Rupali Ganguly Visits Court To Record Statement In Defamation Case Against Stepdaughter
Rupali Ganguly appeared in Andheri court to record her statement in a defamation case against her stepdaughter, Esha Verma, seeking Rs 50 crore in damages for false claims.
Television actress Rupali Ganguly appeared before a court in Andheri, Mumbai, this week to record her statement in a defamation case she has filed against her stepdaughter, Esha Verma. The case, filed in November 2024, alleges that Verma made a series of false and damaging claims against Ganguly, including remarks about her family and minor son. The Anupamaa star was accompanied by her lawyer, celebrity advocate Sana Raees Khan, who has been representing her in both civil and criminal proceedings related to the dispute.
Speaking to Instant Bollywood outside the court, Sana Raees Khan confirmed that both civil and criminal defamation actions are underway. 'Jaise ke aap sab log jaante ho High Court mein humne civil defamation suit file kiya hai, jaha pe hame interim relief mil chuki hai. Yaha pe criminal defamation complaint file hui thi, jaha par aaj Rupali bhi aayi thi," she said.
Khan added, 'Unhone court mein bayan diya aur unhone bataya ke kis tarah se unke saath jo traumatic experience hua hai, jis tarah se woh defame hui hai, unka reputation tarnish hua hai maliciously, woh sab unhone bataya court mein."
She further noted the severity of the allegations made against her client. 'Rupali ke against waise bahot saari defamatory baatein kahi gayi hai. Not just Rupali, even her son, unke son ko illegitimate kaha gaya hai. She is a bold woman; she has come out and legal action le rahi hai."
Details of the case
According to court filings, Ganguly's defamation suit was lodged on November 11, 2024, seeking Rs 50 crore in damages. The complaint alleges that Verma engaged in a deliberate campaign to harm the actress's reputation through social media posts, media interviews, and public statements.
The matter gained renewed attention after a 2020 social media post by Verma resurfaced online. In that post, Verma claimed Ganguly was romantically involved with her father, Ashwin K Verma, while he was still married to her mother. She also accused the actress of being 'controlling" and 'abusive" and alleged that Ganguly had issued death threats toward both her and her mother.
Verma is the daughter of Ashwin Verma and his ex-wife, Sapna Verma, who divorced in 2008. Ashwin later married Ganguly in 2013, and the couple welcomed their son, Rudransh, the same year.
Khan's legal team issued an official statement outlining why Ganguly chose to take the matter to court. 'We have issued a defamation notice to her stepdaughter in response to her false and damaging statements as Rupali Ganguly firmly stands against the use of defamatory tactics for publicity and she has taken this legal step to protect her reputation from unfounded claims. These baseless allegations were clearly intended to harm Rupali Ganguly's reputation and capitalise on her public standing. Such actions have not only caused emotional distress but have also unfairly tarnished her personal and professional integrity," the statement read.
The filing also cites remarks made by Verma about Rudransh, Ganguly's 11-year-old son, as a major factor behind the decision to pursue legal action.

Coolie mania: Rs 4,500 for first show, fans cross states to watch early screening
The 'Coolie' craze has hit an all-time high with tickets being sold for as high as Rs 4,500! Be it the advance booking or the urge to catch the first-day first-show (FDFS) of the Rajinikanth-starrer in theatres, 'Coolie' is witnessing an unprecedented advance booking not just in Tamil Nadu, but across the country and the international market. However, a section of genuine fans are shocked at the exorbitant prices being quoted for the FDFS shows across South to sources, on the condition of anonymity, a popular theatre in Chennai has priced the tickets at a whopping Rs 4,500. In Pollachi, a theatre staff member was caught on camera selling the first-day first-show tickets for Rs 400. While this is against Tamil Nadu government rules, many theatres (especially single screens) and fan clubs are exploiting the situation to sell the tickets in black for unreasonable prices. Prabakar, an ardent fan of Rajinikanth, who wanted to buy tickets for the first show, told India Today Digital, "I have tried my luck at all the popular theatres in Chennai. They are all priced at Rs 600, Rs 1,000, with the highest being Rs 4,500. I am not able to book tickets through the ticketing apps for the first show, as they are either blocked or sold out. Fans like me have no other choice but to buy the tickets in black or wait till the first shows are over to watch the film by paying government-authorised rates." For fans who have lived in Tamil Nadu or any state in the South, this might not come as a shock. But, for those who are unaware of the craze for a Rajinikanth film, this is the norm in the state that houses him. Not just Tamil Nadu, the ticket rates have soared high even for dubbed versions of 'Coolie'. 'Coolie' is releasing in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in Tamil and Telugu. Fans are patiently waiting for the government orders for the film, so they can plan the celebrations accordingly. The two states allow early morning shows, with increased ticket an IT employee and a Chennai resident, said, "It's a working day, and we are a bunch of Rajinikanth fans who catch the FDFS no matter what. We're planning to drive to Nagari in Andhra Pradesh, as it is just a few hours away from Chennai to watch the show and celebrate Thalaivar. We could drive down and go to the office as well. We're just waiting for the booking to open."advertisementBefore 2023, the Tamil Nadu government allowed selected theatres across the state to hold early morning shows (1 am, 4 am and 5 am). However, in 2023, during the 'Thunivu' vs 'Varisu' clash, a fan died outside Rohini theatre in Chennai during the celebrations. Thereafter, the TN government denied permission for the early morning shows. Hence, fans have resorted to travelling to the neighbouring states to watch the morning shows are usually preceded by celebrations where fans will burst crackers, dance till they drop and celebrate the arrival of their favourite star's film. Not just outside the theatres, it is a celebration inside the theatres too. Theatres turn into concert halls with enthusiastic fans dancing and enjoying the occasion together. Fans throw confetti in the air, scream and cheer for their favourite actors. Every release, especially for actors Rajinikanth, Vijay, Ajith Kumar and Kamal Haasan, is a carnival in planning in-house celebrations to travelling to another state to watch the early shows, fans leave no stone unturned to hype up the actors, who enjoy a demi-God status among them. For 'Coolie', which has an ensemble cast representing each film industry, the craze seems to be skyrocketing with each passing and Karnataka will host 6 am shows for 'Coolie' and the pre-sales have hit the roof. With fans running and pushing each other to secure tickets, the 'Coolie' mania is taking over the audience. While Mumbai has 5 am shows, Tamil Nadu shows will begin only at 9 single screens, tickets are being sold for as high as Rs 2,000 in Bengaluru. Tickets in Bengaluru are priced at Rs 500 in multiplexes, while 'Coolie' ticket prices range between Rs 250 to Rs 500 in Mumbai theatres. At the time of publishing this story, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana theatres hadn't opened the booking as they were awaiting government orders. Looking at the obsession with watching the first-day first-show of 'Coolie', the Rajinikanth-starrer is likely to cross Rs 150 crore on Day 1, according to trade experts. If there was one man, at 74, who is capable of sending fans into a frenzy with every release of his, it is the one and only Rajinikanth - The Superstar of Indian cinema. Thalaivar for a reason!- EndsMust Watch

The accused were booked following allegations that surfaced from a phone call made by the person shortly before his death, during which he told a friend that the accused were threatening and harassing him, driving him to take the extreme Tapan Thatte and Vivek Arote had approached the Bombay High Court seeking to revoke the FIR, arguing that even after two years, the police had not investigated the alleged motive behind the harassment. However, the High Court rejected the plea on June 10, noting that the police had filed a chargesheet on March 24, 2025, before the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Malshiras, and held that the petition had become infructuous. The High Court observed that the petitioner had an "equally efficacious alternative remedy" under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) or the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) by filing an application for discharge before the trial court further held, "Filing of an application for discharge before the trial court is not an onerous remedy... The petitioner cannot invoke Article 226 of the Constitution to seek adjudication of innocence."Challenging this decision, the petitioners moved the Supreme Court, which on August 8 issued a notice returnable in five weeks and directed that "in the meantime, execution and operation of the impugned judgment... passed by the High Court of Judicature at Bombay shall remain stayed."- EndsTune InMust Watch
