KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul today received a courtesy visit from the First Vice-President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, Kittisethabindit Cheam Yeap, at Parliament House here.
The five-member delegation from Cambodia arrived at the building at 2.30 pm and subsequently held talks with Johari lasting approximately 40 minutes.
According to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat), the visit reflects the commitment of both countries to strengthen bilateral relations through inter-parliamentary diplomacy, in line with the goal of enhancing regional cooperation under the framework of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).
'During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on efforts to expand cooperation in the fields of economy, tourism and technology.
'This is particularly in promoting bilateral investment, empowering cultural and heritage tourism, and exploring the potential of a sustainable digital economy in the post-pandemic era,' the office said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Johari, who is also President of AIPA, was quoted in the statement as reaffirming the Malaysian Parliament's commitment to strengthening the role of the legislative institution in supporting development policies that are competitive, inclusive and future-oriented.
'He also expressed appreciation for the active involvement of the Cambodian Parliament in regional platforms such as AIPA, ahead of the ASEAN-AIPA Leaders' Interface scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on May 26, 2025.
'This meeting further strengthens the belief that close relations between parliamentary institutions can open up broader and more meaningful cooperation, thereby making ASEAN a dynamic, stable and people-centred regional bloc,' the statement said.

Thailand urges bilateral resolution over Cambodia border clash
BANGKOK: The Thai government issued a second statement on Thursday (June 5) regarding the Cambodia border situation, emphasising the use of existing bilateral mechanisms to address the issue. The statement, published on the Royal Thai Government website, follows the clash between Thai and Cambodian troops that took place in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani on May 28. According to the statement, the two sides have discussed and agreed to use existing bilateral mechanisms to resolve the issue, namely the Joint Border Commission (JBC), the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC), and the Regional Border Committee (RBC), based on the good relations between Thailand and Cambodia. This was the result of discussions between the Army commanders of the two sides on May 29, 2025. Cambodia has stated its intention to involve the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand has not recognised compulsory jurisdiction of the ICJ since 1960. Thailand and Cambodia already have existing bilateral mechanisms to address these issues, which has been the agreement from the beginning. - Photo: The Nation/ANN The most important issue at hand is that both sides must focus solely on addressing and resolving the said incident, and avoid expanding it further as it will add unnecessary complexity. Thailand does not want to see either party suffer losses, particularly as Thailand and Cambodia are already engaged in existing boundary mechanisms, especially the JBC, which in the past 26 years has produced significant progress in many areas, such as the case of the Thailand-Cambodia Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian-Stung Bot) and the construction of the New Border Bridge at National Border Checkpoint Ban Pak Kard, Chanthaburi province. Thailand stands ready to resume the JBC process on June 14, 2025, and hopes Cambodia will demonstrate a corresponding willingness to engage in a manner that reflects our shared commitment to peace, stability and mutual respect. - The Nation/ANN

Paetongtarn: Thailand rejects ICJ authority, urges issue containment
BANGKOK: Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra reaffirmed Thailand's rejection of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) authority, stressing the need for bilateral mechanisms with Cambodia. According to her Facebook post on Thursday (June 5), Paetongtarn stated that in response to the Cambodian government's statement on the Thai-Cambodian border situation, she had consulted with the Foreign Minister and the Foreign Ministry's Permanent Secretary. Additionally, she discussed the issue with Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who called to report on his visit to Ubon Ratchathani province to closely monitor the situation and evaluate the overall picture. - Photo: The Nation/ANN 'The Thai government reaffirms its commitment to resolving issues through peaceful means, with mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,' she said. Paetongtarn stated that regarding Cambodia's intention to involve the ICJ, the Thai government asserts that Thailand has not recognised the court's jurisdiction in disputes since 1960. She emphasised that the issue should be resolved strictly within the affected area, without widening the scope of the matter. "Thailand remains committed to the bilateral consultation mechanisms agreed upon by both parties to preserve the good relations between the peoples of the two nations," she said. - The Nation/ANN

Thai Army denies starting border clash, cites self-defence
BANGKOK: The Royal Thai Army has rejected Cambodia's claim that Thai troops fired first in a recent border skirmish, insisting the engagement at Chong Bok was a defensive response to an armed incursion. The Army says it remains committed to peaceful resolution, but is prepared to act if sovereignty is threatened. In response to Cambodia's Wednesday (June 4) statement regarding a recent border clash, the Royal Thai Army issued a clarification on Thursday (June 5), rejecting claims that Thai troops initiated the skirmish at Chong Bok late last month. Army spokesperson Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree stated that the accusation was untrue and emphasised that Thai forces had strictly adhered to rules of engagement. 'The Thai Army has consistently instructed its personnel to act with restraint and discipline,' he said, adding that the clash occurred as an act of individual-level self-defence. According to the Army, Thai troops received intelligence that armed Cambodian soldiers had crossed into Thai territory and set up positions. A small Thai patrol was sent to verify the situation, but was met with gunfire, leading to an exchange. The incident had previously been addressed through proper channels. Winthai further noted that Thailand has repeatedly attempted to resolve such border disputes through military-to-military dialogue as agreed upon by both countries. However, he pointed out a lack of serious cooperation from the Cambodian side in recent interactions. The spokesperson also revealed that the Royal Thai Army has heightened its readiness to conduct military operations if necessary to respond to sovereignty violations. Intelligence reports have indicated intensified military preparations by Cambodia, paired with ambiguous diplomatic signalling, which the Army views as concerning. In light of this, the Army Commander-in-Chief has ordered all units to maintain a high level of operational preparedness, in accordance with national defence plans, should peaceful efforts fail to resolve the situation. "The Army affirms that border operations are carried out with utmost care and based on a thorough understanding of the situation, aiming to prevent unnecessary losses. However, we remain fully prepared to defend national sovereignty if required," Winthai concluded. - The Nation/ANN
