Kelantan sees over threefold rise in HFMD cases
KOTA BARU: Kelantan has recorded a sharp rise in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, with 8,801 infections reported as of the 19th Epidemiological Week this year, compared to 2,348 cases during the same period last year.
State Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the figure marks more than a threefold increase and reflects a similar trend to that seen in 2022.
"Of the total, 12 outbreaks remain active, namely four in Pasir Puteh, four in Kuala Krai and one each in Pasir Mas, Machang, Gua Musang and Kota Baru.
"All districts recorded an increase in cases, with Kota Baru topping the list at 3,060 cases, while other districts reported between 400 and 850 cases," he said on Friday (May 16).
Dr Zaini said that the weekly trend remains high, with an average of 895 cases reported each week.
He added that most cases involve children aged six and below, with mild symptoms such as fever and rashes on the hands, feet, mouth and tongue.
"The department advises parents and guardians to practise preventive measures such as washing hands before meals and after using the toilet, and to regularly clean toys, bathrooms and frequently touched items.
"Childcare centre operators are also encouraged to conduct health screenings at the entrance, carry out regular sanitisation, and avoid sharing personal items among children," he said. - Bernama

Since 1994, Tan has been the first sign language interpreter at the Federal Court of Malaysia, while her involvement in broadcasting began around 1985, through the program Selamat Pagi Malaysia on RTM, and later also became a sign language interpreter for RTM news broadcasts and official communication videos.

Temporary closure of major roads in Penang for 2025 Pantai Marathon on June 22
GEORGE TOWN — Several major roads here and Bayan Lepas will be temporarily closed from midnight to 9am on June 22 to facilitate the Pantai Marathon 2025 event. The Penang Pantai Hospital in a statement today said the affected roads include the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Bayan Lepas Expressway Viaduct, Batu Maung Expressway Viaduct, and Persiaran Bayan Indah. The road closures are intended to ensure the safety of participants and facilitate smooth traffic management throughout the event, the statement added. 'Motorists coming from George Town and the Penang Bridge heading to Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru, Bukit Jambul, or Jalan Tun Dr Awang can use Persiaran Bayan Indah – Jalan Aziz Ibrahim as an alternative route, while those from Bukit Jambul heading to George Town are advised to use the route via Sungai Nibong. 'The Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge will remain open throughout the event, with only one lane closed at the Batu Maung area to ease traffic flow. 'The lower lanes of the Bayan Lepas Expressway will be fully open to the public,' the statement said. The statement added that road users are advised to plan their journey and follow all signage and police instructions during the event. The Pantai Marathon is an event that promotes a healthy lifestyle. KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- ASEAN has charted a bold socio-cultural agenda to uplift the lives of over 680 million people across the region by 2045, aiming to forge a resilient, inclusive and people-centred community in the face of growing global uncertainties. The plan builds on the foundation laid by the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Blueprint 2025 and responds to emerging challenges such as ageing populations, digital exclusion, public health threats, climate change and widening social inequality. 'It also recognises the opportunities arising form emerging megatrends such as digital technology advancement and green and blue economies,' according to the ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future document. Among the key goals of the ASCC plan is to build a people-centred and interconnected community through equitable digital access, greater regional mobility, and enhanced cooperation in education, lifelong learning and social protection. The strategy also envisions a caring and inclusive ASEAN that promotes shared prosperity by investing in gender equality, women's empowerment, and stronger protections for migrant workers, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. Human security and resilience feature prominently, with ASEAN pledging to address mental health, ageing, and natural disasters through partnerships between governments, civil society and the private sector.
