Brush Fire Near Popular California Lake Prompts Evacuations
The Inn fire ignited on Thursday afternoon and had burned more than 500 acres near Mono Lake, Calif., in Inyo National Forest by late Friday morning, according to Cal Fire, the state's fire fighting agency.
Mono City, an unincorporated community of roughly 200 people northwest of the lake, was under evacuation on Friday afternoon. The Mono Inn restaurant and Tioga Lodge hotel, two popular establishments, had also been evacuated, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Office. The restaurant and the hotel sit just off Highway 395, the major artery in the region that was expected to remain closed through Friday afternoon, officials said.
Highway 395 was closed mainly because of safety reasons, Lisa Cox, a spokeswoman for Inyo National Forest, told the local news organization Sierra Wave Media on Friday. 'Power lines have burned, power lines are down across the highway,' she said. 'We have to helicopter power line poles in.'
The fire was spreading slowly through a landscape of mostly sagebrush in a northern direction toward Mono City. Chloe Castillo, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire, said firefighting efforts were focused on containing the fire's north end. 'It's creeping and smoldering in that area,' she said.
Helicopters were pulling water from Mono Lake and Lundy Lake on Thursday and Friday and dropping it on the flames, Ms. Cox said. Air tankers have also been assisting and releasing flame retardant, but not over Mono Lake and Mill Creek.
'This fire has the potential to get larger and it has the potential to move, so we're trying to make as much progress as quickly as we can today,' Ms. Cox said on Friday.
Mono Lake is a popular tourist destination and had been expecting an influx of visitors for Memorial Day weekend. The Inn fire is one of several brush fires that have erupted in California in the last week as the weather has begun to warm.
Bodie State Historic Park, a gold-mining ghost town about 20 miles northeast of Mono City, is another popular draw to the area. It remained open on Friday.
'We definitely are getting smoke impacts,' said Matthew Maloney, a senior park aide. 'It's very hazy today and you can definitely smell the smoke today.'
Mr. Maloney says Memorial Day weekend has been one of the busiest times of the year for the park.
The fire broke out Thursday afternoon not far from the highway, just south of Mono City, amid dry, blustery weather. Winds up to 35 miles per hour pushed wildfire flames.
'It's not as gusty today,' said Mark Deutschendorf, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Reno, Nev. 'Looks like one site near the fire is gusting to 17 miles per hour.'
Light winds are expected to continue overnight and into Saturday morning with winds of 20 m.p.h. or less. Potential thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon could bring erratic winds.

Free entry available at America's national parks on Aug. 4
Pick a park. Any national park. They'll all be free to enter on Monday, Aug. 4, one of the last fee-free dates this year. And it's not just national parks like Acadia and Yosemite, but every site within the National Park System that typically requires entrance passes, including Cape Code National Seashore and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Here's what park lovers should know. What days can you get into national parks for free? There are three fee-free dates left this year: Aug. 4 – Great American Outdoors Act signing day Sept. 27 – National Public Lands Day Nov. 11 – Veterans Day Why are parks free on August 4? Aug. 4 is the fifth anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act. The legislation funds critical infrastructure improvements across parks. 'Over 600 projects, ranging from replacing a split-rail fence at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park to rehabilitating a campground at Zion National Park, have been taking place in more than 250 national parks,' the National Park Service shared on Facebook. Why aren't national parks free all the time? Some parks are free to enter year-round. Only a fraction of the 433 sites within the Park System charge entrance fees, which go toward supporting the parks themselves. 'At least 80 percent of funding from recreation fees stays in the park where it is collected, and the other 20 percent is used to benefit parks that do not collect fees or parks which generate only a small amount of revenue,' according to the National Park Service's website. Travelers can search the NPS site for entry fees by park. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: National parks waive entrance fees on Aug. 4

Man Takes Teenage Son on 3-Day Vacation to Bond, but Wife Says They're ‘Excluding' Her
The man only sees his 13-year-old son from a previous marriage on the weekendsNEED TO KNOW A man shared that he planned a "quick trip" to San Diego with his teenage son from a previous marriage His wife of six years claimed that he is "excluding her" and their 2-year-old son He turned to Reddit to ask if he was in the wrongA man found himself at odds with his wife after planning a trip with his 13-year-old son. The father shared on Reddit's "AITAH" forum that he planned a "quick trip" to San Diego with his teenage son from a previous marriage, which ended around eight years ago. The poster and his ex-wife had 50/50 custody of their son for the first year. For four years after, he had his son from Monday to Friday. However, he then became the "weekend parent" due to several reasons, such as his busy work schedule and the better school districts near his ex-wife's house. The man now shares a toddler with his wife of six years. The two recently went on two solo trips together; otherwise, he said, "We had not a single night alone together for 20 months." Wanting to spend quality time with his teenage son, the father planned a three-day vacation for the two of them to go to San Diego. "When I asked him in the beginning of the summer break what he wanted to do he listed off one thing, go to the beach," the dad explained. However, he landed himself in a sticky situation when his wife reacted poorly to the plans. The man explained that he left his wife out of the planning because she is a flight attendant and "travels almost every weekend." "This means my weekends with my 13 year old are alone with his baby brother, making it challenging for us to have any quality time together just he and I," he explains. "This means my son has gone from having his dad every night, to 50/50, to weekends, and then to weekends shared with a baby." "This has riddled me with guilt and I wanted so time just he and I to reinforce our bond," he added of his intentions with the father-son trip. Despite explaining himself, the man's wife has told him that "she is hurt" by his plans. "She feels her and our new son are being excluded and that it is dividing the family," he adds. The father sympathized with her feelings, but hopes that his teenage son's "perception of the situation would override that." "In a couple years when our youngest is older, this would 100% be a family trip," he explains. "We all know how disruptive a small child can be when doing anything and my 13 year old has that every single weekend. I wanted him to have this trip without that." The man noted that he and his wife have a road trip planned for later this year, emphasizing that the trip to California "is not in lieu of any activities with her." Regardless, he says his wife is now "ghosting" him and his son over their trip. After the father asked if he was in the wrong, the comments section was quick to side with him in the conflict. "Your wife gets you all the time. Your 13 yo has very limited time with you, and it's shared time. Your son having one trip alone with his dad won't hurt her," one person wrote. The commenter added that the wife "sounds jealous and immature." Another person expressed concern for the son, asking, "Is she always this resentful of your son? Check in with him and make sure she hasn't been unkind to him." A third commenter pointed out that he "doesn't have that much time left" with his teenage son. "Soon there will be high school, part-time jobs and activities that are not hanging with parents. You should take your older son on the trip! Your wife needs to understand how important this is," they wrote. Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword
