the plan. I realise now that by never staying for the group support, I wasn't learning anything about the plan, my relationship with food or how to change my habits. "My doctor suggested I try Slimming World on a 12-week referral programme. Then Nikki said she wanted to join a group, and while I'll admit I thought it would be a waste of time, I went along with her for support.' Slimming World on Referral is a partnership scheme with the NHS which provides people living with overweight or obesity with access to a 12-week weight loss plan from Slimming World. It's available in 72 areas across the UK. Mark joined his Fleetwood group in May last year weighing 20st 8lbs. He says: 'When we arrived at our local Slimming World group and met Sarah, our Consultant, my view soon changed. There was such an electric atmosphere and everything clicked. "There were lots of other guys there who were so supportive and I was blown away by everyone's journeys. I left feeling inspired and feeling that I could really make this work. "As soon as I found out all my favourite meals were still on the menu, so long as they were cooked in a healthy way, I knew this was a plan I could stick with. I lost 8lbs that first week." He said he was soon helping other people adding: "Knowing everyone was genuinely rooting for me was incredible. I genuinely wish the sessions were longer because I love it so much. 'As someone living with type 2 diabetes, I was given tailored resources – including a dedicated booklet created in partnership with Diabetes UK. It made it easy to adapt the Slimming World plan to my needs while staying in line with my healthcare team's advice. Knowing the support was backed by Diabetes UK gave me real confidence I was doing the right thing for my health. "My relationship with food has totally changed and I've fully embraced new habits so I know I'll be able to keep the weight off forever. We cook from scratch so much nowadays, with lots of lean meat and vegetables. As we both lead such busy lives, we love the convenience of the Slimming World Free Food range from Iceland, too. We've always got Slimming World chips in the freezer. 'I led a very sedentary lifestyle before, working from home and sitting down for eight hours. The most exercise I did was a walk at the weekend and some housework. My fitness was non-existent and I'd be lucky to manage 10 minutes walking on a treadmill.' He says that has now changed explaining: 'At the start, I couldn't even entertain the idea of any exercise. As I started losing weight though I began to move more by getting off my chair and walking around the house and going for regular brisk walks. After a month I realised I was enjoying fitness again – I used to work out in my 20's but had stopped. 'These days, I'm fitter than I've ever been – I'm a regular at the gym and even run there and back most days. My favourite way to start the day is a run along the seafront before work. "Before Slimming World, I was just an overweight guy going through the motions, not thinking much about my health or how I looked. Now, I feel like a completely new man. Being active and outdoors again isn't just good for my body – it's lifted my whole outlook on life. 'I used to struggle to find clothes that fit and would rely on basic supermarket 4 or 5XL t-shirts instead of things I really wanted to wear. Since I've lost weight, the impact on my everyday life has been incredible – I'm healthier, full of energy and I feel much more confident. 'Eight months after joining Slimming World, my health check revealed that my type 2 diabetes had gone into remission. My health has turned around completely – doctors used to be worried I'd have a heart attack, now I've come off my blood pressure medication and I've even stopped snoring and sleep much better.' Mark's experience backs up research published in the journal Archives of Diabetes & Obesity showing that people with type 2 diabetes can improve their diabetes management by making healthy lifestyle changes and losing weight following Slimming World's programme. The research revealed, of the members surveyed, 33.9% of those with type 2 diabetes reported their diabetes had gone into remission; this increased to 51% for those who'd lost at least 10% of their body weight; 61% were able to reduce or stop taking their diabetes medication and 81% saw improvements in their blood glucose (also known as blood sugar levels) management. Diabetes UK estimates that 1.3 million people are currently living with type 2 diabetes but are yet to be diagnosed. Douglas Twenefour, Head of Clinical at Diabetes UK, says: 'We are proud to be working with Slimming World, supporting members who are living with diabetes, or at risk of type 2 diabetes. By combining our expertise on weight loss, long-term healthy eating and diabetes, we are committed to helping people build healthier habits and live healthier lives.' Dr Sarah-Elizabeth Bennett, Senior Research Associate at Slimming World , says: 'The improvements Mark has made to his health are incredible and our research shows many members experience similar outcomes. Slimming World's partnership with Diabetes UK makes that support even stronger and enables us to further deepen our understanding of the challenges and misconceptions people living with diabetes face. 'Slimming World's flexible healthy eating plan can be easily tailored for members like Mark to fit their individual needs and to make sure it's in line with the dietary advice from their healthcare professional. It enables members to enjoy a wide variety of healthy everyday foods – like fresh fruit and veg, lean meat and poultry, fat free dairy, eggs, pasta, rice and grains.' Sarah Wells runs the Fleetwood Slimming World group and is Mark's Consultant. She says: 'To think it was a year ago that Mark joined my group – it's been incredible to see his progress. His success just goes to show how Slimming World makes a real difference in people's lives – we have the best package in group to help members lose weight, including techniques we share to help members understand themselves better, looking at those foods or situations that are stoppers for them and finding ways to protect their weight loss in the long term. "By changing his habits around food and activity in ways that worked for him, Mark was able to lose more than 8st and go on to put his type 2 diabetes into remission. I'm so very proud of him.' For more details about Slimming World or find your nearest group here. East Lothian man loses incredible five stone in 12 months after making one major change
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An East Lothian dad has revealed how he shed five stone in weight after struggling to run up the stairs without losing his breath. Munya Vengesa, from Musselburgh, used to run marathons but he admitted he let his fitness and health slip away as the years ticked on. Living with his wife and daughter, Chloe, 16, the 46-year-old shared how the scales hitting 107 kilos, led to him having a 'come to Jesus' moment, and he knew he had to change something drastically. The auditor fell into a rut as he became frustrated with not being able to shift weight but after a friend mentioned 'bpositive fitness solutions' run by Bob Baillie, Munya reached out to the personal trainer and coach, and was invited down to one of his classes. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sentstraight to your messages. 'I knew something wasn't right when getting upstairs was tough,' Munya said. 'I used to be able to run marathons and now stairs were leaving me out of breath. 'Personally I wasn't happy. It impacted my mental health and it is funny how the mental and physical go hand in hand impacting one another. 'I got in touch with Bob through a recommendation from a friend and headed along to one of his classes. I wanted to be healthier and have more energy whether it was at work or home and the first step was getting on top of my diet. 'Bob was great for that, alongside regular classes and his 8-week fitness programmes, the diet was a big revelation. He sent me recipe books that changed my perspective on food entirely. 'I had this misconception I'd have to eat bland food to lose weight but ironically I ended up eating a wider, more exciting, variety of meals. Things like Mongolian beef or Moroccan chicken were on the menu at home. 'My understanding around portion sizes, nutrition and healthier tasty substitutes changed completely. I swapped cokes for healthier fizzy drinks like Rubicons which shows you don't have to just drink water all the time.' Munya kept plugging away, attending Bob's classes and boot camps, to try to tackle his weight. He revelled in the environment, describing Bob's classes as more of a community club than your traditional group PT session. He described a place where everyone pushes each other and knows exactly when to put the arm over the shoulder if they saw a comrade struggling. He also added small changes such as going for a walk on his lunch breaks rather than sitting on his phone, which helped in making a positive change. 'I've lost 32 kilos (five stone) in just over a year,' Munya said. 'You can see from the before and after photos that my physical appearance is chalk and cheese. 'Everyone is so happy for me when they see the change. I find we can make 100 excuses for not starting our fitness journey but a quote has always stuck with me: one day or day one. 'The choice is yours. It is easy to keep saying I'll do it but when does day one start? That is not to say it is easy, you will have ups and downs when the scales don't move in the direction you want them to, but always try to revel in reaching your milestones and taking it one step at a time. 'Bob was massive for me. I would not be where I am today if it was not for him and what he has built. It has been a slog but I've had immense support. 'They often say it takes a village to raise a child and it has taken a village to get me here today. The people I've gone on this journey with have been amazing. 'I had to get a completely new wardrobe after losing the weight and I often joke you can look forward to the retail therapy after all that hard work. My advice to anyone looking to start out is just stay the course.' Bob, 47, was proud as punch when he recalled how Munya dedicated immense effort into turning his health around. The personal trainer, who has a gym unit in Prestonpans, started off his business in 2013. The former professional footballer has dedicated his life to helping others reach their fitness goals and he prides himself on the community his classes have built. 'Day one was a funny story with Munya,' Bob said. 'He text me and I told him to come along to the class but he showed up at 6am rather than 6pm. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox 'Bless his soul but he came back that night. He was shy at first but just kept coming back, asking questions, and learning. He's become a revelation in the fitness class and a ray of sunshine for everyone else. 'At this stage of his life he had to do something. He listened and hasn't looked back. My advice to anyone is you can do it, regardless of your age, size or where you are in life. 'There is no judgement, I help you find your feet and we go from there. If you commit to something, believe in yourself, then you can achieve anything. 'I love my job and people like Munya are why I do it.' You can learn more about 'bpositive fitness solutions' here.
