Enhancing inter-regional collaboration and building resilience to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape marked by economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges will be high on the agenda of the 2nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Tuesday.
In his remarks at the opening of the summit in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar said the two parties had made rapid strides forward on their three key pillars of cooperation - political-security, economic and socio-cultural - since its inaugural summit two years ago, but this must now be strengthened to face new developments in global affairs.
"I believe the ASEAN-GCC partnership has never been more important than it is today, as we navigate an increasingly complex global landscape marked by economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges. ASEAN and the GCC have the means and the responsibility to rise as anchors of stability and engines of future growth," he said.
"A stronger ASEAN-GCC relationship will be key to enhancing inter-regional collaboration, building resilience and securing sustainable prosperity for our peoples," he said, adding that members of the two groupings must translate their shared vision into concrete and impactful cooperation.
For his part, Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah said the two active groups on the global stage are convening, each possessing enormous geographic, demographic and strategic strengths, which qualify them to be influential players and undertake important roles amidst the accelerating global economic transformations.
"The GCC was ASEAN's 7th largest trading partner in 2023, with a total trade volume of $130.7 billion. We anticipate this to grow by 30 percent, reaching $180 billion by 2032. The investment potential between both sides is vast," said the crown prince, whose nation holds the current rotating presidency of the GCC.
"We therefore emphasize the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation in economic, trade, investment and technical fields. We look forward to achieving positive outcomes in the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between both sides, which will boost investment opportunities and support regional supply chains," he added.
The summit brings together member states of ASEAN and GCC, which first met in this format in Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh, in 2023.
During the first summit, leaders of ASEAN and GCC countries adopted a joint statement to lay the foundation to upgrade and develop their partnership and welcomed the ASEAN-GCC Framework of Cooperation (2024-2028), which outlines measures and cooperation activities to be jointly undertaken.
These include specific targets in fields such as food security, renewable energy, innovation, adaptation to climate change, and combating terrorism and violent extremism.
On the same day, Anwar said at a press conference that Southeast Asian countries have reached a consensus to have an understanding on how to approach U.S. trade tariffs.
The leaders had agreed that decisions should not be taken at the expense of any other country, and in proceeding with bilateral trade negotiations with Washington, they agreed not to harm other ASEAN partners, Anwar added.

Ringgit ends higher on weaker US dollar, cautious inflation outlook

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by a weaker greenback following downbeat US economic data, as investors shifted into risk-on mode. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said traders and investors were weighing the prospects of an economic slowdown and the risk of higher inflation stemming from recent tariff shocks. 'This has led to a policy dilemma among federal open market committee (FOMC) members, and hence the scope for interest rate cuts is rather limited,' he told Bernama, adding that the next key data point would be the non-farm payroll (NFP) report due on Friday. Consensus estimates expect May's NFP to reach 130,000, down from 177,000 in April, while the unemployment rate is forecast to hold steady at 4.2%. PM expresses appreciation, applauds successful organisation of LIMA'25, ASEAN Summits

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all parties involved in the successful organisation of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25) and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits last month. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also MADANI Government spokesperson, said Anwar conveyed the appreciation message during today's Cabinet meeting, describing both events as historic milestones for Malaysia. 'The Prime Minister deeply values the efforts of all personnel and teams involved in organising LIMA'25 in Langkawi, as well as the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, at the end of May. 'Most heads of state and government leaders expressed their satisfaction with the warm hospitality and thorough preparations by Malaysia as the host,' Fahmi said at his weekly press conference. Fahmi said that the Prime Minister is currently considering appropriate forms of recognition to honour the dedication and commitment shown by all parties involved, with a formal announcement to be made in due course. 'Insya-Allah, several options are being considered, and we leave it to the Prime Minister to make the official announcement,' he said. LIMA'25 in Langkawi gathered 860 exhibitors from 24 countries, comprising 426 international and 434 local companies. Themed 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Achievements', this year's edition was the largest maritime and aerospace exhibition in Southeast Asia since LIMA's inception in 1991. In Kuala Lumpur, apart from the 46th ASEAN Summit, two high-level meetings were also successfully held last month, namely the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. The inaugural trilateral summit between ASEAN, GCC and China, which was also attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, not only marked a new chapter of strategic ties but also showcased Malaysia's commitment to enhancing regional economic cooperation. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Fahmi noted that the successful organisation of LIMA'25 and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits forms a strong foundation for Malaysia's hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit in October under its 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
