Finally, a Netflix dating show for us painfully awkward introverts

As someone who enjoys both a) watching people fall in love, and b) any form of entertainment that allows my overactive brain to switch off – or, even better, rot a little – dating shows are one of my fave genres. The Bachelor, Love Is Blind, Married at First Sight, The Farmer Wants a Wife, Love Triangle, Too Hot to Handle … you name it, I've watched at least one episode of it (and probably 167 more).
But lately I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with the genre, as more and more shows became less about people finding a match and more about them getting half a million followers on Instagram and/or a foot in the door of the Netflix Dating Show Cinematic Universe, which seems more viable as a career path than an actual road to romance. And while I enjoy hate-watching and drama and epic dinner-party showdowns as much as the next reality-TV fan, I also actually, genuinely want to watch people I like find love and happiness – a concept that's alarmingly rare in a genre in which that is ostensibly the whole premise.
Enter: Better Late Than Single, a new South Korean dating show that is so compelling it's quickly become my favourite I've watched in a long time. The conceit is that the contestants have never actually been in a relationship before – and not in a 'party boy who only hooks up' kinda way (like most of the cast of Love Island, for instance). No, the Better Late Than Single cohort are more the 'so awkward they can't even make eye contact' variety. There's even a term for them in Korean – motae solo, which basically translates as 'single since mother's womb' or, as Netflix more succinctly subtitles it in English, 'eternally single'.
That's right, the cast are all – and I say this with the utmost affection – massive losers. Massive, relatable losers. In other words, they're just like us! In the first episode, one contestant says she's single because she hates leaving the house – like, one time she didn't go outside for a whole month and she forgot how to actually talk to people. Relatable! Another contestant reveals she just has high standards – like, if someone moves their eyebrows too much or holds their chopsticks wrong, she gets the ick. Relatable! Then there's the guy who just wants to wear pop culture T-shirts and eat delicious food and do karaoke alone every day. Relatable!

Pierce Brosnan offers top tip to next James Bond actor

Pierce Brosnan's advice for the next actor to play James Bond is to "be bold" and "have a great time". The 72-year-old actor played 007 in four movies from 1995 to 2002; GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. As one of only seven actors to have played Bond on the big screen, Brosnan has offered some words of wisdom to the man who takes over the tuxedo following Daniel Craig's final film No Time To Die. Speaking to Extra at the premiere of his new movie The Thursday Murder Club, he said: "Be bold. Enjoy it. Know yourself, be strong, go out there and have a great time." And Pierce insists whoever is lucky enough to be cast as the British spy will see their life totally changed by the iconic role. He added: "There's so many wonderful actors. It's a magnificent role. Whoever finds the role, it will change their life." In his new Netflix film, The Thursday Murder Club, Brosnan stars alongside Dame Helen Mirren, 80, Sir Ben Kingsley, 81, and Celia Imrie, 73. The movie is adapted from Richard Osman's bestselling book about a group of retirees who come together to try and solve a murder, and Brosnan admits it was Osman's writing and the quality of the characters that attracted him to the project. He said: "It's just the humanity of it. It takes courage to get old, to be yourself. At any age, it really takes courage to live life, and these people are full of vibrancy and they're full of passion. One wants to live, so that's what it's about." Dune director Denis Villeneuve has been confirmed to be helming the next James Bond film, but the identity of the next 007 is still not known. Actors who have been named as possible successors to Daniel Craig include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Wolves of War star Scott Rose-Marsh, Mike Dickman, Tom Hardy and former Superman star Henry Cavill.

Matt Wright trial: Pilot's alleged spray at boss over stormy weather egg collection request

A young pilot told the Outback Wrangler to 'get f--ked, get vaccinated and go fly his own helicopter' after his boss chewed him out for pulling out of an unsafe mission. Sebastian Robinson on Friday finished giving evidence after being grilled over four days in the trial of Aussie reality television star, Matt Wright. The Apple TV and Netflix star has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice during the investigation into a chopper crash that killed his co-star Chris 'Willow' Wilson. It is not alleged Mr Wright is responsible for the crash. On Friday the Northern Territory jury heard about the 'Australia Day incident' where the 28-year-old pilot and Mr Wright had a fight a month before the fatal crash. Mr Robinson said on January 26, he, Mr Wilson and fellow pilot Michael Burbidge were contracted for a crocodile egg collecting mission at the mouth of the Daly River, in the NT. The jury was shown photos of the chopper with an oncoming Wet Season storm looming in the background. Mr Robinson said he radioed Mr Burbidge to say 'it was too dangerous to continue, because the storm was huge', and they mutually agreed to head back into town. He said they went back to the Noonamah Tavern to watch the traditional Australia Day 'ute run' and have a 'beer and a feed'. Mr Robinson said Mr Wright called him 'very hostile and abusive', telling the young pilot 'What the f--k are youse doing back? Egg collecting's not meant to be f—king easy'. 'You sit out there, you f--king ... you wait the weather out. You f--king deal with it,' Mr Wright allegedly said. The jury has previously heard Mr Wright was not able to take part in egg collecting missions in early 2022 because he was an 'anti-vaxxer'. 'I told him to get f--ked, get vaccinated and fly his own helicopter,' Mr Robinson said on Friday. In a group chat with Mr Burbidge and Mr Wilson, the young pilot alleged Mr Wright 'called us all bludgers' for pulling out of the dangerous conditions. The young pilot this contributed to his decision to leave Mr Wright's Helibrook, and he establishing his own company Arnhem Helicopters. Mr Wright sent Mr Robinson a message the next day saying he was 'sorry for blowing up'. The trial continues on Monday.
