Vlisco Group CEO Perry Oosting on Met Gala Theme, Connection With Company's Roots in African Culture
MILAN — The Met Gala and the Costume Institute's spring exhibition 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' is fast approaching. Vlisco Group is especially interested in seeing how the theme and the dress code, 'Tailored for You,' will be developed, said Perry Oosting, chief executive officer of the Dutch maker of bold and colorful printed textiles marketed mainly in West Africa.
'We think the theme perfectly aligns with our physical identity. If you look at African dandyism, and if you look at our cultural reference, we feel we have a really authentic connection,' Oosting explained. 'Our fabrics have long been transformed by African tailors into garments that tell deeply personal, cultural stories. People purchase our fabrics with the intent to have them tailored into unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect their individuality.'

Vlisco fabrics are rooted in the Indonesian wax-batik technique. Founded in 1846, they have been embraced by West African culture, becoming a symbol of self-expression, tradition and celebration.
For example, civil rights activist and writer Kwame Ture, and South African singer, actress and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba 'embraced our prints, and even visited our factory in the Netherlands seen as a cultural reference for the deep symbolism of pride, resilience and identity they carry, because they wanted to express their identity,' Oosting said. 'Our fabrics have been worn by leaders and visionaries who understood the power of fashion as a statement of belonging. Vlisco prints are more than just textiles, they are a language of personal and cultural expression.
'I am very curious to see how the tailoring is going to be expressed [at the Met show], and African dandyism, as Vlisco has been part of that tailoring culture. People express themselves in a very individual way and I see many luxury brands showing an interest in the African luxury market,' Oosting continued. 'It would be exciting to witness collaborations and the involvement of a diverse array of African designers and voices, representing the full breadth and depth of this rich narrative, and to see how Vlisco could also be kind of like a point of reference, because if there's one brand that has roots and connection with Africa, it's Vlisco.
'Brands today demand authenticity, connection and purpose. Vlisco presents all of this. Rooted in culture and rich history, our prints are not just fabrics — they are art, stories and a way for people to connect with something greater than themselves. Oosting, who joined Vlisco in the spring of 2023, has worked in luxury fashion for decades. He is currently also CEO and shareholder of luxury ready-to-wear brand A.W.A.K.E. Mode and CEO of Perely BV supporting Hussein Chalayan for its relaunch strategy and investor search. Previously, he was CEO of Clergerie; CEO of Hasselblad, and CEO of Vertu.
In the 1989 to 2009 period he was retail director of Gucci and commercial director of Gucci jewelry; general manager North & Eastern Europe at Prada, and managing director North & Eastern Europe at Bulgari.
'I'm a Dutch national, so of course I have known Vlisco for many, many years,' he said. The company 'is so ingrained in and part of the African culture as a symbol of self expression, tradition and celebration. The bond with Africa is so strong because Vlisco was part of all the moments that matter to many people in Africa and our products are sometimes called African print, although the starting point was The Netherlands.'
Vlisco Group comprises the Vlisco, Uniwax, GTP and Woodin brands, with headquarters and retail destinations in Ivory Coast, Congo, Togo, Benin and the Democratic Republic of Congo. 'Our commitment to Africa is more than a business; it's a partnership grounded in respect, culture and community: it's our home,' Oosting said. The company has 2,100 employees, of whom 1,600 are across Africa and 500 in The Netherlands.
Vlisco has six owned stores in Africa and a new one, Maison Vlisco, will open in Kinshasa, Congo, this year, designed in collaboration with OMA and Rem Koolhaas. 'The store features exquisite storytelling craft interior pieces by Jean Servais Simian from Abidjan,' Oosting said.
'Our 180th anniversary in 2026 will be a milestone. Beyond textiles, we are expanding into new products and forging global, meaningful brand and cultural collaborations — continuing to create purpose, deep connections and lasting impact through the most beautiful prints in new and inspiring ways,' said Oosting, who cited a previous collaboration with Viktor & Rolf, for example.

Relooted is a heist game about reclaiming African artifacts from the Western countries that stole them, developed by independent South African studio Nyamakop. Relooted is set in a future timeline where Western nations have signed a treaty to return plundered items to their African regions of origin, but things aren't going to plan. Western leaders are instead hiding the artifacts away in private collections, so it's up to a ragtag crew based in Johannesburg, South Africa, to strategize and steal them back. Relooted is broken into missions, and each one includes a briefing about the artifact, an infiltration planning stage, and the heist. Gameplay is a mix of puzzle and action as you case each building, set up your run, and then execute the plan. In the Day of the Devs reveal video for Relooted , producer Sithe Ncube cites a wild statistic from a pivotal 2018 report on African cultural heritage, saying, "90 percent of sub-Saharan African culture heritage is in the possession of Western collections. That is millions upon millions of deeply important cultural, spiritual and personal artifacts, including human remains, that aren't in their rightful place." The locations in Relooted are fictional, but the 70 artifacts you have to steal back are real, and they're all currently in Western and private collections, far from their original homes and owners. Nyamakop is one of the largest independent games studios in sub-Saharan Africa, with about 30 developers working on Relooted right now. Its previous game, the globular platformer Semblance , was the first African-developed IP to ever come to a Nintendo console, hitting the Switch in 2018. In order to get Semblance on the Switch, Nyamakop co-founder Ben Myres had to bootstrap his way around the world, buying one-way tickets and finding new partners on the fly in a daisy chain of game festival appearances. Here's how Myres explained it to Engadget at E3 2018: "The entry curve into being an indie game developer in South Africa is like a cliff face. Because you don't have the contacts, the platform holders like Xbox, Sony. You don't have reps that live in your country. The press that matter are all here. There isn't a big enough market locally to sell to, so you have to make works to sell to the West, which means you have to go to Western shows and you have to meet Western press. So basically, if you're not traveling a ton, you're not going to be able to make it." Nyamakop has grown significantly since 2018, and Relooted is an unabashedly African game built by a majority-POC team, Myres and Ncube said in 2024. "There is the thing about making games for Africans — we say that a lot," Ncube told . "We say that should be a thing, we should make games for Africans because we're playing games that were made in the West. But will people even play those games, if you make them? And then if you make games targeting people ... even if you were to make one that's really good, there's no guarantee that you'll have a lot of people playing it. So I think there's some level of confusion, I can say, in terms of unexplored aspects of the African games market." Relooted is in development for Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox Series X/S, and while it doesn't yet have a firm release date, it's available to wishlist.

Meet 88rising's New Girl Group
This May, 88rising unveiled its latest girl group: no na. The Indonesian quartet — made up of members Christy, Baila, Esther and Shaz — debuted with the soaring single 'Shoot,' illustrating the group's knack for vocal harmonies and love of R&B. Its second single, 'Superstitious,' leaned more into pop, and the group says that sweet spot between the two genres is where no na will thrive. The foursome made its live debut this month as 88rising's annual Head In the Clouds: L.A., their adoptive home after relocating from Indonesia last year to focus on music full time. In December 2022, 88rising brought its celebrated Head in the Clouds festival to Jakarta, Indonesia — marking the event's first time in Asia and also becoming the unwitting origin story of the label's newest girl group, no na. Members Baila, Shaz and Christy all met at the festival — and exchanged quick, tepid handshakes, they joke today. While Shaz and Christy come from dance backgrounds, Baila was pursuing music as a solo act at the time, having competed on Indonesian Idol Junior. Six months later, Esther, a singer who had competed on season 10 of Indonesian Idol, completed the quartet, and they started training together in Jakarta with joint dance and vocal lessons. 'That's when we started spending every single day together,' Esther says. Baila adds: 'Indonesians are pretty easygoing, and it was so easy for us to get along. We didn't have to try to like each other.' The four members of no na were all stealthily scouted by 88rising, an effort helmed by founder and CEO Sean Miyashiro. But when one particular project manager reached out, 'We didn't know that she was from 88,' Esther recalls with a laugh. 'They just mentioned, 'Would you like to be part of a global girl group?' That kind of scared us at first.' But Shaz jokes, 'We stalked her,' and found out that they had a legitimate offer to not only form a global girl group but also move halfway across the world to Los Angeles. (The four members moved there in 2024, sharing an apartment.) While they were immediately aligned on their influences — 'pop, reggae, jazz; we all love R&B,' Esther says, shouting out Victoria Monét and FLO as well as 'the classics' like Janet Jackson and Diana Ross — they struggled to agree on a group name. After combing through more than 200 options, they agreed on 'no na' — a riff on nona, which means 'miss' in Indonesian. Spotlighting its native country is a priority for no na — from the group's visuals, like filming the stunning music video for debut song 'Shoot' back home, to its lyrics, which will incorporate Indonesian phrases. 'We want to represent our country to the world, where not a lot of people are familiar with everything about Indonesia,' Shaz says. The act has started to spread the word worldwide: In May, it made its live debut at Head in the Clouds: L.A., which was a full-circle moment. As Esther says: 'A dream came true for us.' In August 2002, he made history by defeating Ken Shamrock to become the first-ever recognized African-American NWA World Heavyweight Champion. It was a title he would go on to hold a second time. During his TNA tenure, he also showcased his charisma as a founding member of the popular 3Live Kru faction alongside Konnan and B.G. James (formerly Road Dogg in WWE). TNA is where he also held tag team gold. His time in TNA featured a more serious and aggressive persona compared to the comedic character he later perfected in his second, lengthy WWE run.
