Nihal Sarin qualifies for quarterfinal of E-sports World Cup, joins Arjun Erigaisi
Earlier in the day, Magnus Carlsen made it to the quarter-finals of the chess event, and he was also appreciative of Nihal's skills. Nihal carries a moniker for being one of the best players when it comes to speed chess.
Carlsen said his mouse speed is slow, and if he runs into someone like young Indian Nihal Sarin, it might turn into a dangerous match-up. 'I only played the two qualifier events to get here with this time control, but for me, it worked out okay. My mouse speed is not necessarily the best, but I play fast and well enough that it doesn't usually bother me,' said Carlsen to Chessbase India ahead of the Esports World Cup.
'We will see, however, you could run into really dangerous matchups here. For instance, we saw in the qualifier how incredibly good Nihal (Sarin) is with very little time on the clock. There could be certain players like him and Alireza (Firouzja); I think, especially if they have a good event, they can use that mouse speed to their advantage,' he added.
However, qualifying for the tournament was not as straightforward to Nihal. After failing to qualify at EWC through the two qualifiers, Nihal had to play through the Last Chance Qualifier in Riyadh, where he reached the finals of the Winner's Bracket after beating Russia's Andrey Esipenko, thus qualifying for the main event.
The Esports World Cup brings together top esports clubs across 24 popular titles. EWC 2025 is happening in Riyadh from July 7 to August 24, featuring chess as an online event for the first time. The inaugural 2024 edition spanned eight weeks, while the 2025 event will be history's largest multi-title esports tournament with 2,000+ players, 200+ teams, and a $70 million (≈₹602 crore) prize pool.

It is not easy to win the tournament, you have to play regularly for a month. I have played the World Cup two times, so I know how difficult it is to win,' Gukesh said in a Velammal Nexus event that was organised to felicitate Mount Everest conqueror Ashish. 'Both of them (Divya and losing finalist, veteran Koneru Humpy) played amazingly well. For Indian chess, it is important that we have good results in both men (open) and women." Having played the FIDE World Cup twice, World Champion Gukesh will aim to win the whole thing when he takes part in the tournament, slated to take place later in the year in India. 'For sure, I will take part in the World Cup. I am really excited and looking forward to it. In chess, we do not have many knockout events, so the World Cup is the biggest knockout tournament. After the Olympiad (in 2022), India hosting a big event is important for Indian chess,' added Gukesh, who will be gunning for his maiden WC trophy. Given Divya has already bagged the prize, India will complete a World Cup double should Gukesh or any other contender from India go on to win the competition.

New Delhi: As India's freestyle wrestling goes through a period of transition, Aman Sehrawat has single-handedly kept the flag flying. He was the only Indian wrestler to return with a medal from the Paris Olympics. The 22-year-old will again carry the nation's hopes in the men's section at the upcoming World Championships in Zagreb in September. On Monday, Aman sailed through the selection trials in Lucknow, securing the berth in the 57kg category, defeating Sumit and Rahul by technical superiority. Another prominent name in the 10-member men's freestyle team is World Championships and Asian Games medallist Deepak Punia, who will compete in the 92kg class. The promising Sujeet Kalkal won the trials in the 65kg category. This will be Sehrawat's maiden appearance at the World Championships but he welcomes the pressure, saying it keeps him motivated. 'The admiration and support I receive give me the energy to perform on the mat, so I'm fine with the pressure. As an Olympic medallist, I understand that people expect me to return with a medal from the World Championships, and I will give my best shot for gold,' Sehrawat told HT. 'I have worked hard on my defence during training stints in Japan and Russia. I got to spar with some strong international wrestlers, which really helped. My leg defence has been a weak area, and I've worked extremely hard to improve it. The worlds will be a good test,' he said. It has been a tough season for Sehrawat. He struggled with injury and took time to return to the mat. 'There was a problem with my knee at the start of the year, so I didn't compete in the trials for the Asian Championships. I wanted to be fully fit before making a comeback. It was important to get some practice before the worlds, so I competed in the Ulaanbaatar Ranking Series.' Sehrawat won bronze at that tournament and was happy with his progress. 'I was competing after almost a year. It was an opportunity to get back on the mat and test my fitness, so I was satisfied with the result.' 'I've been working on my fitness, and today I felt good on the mat. In the 57kg, there are some strong wrestlers — Olympic gold medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan and silver medallist Spencer Lee from the USA. I'll have to see who all are competing at the worlds this time, but I feel I have a good chance,' said Sehrawat, who trains at Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium. Citing "uncertainty" over ISL's future, Bengaluru FC "indefinitely" suspends salaries of players
New Delhi [India], August 5 (ANI): Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Bengaluru FC released a statement to confirm that they have suspended the salaries of players and staff members due to the "uncertainty" surrounding the future of the tournament. HT Image The ISL, which is usually held from September to April, has been put on hold due to ongoing differences between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the board's partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL). While taking the current situation into account, Bengaluru FC have "indefinitely" suspended the salaries. The 2018-19 ISL title winners claimed that they were left with no choice but to take such an action due to the lack of clarity regarding India's top-tier football league's future. "In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of players and staff belonging to the First Team. Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one that we have put everything aside and made, season after season," BFC said in a statement. Amid the ongoing issue, AIFF on Monday announced that a meeting has been scheduled with CEOs from eight Indian Super League (ISL) clubs for Thursday in the national capital to discuss the matter with the nation's top-tier football tournament. "However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff, and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution," the statement added. The current decision has resulted in the salaries of captain Sunil Chhetri, other players and staff members being suspended. However, the club confirmed that the youth teams will remain unaffected by this decision. Bengaluru FC urged the AIFF and FSFL to take a prompt decision and end the impasse quickly. "The Club remains committed to growing and developing the sport and our operations with our youth teams - men and women - and BFC Soccer Schools remain unaffected by this decision. We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the statement concluded. (ANI)
