LABUAN: Police seized 21 motorcycles along Jalan Sungai Miri, near University Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL), during a two-day integrated operation against illegal racing on Sunday and Monday (May 11 to 12). Labuan Police Chief Supt Mohd Hamizi Halim said the operation was launched following public complaints about street gang activities involving dangerous stunts and loud modified exhausts in front of UMSKAL. 'Led by ASP Rechi Anak John Chuhing, the operation involved 22 officers, including a special undercover unit. 'Surveillance and identification were first carried out by the undercover team before two simultaneous roadblocks were set up, one at Jalan Sungai Pagar near Petronas Carigali and the other in front of Sekolah Menegah Sains Labuan,' he said Tuesday, adding that a Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit was also mobilised to disperse the crowd. 'Many motorcyclists fled in all directions upon detecting the presence of police, with several riders arrested at the scene and others escaping towards the beach, abandoning their motorcycles. 'All 21 seized motorcycles were found to be involved in various offences such as riding without valid licences, expired road tax, missing registration plates and illegal structural and exhaust modifications,' he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? They should be suspended, not relocated, says DAP

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Chan emphasised the need for a zero-tolerance approach to any perception of interference or undue influence on witnesses, students, or school staff, adding that the safety, dignity and justice for students must take precedence over administrative convenience. Kota Kinabalu: Dapsy Sabah has called on the Education Ministry (MOE) to immediately suspend the principal, senior assistant for student affairs and wardens of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in connection with the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir, instead of merely relocating them. Its chief, Chan Loong Wei, said the officers have been temporarily assigned to the Sabah State Education Department (JPN Sabah) pending investigation, but stressed that suspension is a more urgent and necessary measure to ensure the probe is conducted independently and without interference. 'Mere relocation is not enough. These officers must be suspended until investigations are completed and they are proven innocent. 'Allowing individuals under investigation to remain in active positions, even at different locations, risks eroding public confidence in the integrity of the investigation process,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. Chan emphasised the need for a zero-tolerance approach to any perception of interference or undue influence on witnesses, students, or school staff, adding that the safety, dignity and justice for students must take precedence over administrative convenience. He noted that suspension during investigations is standard practice in serious cases, particularly those involving the death of a student. He also reiterated Dapsy Sabah's solidarity with the victim's family and the people of Sabah in demanding accountability and transparency. 'Justice must not only be done, but must also be seen to be done,' Chan said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police investigate viral road crash in Sungai Petani involving Toyota and Nissan

SUNGAI PETANI: The police have received two reports regarding a road crash involving a Toyota Corolla and a Nissan Grand Livina on Jalan Sekerat near here, which has gone viral on social media since last night. A viral video of the incident showed a Nissan car, driven by a man in his 30s, being hit by a Toyota Corolla with a man in his 40s at the wheel. Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan, in a statement today, stated that the crash was believed to have occurred at about 1.30 pm yesterday. He said the driver of the Nissan Grand Livina claimed that a Toyota Corolla crashed into his car, causing him to follow the vehicle, but after trailing the Toyota Corolla for about a kilometre, the driver swerved the car and rammed into the right side of his (Nissan) car. 'The driver of the Toyota car then got out of his car and challenged and cursed the driver of the Nissan car before leaving the scene,' he said. He said the reports were lodged last night by the driver of the Nissan car, while the other, by the mother of the driver of the Toyota Corolla. The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and endangering life, and Regulation 10 of the Road Traffic Regulations 1959 for failing to properly control the movement of vehicles, causing an accident. - Bernama
