Man Takes Teenage Son on 3-Day Vacation to Bond, but Wife Says They're ‘Excluding' Her

Yahoo5 days ago
The man only sees his 13-year-old son from a previous marriage on the weekendsNEED TO KNOW
A man shared that he planned a "quick trip" to San Diego with his teenage son from a previous marriage
His wife of six years claimed that he is "excluding her" and their 2-year-old son
He turned to Reddit to ask if he was in the wrongA man found himself at odds with his wife after planning a trip with his 13-year-old son.
The father shared on Reddit's "AITAH" forum that he planned a "quick trip" to San Diego with his teenage son from a previous marriage, which ended around eight years ago.
The poster and his ex-wife had 50/50 custody of their son for the first year. For four years after, he had his son from Monday to Friday. However, he then became the "weekend parent" due to several reasons, such as his busy work schedule and the better school districts near his ex-wife's house.
The man now shares a toddler with his wife of six years. The two recently went on two solo trips together; otherwise, he said, "We had not a single night alone together for 20 months."
Wanting to spend quality time with his teenage son, the father planned a three-day vacation for the two of them to go to San Diego.
"When I asked him in the beginning of the summer break what he wanted to do he listed off one thing, go to the beach," the dad explained.
However, he landed himself in a sticky situation when his wife reacted poorly to the plans.
The man explained that he left his wife out of the planning because she is a flight attendant and "travels almost every weekend."
"This means my weekends with my 13 year old are alone with his baby brother, making it challenging for us to have any quality time together just he and I," he explains. "This means my son has gone from having his dad every night, to 50/50, to weekends, and then to weekends shared with a baby."
"This has riddled me with guilt and I wanted so time just he and I to reinforce our bond," he added of his intentions with the father-son trip.
Despite explaining himself, the man's wife has told him that "she is hurt" by his plans.
"She feels her and our new son are being excluded and that it is dividing the family," he adds.
The father sympathized with her feelings, but hopes that his teenage son's "perception of the situation would override that."
"In a couple years when our youngest is older, this would 100% be a family trip," he explains. "We all know how disruptive a small child can be when doing anything and my 13 year old has that every single weekend. I wanted him to have this trip without that."
The man noted that he and his wife have a road trip planned for later this year, emphasizing that the trip to California "is not in lieu of any activities with her."
Regardless, he says his wife is now "ghosting" him and his son over their trip.

After the father asked if he was in the wrong, the comments section was quick to side with him in the conflict. "Your wife gets you all the time. Your 13 yo has very limited time with you, and it's shared time. Your son having one trip alone with his dad won't hurt her," one person wrote.
The commenter added that the wife "sounds jealous and immature."

Another person expressed concern for the son, asking, "Is she always this resentful of your son? Check in with him and make sure she hasn't been unkind to him."
A third commenter pointed out that he "doesn't have that much time left" with his teenage son. "Soon there will be high school, part-time jobs and activities that are not hanging with parents. You should take your older son on the trip! Your wife needs to understand how important this is," they wrote.

Best college football stadiums rankings by Yelp, Tripadvisor, Google reviews

Oklahoma State has been playing college football in what is now called Boone Pickens Stadium for more than 100 years. It's the oldest home field in the Big 12. But the money infused by the Cowboys' biggest booster and stadium namesake (before he died in 2019) transformed the place into a state-of-the-art facility over the past 20 years ‒ and to rave reviews. The feedback is in at this point and the changes have been a big hit. Boone Pickens Stadium had the best reviews of any college football venue in the country ahead of the 2025 season as judged by the ratings systems at Yelp, Tripadvisor and Google. It had a 4.8 (out of 5) star rating based on more than 1,700 combined entries on the three services. Famous fields like Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium and LSU's Tiger Stadium from the SEC, The Big House at Michigan and Clemson's Memorial Stadium were also among the familiar favorites that landed in the top 25 based on the reviews by users. But the list was slightly different than traditional surveys of the country's best college football stadiums, with a few notable snubs that just missed the list. Boone Pickens Stadium, for instance, slotted in at No. 25 in USA TODAY's recent ranking of college football stadiums. The Big 12 actually had the two best-reviewed stadiums among the 136 Football Bowl Subdivision schools based on the average combined ratings doled out on Google, Yelp and Tripadvisor over the years. Kansas State's Bill Snyder Family Stadium had the second-best combined rating in the country. The SEC did lead the way with four of the top 10 best-reviewed stadiums and six of the top 25 best stadiums in college football, according to Google, Yelp and Tripadvisor. The Big 12 followed closely with five stadiums on the list, while the Big Ten had four. There were also seven Group of Six conference schools with stadiums that made the top 25 based on ratings and reviews, with Hancock Whitney Stadium, where Sun Belt Conference member South Alabama plays its home games, finishing among the top five overall. For American Express GBT, a double dose of good news

Paul Abbott, the CEO of American Express Global Business Travel, said the company hit a "key milestone" when the U.S. Department of Justice on July 29 dropped its lawsuit that sought to block the acquisition of CWT. "We look forward to creating even more value for customers, suppliers and shareholders," Abbott said during Amex GBT's second-quarter earnings call Aug. 5. The $540 million acquisition was announced in March 2024 (the transaction was originally set at $570 million but was reduced this past March). In January, the Biden administration's DOJ filed a lawsuit to block the transaction, on the grounds that it would stifle competition among the largest travel management companies that serve global and multinational clients. But with the dismissal of the lawsuit on July 29, the path has been cleared for the acquisition, which is expected to close in the third quarter. It will marry two of the largest TMCs in the country. Amex GBT sits at No. 3 on Travel Weekly's Power List, with 2024 sales of $30.48 billion; only online travel giants Booking Holdings and Expedia Group are bigger. CWT is No. 6 on the Power List with $15.2 billion in 2024 sales. Two other global TMCs sit between them: BCD Travel and Flight Centre Travel Group. Just behind CWT is Chase Travel Group. During its earnings call, Abbot said Amex GBT's "experienced team is ready for the integration, and we are confident in the growth opportunity of the combined company." Abbott also called the deal a "compelling financial transaction" with around $155 million in net synergies. Amex GBT has successfully integrated large acquisitions and hit synergy targets before, he added. It has acquired a number of major Power List agencies in recent years, including Hogg Robinson Group in 2018 and Egencia (then the corporate-travel arm of Expedia Group) and Ovation Travel Group in 2021. Amex GBT exceeds Q2 expectations While some data indicate a potential downturn coming in corporate travel, Amex GBT appears to be bucking the trend with a solid quarter. The Global Business Travel Association in late July released data indicating corporate travel stakeholders were anticipating a slowdown. Among those surveyed, including corporate travel managers, suppliers and TMCs, optimism decreased from 67% in November 2024 to 28% by mid-June. Respondents cited two main long-term concerns: higher travel costs and increased administrative burdens. U.S. government actions, like tariffs and entry restrictions, were also noted as impactful to business travel. However, Amex GBT's financial results in the second quarter were better than expected, and the TMC raised its expectations of total revenue and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) for the full year. Abbott said macroeconomic uncertainty impacted the TMC in April. But, he said the impact "was temporary, and our transaction growth inflected back into positive territory, up 2%, in May and June combined." "We continue to see green shoots into July that give us confidence that the demand environment has improved." Certain segments of clients performed better than others, Abbott said. For instance, those in IT, pharmaceuticals, business, professional and financial services saw growth in May and June. However, those that were more affected by tariffs, like mining, oil, consumer goods and retail, "continued to see slower demand." The most impacted was the automotive industry, but its transaction growth improved in May and June. Abbott said in a recent survey of GBT's top 100 customers, data pointed to a moderation of macroeconomic uncertainty. Customers are "seemingly less concerned or increasingly neutral on the impact of tariffs," he said. "We have seen little by way of tangible customer actions taken in terms of travel policy restrictions." Amex GBT recorded a 1% revenue increase in Q2, to $631 million. Adjusted EBITDA was up 4%, to $133 million. Abbott said GBT hit a milestone with more than $500 million in adjusted EBITDA for the last 12 months. Net income of $15 million was down 48%, mainly due to higher operating expenses, unfavorable foreign-exchange impacts and higher income taxes.
