Delhi govt cracks down on private school fee hikes, plans ordinance
According to a report by news agency ANI, the draft ordinance has already been sent to the Law Department for vetting. It proposes the formation of committees at the school, district, and review levels to assess and approve fee structures.
The bill was initially scheduled for presentation during a special legislative session on May 13–14, which was later cancelled. It is now expected to be tabled as a full bill in the upcoming Monsoon Session.
DPS Dwarka incident triggers public outrage
The move follows mounting concerns over unregulated fee hikes, particularly after a controversy involving DPS Dwarka, where several students were reportedly expelled for failing to pay increased fees. The Delhi High Court intervened, terming the school's actions 'inhuman' and ordering the reinstatement of affected students upon partial payment of the hiked fee. Parents alleged that 'bouncers' were deployed to block entry, and some students were confined to the library.
Show-cause notices served to defaulting schools
On April 16, the government issued show-cause notices to 10 schools accused of arbitrary fee increases and failing to submit mandatory audit reports. So far, the government has collected audit reports from 600 schools, though the names of the penalised institutions have not been disclosed.
New audit framework and corruption checks planned
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood earlier told ANI that a 'strong documentation system' would be established to scrutinise past approvals of fee hikes, investigate potential corruption, and prevent future malpractice. 'We will not tolerate any such malpractice under any circumstances,' he said.
'We aim to collect audit reports from all 1,670 schools in Delhi. There will be no room for dishonesty,' Sood had said.
Chief Minister vows to protect students and parents
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has also reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring fair treatment of parents and students. She has stated that unauthorised fee hikes and harassment will not be tolerated under her administration.

Delhi's CM Shri Schools Get 50,000 Applications Just Days After Opening
Just days after admissions opened, Delhi's newly launched CM Shri Schools are witnessing an unexpected rush. More than 50,000 parents have already applied for seats, officials said on Tuesday. Figures from the Education Department show a surge across all grades, nearly 15,000 applications for Class 6, over 15,000 for Class 7, and more than 20,000 for Class 8. Education Minister Ashish Sood called the response "extraordinary," adding that the government would ensure the admission process remains transparent. The CM Shri Schools, announced in the Delhi government's 2025-26 budget, are modeled on the Centre's PM Shri scheme and aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. Each upgraded government school is planned to feature smart classrooms, AI-enabled libraries, AR-VR tools, biometric attendance, and robotics labs, alongside eco-friendly infrastructure. For parents, the facilities, usually associated with private schools, are proving to be the biggest draw. Many see the initiative as a chance to secure advanced, tech-driven education without steep fees. With applications crossing the 50,000 mark in less than a week, officials say the numbers underline both the scale of demand and the pressure on the system to deliver. The rush for CM Shri Schools signals a clear trend, parents in Delhi are ready to back government schools if they can match quality with accessibility. The coming months will test whether the model can meet expectations inside classrooms, not just on paper.

Govt approves ₹62,000 crore deal to buy 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets
In a major boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India in defence project, India on Tuesday cleared the project for buying 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The final approval for the acquisition of 97 LCA Mark 1A fighters was given by a high-level meeting today and will pave the way for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce the aircraft, defence sources told ANI. This will be the second order for the LCA Mark 1A fighters, as the government has already placed orders for 83 aircraft a few years ago for around Rs 48,000 crore. The programme will help the IAF to replace its fleet of MiG- 21s, which are finally being phased out by the government in next few weeks, they said. The indigenous fighter aircraft programme, fully backed by Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters is set to be a big boost for promoting indigenisation as well as give major business to the small and medium enterprises engaged in defence business across the country, they said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for the revival of the HAL, which has bagged orders for building all types of indigenous fighter aircraft, helicopters, along with the engines for them under his government. The Prime Minister had also undertaken a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter, which was first-ever sortie by the Prime Minister of India in any combat aircraft. The plan to acquire 97 more LCA Mark 1A fighter jets was also announced first by the then Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on foreign soil in Spain when he told ANI about the mega plans to boost the indigenous fighter aircraft orders. The LCA Mark 1A plane has more advanced avionics and radars than the initial 40 LCAs being supplied to the Air Force. The indigenous content in the new LCA Mark1As is going to be more than 65 per cent. The programme has been the harbinger of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives of the nation. More importantly, it is a flag bearer of India's self-reliance in the aerospace sector. The HAL is also set to bag deals for buying over 200 LCA Mark 2s and a similar number of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.
