These hyper-realistic pencil artworks are raising awareness of visible skin differences

CNN4 hours ago

Known for his hyper-realistic pencil artworks, Kelvin Okafor is using his latest exhibition to call attention to visible skin differences.
'Drawing Awareness,' at London's Hope93 Gallery, features portraits of both ordinary people and celebrities, including Canadian fashion model Winnie Harlow, who has the skin condition vitiligo, Grammy-winning pop star Seal, who has facial scarring from a form of the autoimmune disease lupus, and acid attack survivor Katie Piper.
'It's a very emotional process, because all of the models have skin conditions, whether genetic or environmental, that have left scars not just on the surface but within,' said Okafor.
Okafor first found fame on social media more than a decade ago with his pencil portraits of notable figures, including Amy Winehouse and Mother Teresa, drawn from their photographs, and he's since had multiple group and solo exhibitions. For 'Drawing Awareness,' he again worked from photographs of his subjects but spoke to many of them beforehand to get to know them.
'The process before putting pen to paper is one of patience, stillness and compassion,' Okafor explained.
'Listening to my subjects' stories often stirred very deep emotions in me and made me reflect on my own life. Not in a negative way, but it changed how I see the world and helped me realize that it's truly a blessing to be comfortable in the skin we're in.'
Each drawing is paired with the sitter's personal story, which, like their portrait, challenges the viewer to see beyond the surface.
Okafor says he spent up to 900 hours on a single drawing, and was absorbed in his subjects' stories as he studied their voice, body language and psychology.
This emotional connection, he said, is essential: 'It enables me to work long hours, because I'm honoring their condition. If I didn't feel that emotional connection, I don't think I would serve as much time.'
Okafor often draws for 14 hours a day, waking up at 5:30am for meditation and exercise, then beginning to draw around 11am.
He works in focused stretches, taking breaks to recharge, and gets about four hours of sleep each night. 'It sounds intense,' he admitted, 'but I get lost in it because it feels like it's preparing me for something bigger.'
Born and raised in London, with Nigerian parents, Okafor's interest in skin differences has roots in his childhood.
'When I was young, visiting Nigeria with my family, I often saw people with albinism but didn't understand what it was,' he recalls. 'Out of curiosity, I would ask myself, 'Don't they get suntanned? Why are they so light?''
Returning to London, he noticed how rare it was to see people with albinism there.
'When I finally had the chance to draw someone with albinism for this project, it felt like I could answer the question I'd been asking myself as a child,' he said.
Okafor first drew Harlow in 2019, and it was a revelation for him. 'It made me realize that, although we live in a world with very strict beauty ideals, here was someone in the modeling industry who has a very visible difference and has carved out space for so many others with skin conditions and unique features,' he said.
This experience made him question what beauty is. 'People often say it's about symmetry, height, weight, but is it really?' he said. 'Beauty is something much deeper than the surface … almost intangible. It is something that radiates within a person.'
Hope93 Gallery was created as a space with inclusion 'at its heart,' looking to 'connect communities using art as a starting point,' according to its website.
'What drew me to 'Drawing Awareness' is the importance of seeing inner beauty,' said Hope93 founder Aki Abiola, whose gallery is named in honor of his late father, MKO Abiola, who ran for president in Nigeria's 1993 elections.
'We live in an age where looks often shape how people judge others, which I believe is unfair. When you learn the stories behind people's lives, you begin to understand them better. I think that's exactly what Kelvin is trying to reveal: the beauty within.'
Okafor says he wants to further raise awareness by working with charities such as Face Equality International, Changing Faces, or the Katie Piper Foundation, which have all partnered to present Drawing Awareness.
'I would love for people who have similar conditions to feel seen and included,' said Okafor.
'People who don't, I want them to see this as an opportunity to learn more, to be enlightened.'
The exhibition runs until July 3 2025.

UK Actors Union Says 'Thousands Of Performers' Have Been 'Digitally Scanned On Set Without Their Informed Consent' In Open Letter To Pact

EXCLUSIVE: Thousands of UK actors have been 'digitally scanned on set without their informed consent,' according to an open letter from Brit actors union Equity urging progress on artificial intelligence as it returns to the negotiating table with Pact. Deadline is told the likes of British actors Tamsin Greig, Alan Davies, Nicola Walker and Wilf Scolding have so far signed the letter, which was published last week. More from Deadline Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" Can Retain Provision That Bans States From Regulating AI, Senate Parliamentarian Concludes Bruce Lee & Jackie Chan Films Among Kung Fu Classics Set For AI Restorations Screenwriter Scott Z. Burns' New Podcast Poses The Question: Is AI Itself A 'Contagion' Sequel? 'We also have no transparency around how our performances, likeness and personal data are being recorded, stored and processed within the context of the production and beyond,' Equity wrote, in the letter to Pact that has amassed nearly 1,500 signatures. The letter comes a day before Equity and the producer trade body are due to sit down for yet another round of negotiations on a set of new collective agreements that has been rumbling for around 12 months, with AI safeguards proving quite the sticking point. Equity has been upping the stakes in recent months, with re-elected General Secretary Paul Fleming saying the union is 'industrial action ready' if negotiations keep failing while the union threatened court action to the BBC, ITV, Disney and Pact if members rights are breached in the training of AI models. 'We are writing ahead of your negotiation meeting with Equity Officials on 25 June to express concern at the lack of progress on securing AI protections for performers,' wrote Equity in the open letter. 'We believe this is unacceptable and urge Pact to prioritise this crucial area affecting our industry and livelihoods.' Pact declined comment. Using the new U.S. SAG-AFTRA contacts as a partial blueprint, Equity's claim with Pact is tailored to the implications of generative AI for different categories of actor including dubbing and supporting artists. Equity said it has put forward 'a constructive proposal' including 'important provisions on AI training, which the union has made clear is a red line in these negotiations.' 'We will not accept any deal that does not grant us key protections for the use of our personal data for training AI systems and creating AI-generated performances,' it added today. The collective agreements being negotiated govern the vast majority of British TV shows and indie movies. Adding to the confusion, the BBC and ITV's separate agreements with Equity failed to include artificial intelligence safeguards as the broadcasters did not want to include them until the Equity-Pact negotiations are resolved. The broadcasters have insisted that 'discussion around AI provisions remains firmly on the table.' The move comes as the UK government considers legislation that would mean copyright holders must opt-out from having their material used for training generative AI models. A BFI report earlier this month revealed that scripts from more than 130,000 films and TV shows have been used to train such models. Mobland Season 2: Fans Finally Have An Answer About The Future Of The Show

MobLand fans have finally been given the update they've been waiting weeks for. On Monday evening, Paramount+ confirmed that they were renewing the crime drama for a new batch of episodes, meaning a second season is officially in the works. The weekly 10-part series premiered in March, and features an impressive cast led by Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Dame Helen Mirren. Chris McCarthy, an exec at Paramount, enthused: 'With more than 26 million viewers and climbing, MobLand has become a resounding triumph – driven by the creative brilliance of Guy [Ritchie], Jez [Butterworth], Ronan [Bennett] and David Glasser, and brought to life by the powerhouse performances of Tom, Pierce, and Helen. 'We are elated to greenlight a second season of this global phenomenon, which has dominated both domestic and international charts and soared to number one in the UK.' As MobLand's audience grew over the weeks that season one was streaming, it quickly became one of Paramount+'s most talked-about originals, with its premiere episode pulling in the platform's highest ever viewing figures. It was executive produced by Guy Ritchie, whose recent forays into TV have included Netflix's The Gentlemen and the upcoming origin story Young Sherlock, based on his movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Tom Hardy previously shared his hopes that MobLand would be renewed during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in April, claiming: 'The plan is definitely to see more seasons. The question is: Does it become international?' He continued: 'There are international elements to organised crime, which are touched on in season one and the control of drugs and ammunition and weapons and people and all kinds of things that go through Europe and from Africa through to South America, Pakistan and the variable commodities that move around Europe. 'There are families that are involved in each European country that are vying for power to have that status to be able to move these kind of commodities through and who polices that and how that fits into a world stage.
