Lionel Messi Returns From Injury, Scores Inter Miami's Game-Winner vs. MLS Champs
After missing Inter Miami's last two games with a leg muscle injury, Lionel Messi returned to MLS action on Saturday night, coming off the Herons' substitutes' bench at halftime and scoring the match-winning goal with six minutes to play and adding an assist in an eventual 3-1 victory over the LA Galaxy. With his team leading the defending MLS Cup champions 1-0 at the interval on a Jordi Alba strike, Miami coach Javier Mascherano inserted Messi for Venezuelan winger Telasco Segovia. It took the Argentine World Cup winner time to settle into the contest. Joseph Paintsil then equalized for the visitors just before the hour mark. But sure enough, the GOAT gave his legion of pink-clad worshipers pink-clad at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale the special moment they hoped to see when news broke about an hour before kickoff that Messi was listed as an available sub. Messi delivered it in brilliant individual fashion. On the right side of the field near the Galaxy' penalty box, Luis Suarez sent a backwards pass to Rodrigo De Paul, who squared the ball to Messi standing about 40 yards from the visitors' goal. The 38-year-old suddenly exploded past a defender then slalomed around several more before blasting an unstoppable left-footed shot into the bottom corner of keeper Novak Micovic's net. It was Messi's MLS-leading 19th goal of the regular season, putting him one ahead of Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge. (Nashville visits NYCFC on Sunday.) Suarez added an insurance tally for the hosts in second-half stoppage time off a seeing-eye feed from his former Barcelona running mate: Saturday's result pulled Miami, which claimed the Supporters Shield in 2024, within five points of Eastern Conference pacesetter Philadelphia Union, who lost to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. However, Messi & friends have played three fewer games. Messi was injured early in an Aug. 2 Leagues Cup contest against Mexican club Necaxa. He missed the Herons' final group game win over Pumas and a 4-1 Aug. 10 loss to Florida rival Orlando City. Miami faces Liga MX power Tigres on Wednesday in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals (coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app). Marlins stun Red Sox with three runs in ninth to avoid sweep at Fenway Park
Dane Myers and Jakob Marsee homered in Miami's three-run ninth inning and the Marlins beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 on Sunday to end a three-game losing streak. Myers hit the second pitch from Greg Weissert (4-4) into Boston's bullpen to tie it, and Marsee sent a pitch from Steven Matz into the seats in right. Tyler Phillips (2-1) worked a scoreless inning, and Anthony Bender got the final three outs for his fourth save. Eric Wagaman also homered for the Marlins. Boston's Wilyer Abreu had a two-run homer that popped out of the glove of right fielder Myers when he crashed into the fence. The Red Sox wasted a solid start by ace Garrett Crochet. Crochet rebounded from his worst start of the season, giving up three hits, with eight strikeouts and a walk one over seven innings. He was tagged for five runs in four innings in a loss Monday at Houston. Miami's Joey Wiemer struck out swinging three times in his major league debut. Myers went back on Abreu's fly, turned and looked like he was ready to make a nice over-the-shoulder grab, but it popped out and over. Crochet is four away from his second straight season reaching 200 strikeouts. Marlins: RHP Eury Pérez (5-3, 3.58 ERA) was set to face St. Louis at home Monday night. LHP Matthew Liberatore (6-10, 4-08) was slated to start for the Cardinals. Red Sox: RHP Dustin May (7-8, 4.67) was scheduled to start the opener of a two-game home series against Baltimore on Monday night. LHP Trevor Rogers (5-2, 1.43) was set to pitch for the Orioles..

Five biggest takeaways from what Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said on Sunday
Notre Dame football's fall practice's have officially made a shift on Sunday, as camp ended and now the season preparation fully begin and head coach Marcus Freeman got a chance to speak on what the Irish have accomplished during the past three weeks. There was plenty of new developments regarding some competitions, a few freshman and transfers who have stood out, along with a very funny moment from Freeman after a slip up. Find out below my biggest five takeaways from what Notre Dame football's leader said on Sunday, as the Irish start to prepare for the season opener against Miami. The offensive line's open spot Four of the five spots are locked up, as Anthonie Knapp (LT), Billy Schrauth (LG), Ashton Craig (C), and Aamil Wagner (RT) are set to be starters. Clearly the only spot left to fill is right guard, as Freeman mentioned that Sullivan Absher, Guerby Lambert and Will Black are competing for the job. Black is the least likely to win the competition, and a decision on this spot will come very soon. A quarterback hasn't emerged yet… While the offensive line battle is an important one, it's the quarterback race that everyone is keeping tabs on. Freeman answered multiple questions on CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, but at this point, he has not made up his mind who will start against Miami. They'll break down the film from today's scrimmage, but one thing Freeman does know, this competition has brought out the best of both of them. He noted that they're 'really good players' who are very coachable, and do extra work outside the allotted team time. Freeman said it was a bonus that they got reps with both the 1st and 2nd teams, trying to create some cohesion with those groups. Freeman might have made a recruiting violation In a very funny interaction about eight minutes into Freeman talking, he misspoke and said Noah Grubb's name, the Irish's 2026 quarterback commitment, instead of Noah Burnette. He immediately caught himself, then wondered out-loud if it was a violation. While I doubt it is, because he just slipped up and said the wrong name, it was still a funny interaction. Multiple wide receivers emerging The wide receiver top-4 is set, with Malachi Fields, Jaden Greathouse, Will Pauling and Jordan Faison all looking like the top options, but some players below them are starting to emerge as well. While Freeman was asked about Micah Gilbert and Elijah Burress, he brought up KK Smith and Logan Saldate as two others who have impressed in camp. It's been a very long time since the Irish have had such a deep wide receiver rotation, and they should put up some numbers this season. New faces that have stood out It's always great to hear about the young players standing out, but in the transfer portal era, that has changed the conversation. With so many players moving, there are plenty of fresh faces each season, and Notre Dame has more of a few of them starting off by making noise. Freeman singled out the freshman corners in Dallas Golden, Mark Zackery IV and Cree Thomas, which shows how deep this secondary is. He also mentioned tight end Ty Washington, who transferred in from Arkansas. We could see plenty of these four on the field this fall for the Irish.
