King Charles pens personal note for Joe Biden after his cancer diagnosis

Mint20-05-2025

Britain's King Charles penned a personal note for former US President Joe Biden after the news of his cancer diagnosis.
According to the PEOPLE's report, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King, who himself is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer, personally penned the message of support.
The contents of the letter remain private.
On Sunday, May 18, Joe Biden's office revealed that the former US president, 82, had been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.
The diagnosis came after Joe Biden reported experiencing urinary symptoms, prompting doctors to conduct further tests, which revealed a concerning nodule on his prostate.
Biden's prostate cancer has been classified as Stage 4, with a Gleason score of 9—indicating one of the most aggressive forms of the disease—and has already spread to the bones, reported The New York Times, citing a statement from the ex-POTUS's office.
Biden took to X to thank the public for the 'love and support' following the news of his cancer and said, 'Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.'
In February 2024, Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles, 76, had been diagnosed with cancer and had started treatment.
Although he was hospitalised a month earlier for an enlarged prostate, palace officials later clarified that his cancer is not prostate-related.
Shortly after the news broke, Biden had expressed his 'concern' for the King, adding that "God willing," he'd be speaking to him soon in better health.
The two leaders have met in person on multiple occasions, dating back to when Joe Biden was vice president and King Charles was still the Prince of Wales.
Biden was the 13th and final US president Queen Elizabeth met before her passing in September 2022, and the first King Charles met after ascending the throne.

ED seizes ₹100 cr in Muda land case, dummy owners linked to officials

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached 92 properties worth ₹100 crore in connection with the alleged Mysore Urban Development Authority (Muda) land allotment scam, taking the total value of seized assets in the case to ₹400 crore. The central agency said in a statement on Tuesday that the attached assets were registered under the names of housing cooperative societies and individuals who allegedly acted as 'fronts' or dummy owners for influential persons, including Muda officials. The ED probe is based on an FIR registered by the Mysore branch of the Lokayukta Police under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is among those named in the complaint. Scam involved backdated letters, dummy owners According to the ED, the scam involved large-scale irregularities in the allotment of Muda sites, executed through violations of legal procedures, government orders, and fraudulent means. 'The role of ex-Muda commissioners including GT Dinesh Kumar has emerged as instrumental in illegal allotment of compensation sites to ineligible entities/individuals,' the ED said. Investigators found that in many instances, site allotment letters were backdated to give legitimacy to illegal transactions. Bribes were allegedly paid to officials to facilitate the process, routed both through cash and banking channels involving cooperative societies and the accounts of associates and family members of Muda officials. Funds allegedly recycled to conceal illegal gains In several cases, the proceeds from these bribes were used to repurchase the illegally allotted sites in the names of relatives of those involved in the scam, effectively creating a paper trail that ED officials have now traced. This is the second round of major attachments in the case. Earlier, the ED had attached 160 sites valued at approximately ₹300 crore. Further investigation is ongoing, the agency said.

MUDA ‘scam': ED attaches sites worth Rs 100 crore in Mysuru

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday provisionally attached 92 immovable properties in Mysuru, with a market value of Rs 100 crore, in connection with the alleged Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam. The ED attached the MUDA sites under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, stating that the properties were registered in the name of entities such as individuals and housing cooperative societies serving as fronts or dummies for influential people, including MUDA officials. The ED initiated an investigation based on an FIR registered by the Lokayukta police in Mysuru under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and others. The investigation revealed 'a large-scale scam in allotment of MUDA sites by flouting various statutes and government orders/ guidelines and by other fraudulent means', the ED said in a statement. The central agency further said that the role of ex-MUDA commissioners, including G T Dinesh Kumar, has emerged as 'instrumental in illegal allotment of compensation sites to ineligible entities/individuals'. The evidence, with respect to obtaining bribes for making illegal allotments in the form of cash, bank transfer, movable or immovable properties, has been gathered during the investigation, the ED said. According to the agency, the modus operandi for making illegal allotments involved the identification of ineligible beneficiaries and making allotments using fake or incomplete documents in direct violation of government orders and also backdating of allotment letters in some cases. The gratification received for making such illegal allotments was routed through a co-operative society and bank accounts of the relatives or associates of the officers playing key roles in the allotment process, the ED added. 'The gratification thus received was further used to purchase some of these illegally allotted MUDA sites in the name of relatives of MUDA officers,' the ED said in its statement. The present attachment of 92 MUDA sites follows the previous attachment of 160 MUDA sites with a market value of approximately Rs 300 crore.

Trump vs Musk: US President breaks silence on former DOGE chief's ‘drug use' in White House, says ‘Don't know… hope not'

'Hoping' that tech billionaire Elon Musk never used illicit substances in the White House, US President Donald Trump finally broke his silence over whether his former 'First Buddy's' alleged drug use. According to a report published in Daily Beast, Trump said he's not sure whether Musk used drugs in the White House. These are Trump's first reported public comments about Musk's alleged drug use. 'I really don't know. I don't think so; I hope not. I wish him well. We had a good relationship and I just wish him well; very well actually," the report quoted Trump as saying. A report published in The New York Times earlier this month levelled bombshell allegations against Elon Musk, who the report claimed excessively consumed drugs while serving as Trump's closest advisors, as well as the chief of Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The report said that Musk was consuming Ketamine so regularly that it was causing him bladder problems. The report, which quoted multiple sources, also accused Musk of using ecstasy and hallucinogenic mushrooms, and claimed that he was known to travel with a pill box that contained the ADHD drug Adderall. While Musk acknowledged taking ketamine, which he said was prescribed for him to treat depression, he rejected all other allegations, the Daily Beast report said. Musk rejected allegations of drug abuse during his final press conference in the Oval Office with the president, and characterised the New York Times report as fake news. Earlier this month, bromance between the two ended, with both of them engaging in ugly public spats, after Musk criticised Trump's 'big, beautiful bill', calling it a 'disgusting abomination'. Thus began a very public, and a rather nasty ending to a blossoming and close friendship. Trump called Musk 'crazy', suggesting the latter had 'Trump derangement syndrome'. As the world watched in amazement, both men brawled over who deserved credit for Trump's election victory, Musk's billions of dollars donation to Trump's election campaign, and finally, Trump's supposed links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. 'Trump initially threatened to cancel billions of dollars of the SpaceX founder's federal contracts. Reports also emerged last week that the president planned to sell or get rid of the red Tesla he bought in March in a dubious favour to Musk, whose electric vehicle company was facing a major backlash over his DOGE cuts,' the Daily Beast report said.
