Irv Gotti, music producer and Murder Inc. founder, dead at 54

NBC News06-02-2025
Irv Gotti, a famed music producer and founder of the hip-hop label Murder Inc., died, the record label's distributor Def Jam said in a statement. He was 54.
"Def Jam Recordings and the extended Def Jam family of artists, executives and employees, are deeply saddened at the loss of Irv Gotti," the music company said in a post on Instagram.
Murder Inc. produced superstars Ashanti and Ja Rule, the label's first artist. Ja Rule landed his first top 40 Billboard Hot 100 with "Holla Holla" from his 1999 debut album "Venni Vetti Vecci," Billboard.com reported. The label's success skyrocketed, and between 1999 and 2005 Ja Rule had 17 total Hot 100 hits.
In 2002, Ashanti's hit "Foolish" exploded, spending 10 weeks at the top of the Hot 100 chart, according to Billboard. Ja Rule's "Always on Time" and Fat Joe's "What's Luv?" — both of which featured Ashanti — also became chart toppers.
Gotti produced nearly 30 Hot 100 hits for artists including Ashanti, Ja Rule, Ye, DMX, Fat Joe, Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z, Billboard reported. In 2003, he won a Grammy for co-producing Ashanti's debut studio album.
Def Jam said Gotti's contributions "helped pave the way for the next generation of artists and producers, a force that reshaped the soundscape of hip hop and R&B."
"His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture birthed countless hits, defining an era of music that continues to resonate with fans worldwide," Def Jam said. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his work."

Morgan Wallen gives a BRUTAL snub to next year's Grammy Awards despite having America's best-selling album

Morgan Wallen has made one of the most shocking decisions of his career. Despite having the best-selling album of the year with I'm The Problem, the country superstar, 32, is refusing to even enter the Grammys race after nearly a decade of snubs. On Tuesday, Billboard confirmed that Wallen's team will not be submitting his last record, or any of its 37 tracks, for consideration at the 2026 Grammy Awards. According to Hits Daily Double, which first broke the news, the boycott extends to all categories, including the songwriting categories and best country solo performance. The only exception: his camp isn't blocking other songwriters from submitting their own work from the project. The decision is a striking one given the success of the I'm the Problem, which produced four No. 1 singles on Billboard's Country Airplay chart and his chart-topper duet with Tate McRae, What I Want. For the Lies Lies Lies hitmaker, the choice may be as simple as not needing another trophy to validate his success or not feeling comfortable in the room. Earlier this year, he made headlines after abruptly leaving Saturday Night Live to return to 'God's country.' While it is an unspoken tradition for the guests and the cast to hug and mingle before the credits roll, he reportedly rushed off at the end of the show to head to the airport. At the time, Wallen's team told Variety that he had a good time on the show and did not mean to cause any offense with his quick exit and Instagram post. has reached out to Wallen's team for comment. Wallen's latest move highlights his fraught relationship with the Recording Academy over the past decade. The East Tennessee native has never earned a Grammy nomination for his solo work. His only nods came earlier this year for his collaboration with Post Malone on I Had Some Help, which scored two nominations and zero wins. That lack of recognition has become more glaring as Wallen's star has risen. His 2021 double album Dangerous was crowned Billboard's No. 1 album of the first 25 years of the century. Yet the Grammy voters all but ignored him, even in the best new artist category. Many have speculated that the Grammys has historically iced Wallen out due to his turbulent past and controversies. In 2021, he was caught on video using a racial slur, sparking industry backlash. He apologized and checked into rehab, while the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association both banned him from eligibility for a year. Since then, Nashville has welcomed him back. He's scored 13 CMA nominations and took home entertainer of the year in 2024. At the ACM Awards, he's been nominated 20 times post-scandal, winning three, including album of the year for Dangerous and male artist of the year in 2023. While Wallen's boycott is unusual, it's not unheard of. The Weeknd famously stopped submitting music after his After Hours album and hit track, Blinding Lights, were snubbed in 2021. At the time, he tweeted that the Grammys were 'corrupt.' Drake, too, has declined to participate, citing a lack of recognition for hip-hop. Even after a decade in the industry, Wallen, who launched to stardom after competing on The Voice at age 20 in 2014, recently admitted fame is 'still weird' to him. 'There's parts of that that I don't like,' he said on the Last Weekend podcast after his SNL exit made headlines. 'I think anybody who has to deal with that… it's not ideal.' 'It's not ideal to go everywhere, and even if you don't get bothered, you were on edge the whole time because you thought you might [be bothered],' he continued. 'There's things that you just don't do. There's just things you don't do anymore.' As for how he spends most of his free time, Wallen explained he usually goes hunting out with his buddies 'in the middle of nowhere' to be 'at ease.' 'I ain't been in a bar since the last time I was in a bar that everybody knows about,' he quipped referencing his notorious night out at Eric Church's bar in Nashville, which ended with an arrest for throwing a chair off the rooftop.

Here's 2025's best family movie of the year (and it's not KPop Demon Hunters)

KPop Demon Hunters proved to be one of Netflix's biggest successes this year, with the animated musical not only dominating global streaming charts but also the Billboard Hot 100 with songs like 'Golden' and 'Soda Pop'. Beloved by K-pop listeners and novices alike, KPop Demon Hunters deservedly earned a spot on Time Out's list of the best family movies of 2025 (so far). From the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2 to A Minecraft Movie, this year has offered us plenty of family-friendly options to catch up on. But perhaps the most impactful of them all has been a relatively low-budget feature from Latvia. We're talking about Flow, an animated odyssey of a cat and his new furry friends as they brave a flood in a creaky wooden boat. That simple premise is elevated by director Gints Zilbalodis's vision and animals that transcend languages and global borders. Flow opened in cinemas early this year and went on to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, cutting above big studio nominees like Disney's Inside Out 2 and DreamWorks's The Wild Robot. What makes Flow 's win all the more commendable is that the entire film was designed and animated in the free-to-use online software Blender. In fact, the Latvian filmmaker and animator even gave a shout-out to Blender during his acceptance speech. With children's animation traditionally relying on talking animals and cartoonish mannerisms, Flow is slightly unconventional in the sense that it emphasises hyper-realistic sounds and movements of its animals. The result is a hard-hitting watch without any spoken dialogue, further enhanced by the ambient, minimalist score co-composed by Zilbalodis himself. But with that being said, there's also plenty of fun to be had with Flow for younger audiences. The feline protagonist's curiosity leads him to a sleepy, Zen-like capybara, a hyperactive Labrador, and a kleptomaniac lemur. The talkless banter between the cat's four-legged companions, along with the visually immersive Blender worlds, makes Flow the finest family movie of the year. Quite the relaxing antidote to an overstimulated, screen-addicted generation.

Lil Yachty apologizes to Stephen Jackson over George Floyd lyric

"Put my knee up on her neck, I went George Floyd," Yachty rapped on the song, per Billboard. Jackson condemned the "One Night" rapper in a now-deleted Instagram post, calling the lyric "demeaning" and writing, "Don't ever say his name, bro. None of y'all knew G. Nothing about him." The San Antonio Spurs alum has long been open about the loss of his friend Floyd, revealing in 2020 that the pair grew up in the same Houston, Texas neighborhood. USA TODAY has reached out to Lil Yachty's representatives for comment. Jackson says Yachty apologized for distasteful lyric In an Aug. 14 Instagram story, the "All the Smoke" podcast host later revealed that he is no longer upset with Yachty after the musician reached out and apologized. "I took my post down about Yachty because I'm emotional about George. I apologized to him. We spoke and he apologized as well," Jackson said. "I salute him. Not a lot of people like to own up to when they [expletive] up." Jackson added that he agreed a public apology was unnecessary after the two worked things out, and as Yachty understands the frustration caused by the lyrics. He added that he never had an issue with Yachty directly, but rather the idea of it being okay for people to demean the dead. He later added in an Aug. 15 Instagram post that he won't be discussing the situation in interviews, adding that "he's a smart young man" and "We move on from it."
