With Her Debut Album, JADE Says ‘There's Nothing Holding Me Back' From Spilling Truth

Yahoo2 days ago
Prior to this year's festival season, JADE had already performed on massive stages for countless fans — but never by herself. As such, appearances at 2025 U.K. festivals like Glastonbury, Mighty Hoopla and Radio 1's Big Weekend required plenty of prep work.
'When I first started rehearsing, I was like, 'Oh, s–t. I actually have to sing the whole of every song,' ' says the 32-year-old pop star, who spent over a decade in the best-selling girl group Little Mix. 'I had to train my body and breath work. And then there was my internal challenge, since I'm my own biggest critic. I was like, 'What do I need to do to show everyone that I am great on my own?' '

JADE's debut solo album, That's Showbiz Baby!, answers that question: Due out Sept. 12 on Sony Music U.K./RCA Records, the 14-song project demonstrates the breadth of Jade Thirlwall's taste as a pop student and skills as a wide-ranging vocal dynamo.
Last year, JADE made her dramatic solo debut with 'Angel of My Dreams,' a complex synth-pop firecracker that earned critical raves and became a top 10 hit in the United Kingdom. The single hinted at her complicated relationship with the music industry, after Little Mix won The X Factor in 2011 and then relentlessly recorded albums and toured before going on a hiatus in 2022. In January, promotional single 'IT girl' — which included lyrics like 'Sign on the line for me/Baby, smile, but don't show your teeth/Say goodbye to autonomy' — made those feelings about the group's micromanaged run explicit.
'We all know what it's about,' JADE says of 'IT girl,' which she regrets not making a proper single. 'It's got a certain cheekiness — I'm a laugh-at-my-trauma kind of girl, and I really enjoy writing music that ruffles people's feathers because that's what art should do. Those are my experiences, and now that I'm on my own, there's nothing holding me back from telling that truth.'
JADE started thinking about the tone of her debut while Little Mix was wrapping up its run and signed solo deals with Full Stop Management and RCA in early 2022. She felt an urge to continue the group's momentum and immediately return to the spotlight, but found that all her early solo material sounded like Little Mix songs. 'Part of me was conditioned to be on this hamster wheel with the group,' she says. 'It was essential that I took a good two, three years to figure out who I am.'
During that time, JADE linked up with producers like Cirkut, Lostboy and Mike Sabath, translating 'the art of compromising and teamwork' that she learned with Little Mix into studio sessions with multiple points of view. To establish her own, she drew inspiration from the styles she loved growing up, pre-X Factor: Motown, Clubland, musical theater. She also pulled from Madonna and Janet Jackson, pop icons with a knack for reinvention, as well as Gwen Stefani and Girls Aloud's Nicola Roberts — former group members who fashioned bold sounds on their own.
As a result, That's Showbiz Baby! balances bugged-out pop experiments like 'Angel of My Dreams' and 'IT girl,' thumping dancefloor fare like 'Fantasy' and 'FUFN (F–k You for Now)' and glimpses of JADE's personality that she never had the opportunity to showcase within a group setting. 'Glitch' pushes JADE toward futuristic R&B while exploring her own insecurities, while 'Unconditional' is a clear highlight that illustrates the album's ambition. Blending disco shimmer with aggressive guitar, JADE describes 'Unconditional' as 'Donna Summer meets MGMT' and is dedicated to her mother, who has battled health issues as her daughter has become a pop star.
Following a few more festival appearances in August, JADE will embark on her first headlining tour in October, presenting That's Showbiz Baby! across Ireland and the United Kingdom. She says the goal of her live show is to present herself as more than 'Jade from Little Mix' and that the reactions from her recent festival crowds have been beyond encouraging. 'I've loved being onstage again and performing songs that I've written from my personal experiences,' she says. 'The live shows in particular have shown me that I really can do this on my own and enjoy it.'
In that regard, That's Showbiz Baby! is just the first step in a long-term plan: JADE already has song concepts for her second album and visual ideas for upcoming eras. Like Little Mix, her core fan base is in the United Kingdom, but she wants to expand outward and become a major force in other territories. After more than a decade of tireless work within a girl group, JADE understands she must prioritize originality and authenticity as a solo artist — but also knows she possesses the fortitude to achieve her goals.
'I live and breathe pop music,' she says. 'I can't imagine doing anything else.'

‘The Beatles Anthology' Expands With a 9th Episode and 4th Volume

The Beatles are back: Unreleased demos and never before seen footage are coming later this fall. The fourth volume of the band's 'Anthology Collection' of recordings (including 13 new demos) is arriving, along with a capstone episode to the 1995 eight-part documentary and a 25th-anniversary edition of 'The Beatles Anthology' book. The album, 'Anthology 4,' includes new mixes of 'Free as a Bird' and 'Real Love.' The release will accompany remastered versions of the first three 'Anthology' albums as well, and will be available Nov. 21. In the documentary series, fans followed the Fab Four — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — from childhood through the 1960s, as they rose to fame before their breakup in 1970. Now, 30 years later, the ninth episode will stream on Disney+ beginning Nov. 26. It features footage of Paul, George and Ringo from 1994 and 1995 as they were creating the 'Anthology' film. Earlier this year, the Beatles won a Grammy for 'Now and Then,' which was billed as their last song. Using advanced audio technology, John's voice was isolated from a demo he recorded not long before he was killed outside the Dakota in Manhattan in 1980, and blended with the others to make 'Now and Then.' The unreleased music and new episode will also be accompanied by a 25th-anniversary edition of 'The Beatles Anthology' book, which features interviews with all four members and close collaborators, including the former producer George Martin, the road manager Neil Aspinall and the Beatles' spokesman, Derek Taylor. The illustrated book will be published on Oct. 14, ahead of the album and film. Martin curated the original three volumes of the music anthology. His son Giles Martin is responsible for remastering the work, after his father's death in 2016. He also curated the fourth volume.

Ariana Grande's Current Hits Span The Many Chapters Of Her Career

It's a big week of comebacks for Ariana Grande in the United Kingdom. The pop superstar sees her most recent album return, and several singles find their way back to one list. Her reappearing favorites seem to have nothing to do with one another, other than the fact that they are connected by Grande's talent and the support of her massive fanbase. 'Santa Tell Me' and 'Defying Gravity' Return Together A pair of Grande classics find their way to the Official Physical Singles chart, which tallies the bestselling tunes available on CD, cassette, or vinyl in the U.K. Her holiday smash 'Santa Tell Me' is the higher-rising of the two, as it breaks back in at No. 71. 'Defying Gravity,' the biggest hit from the musical Wicked, which also credits her co-star Cynthia Erivo, reenters at No. 87. Both Hits Peaked at No. 3 Coincidentally, both 'Santa Tell Me' and 'Defying Gravity' peaked at No. 3 on the Official Physical Singles chart. The Wicked tune passes two months on the roster as of this frame, while 'Santa Tell Me,' an annual smash, is now up to 14 stays on the ranking. 'Twilight Zone" Also Appears as it Falls Grande fills a trio of spaces on the Official Physical Singles chart, as 'Twilight Zone,' her most recent focus track, dips from No. 13 to No. 27. The same cut also holds on inside the top 40 on the Official Vinyl Singles roster, falling from No. 12 to No. 34. Eternal Sunshine Becomes a Bestseller Again The superstar also returns to a pair of albums lists with the same title. Eternal Sunshine, her 2024 full-length, is the bestseller once more as it resettles at No. 90 on the Official Physical Albums chart and No. 96 on the Official Album Sales tally, after not appearing on either roster last period. The Grammy-nominated Eternal Sunshine can also be found on the Official Albums Streaming and Official Albums charts. But just like 'Twilight Zone,' which helped resuscitate Eternal Sunshine as part of a deluxe reissue titled Brighter Days Ahead, the full-length doesn't need to reappear on either of those latter lists. Instead, it dips a few spaces to Nos. 75 and 76, respectively.

Selena Gomez Charts A New No. 1 Hit In America

It's been less than half a year since Selena Gomez released her latest album I Said I Love You First, a collaborative project with her fiancé Benny Blanco, who has enjoyed great commercial success as a producer and songwriter. The alternative and acoustic pop project did not turn out to be as huge as many of her past sets, and the title only lived on the Billboard charts for a handful of frames before disappearing entirely. The album may be gone, but one of its songs has enjoyed a surprisingly lengthy life on a handful of tallies in the United States. Months after I Said I Love You First underwhelmed, Gomez, Blanco, and one of their collaborators score a new champion. 'Ojos Tristes' Jumps to No. 1 Gomez rises to No. 1 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart. Her single 'Ojos Tristes,' which also credits Blanco and the band The Marías, lifts from No. 2 to the top spot 17 weeks into its time on the radio roster. Selena Gomez Earns Her Third No. 1 'Ojos Tristes' marks Gomez's third No. 1 on the Latin Pop Airplay list. While Gomez is primarily known for her English-language, top 40-leaning pop sound, she has scored several wins in the Latin space before. She first led the charge back in 2018 with 'Taki Taki,' which was produced by DJ Snake and also featured Ozuna and Cardi B. Three years later, she joined Rauw Alejandro on the track 'Baila Conmigo.' 'Ojos Tristes' earned both Blanco and The Marías their inaugural leader on the Latin Pop Airplay list. Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's Several Radio Hits Gomez and Blanco have reached Latin Pop Airplay together previously, as several years ago they collaborated on Blanco's tune 'I Can't Get Enough.' That cut, which also featured Tainy and J Balvin, worked its way to No. 14 back in 2019, though it did spend one more frame on the list when compared to 'Ojos Tristes,' at least so far. Gomez has earned 15 career appearances on the Latin Pop Airplay list, including with several of her general pop favorites such as 'Come & Get It,' 'Same Old Love,' 'The Heart Wants What It Wants,' and 'We Don't Talk Anymore' alongside Charlie Puth. 'Ojos Tristes' Leads Multiple Billboard Charts 'Ojos Tristes' remains the big hit on several of Billboard's Latin rankings months into its tenure. As it climbs to No. 1 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart, the single reaches a new high on the Latin Airplay list, ascending from No. 6 to No. 3. The tune once again leads the Hot Latin Pop Songs roster and improves to No. 18 on the general consumption Hot Latin Songs list.
