MMEA foils attempt to smuggle exotic birds worth RM100,000
BATU PAHAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 1,300 exotic birds, believed to be run by two local men, early yesterday. Batu Pahat Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the birds, estimated to be worth RM100,000, were found on a fibre boat intercepted by a patrol vessel at about 1am. "Checks on the boat uncovered 114 baskets containing murai batu (white-rumped shama) and murai kampung (oriental magpie robin). "The two men, aged 26 and 27, failed to produce documents permitting the export of wildlife. "Both suspects were taken to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone for further investigation. The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010," he said in a statement last night. Zaini said the success was the result of intelligence gathered on smuggling activities in the waters off Tanjung Laboh, believed to be a key transit point for wildlife trafficking syndicates. He said the smuggling attempt was likely driven by strong market demand, with syndicates often using small boats at night to avoid detection.

Labourer sentenced to 15 years' jail, 12 strokes of the cane for raping stepdaughter
KOTA KINABALU: A labourer was sentenced to 15 years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane for raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter several times over these past five months. The 44-year-old Indonesian was handed the sentence after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting the girl four times between January and May this year, before Sandakan Sessions Court judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal on Thursday (May 29). The court heard that the man had committed the offences under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code and Section 16(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 when they were both alone in their plantation quarters in Kinabatangan. The matter came to light when the girl's mother found out about the incident, and a police report was lodged at the Kinabatangan Police Station at 12.52am on May 20. The accused was nabbed just eight minutes later at 1am while the girl, who was just 10 years and 10-months of age, was sent to undergo a medical examination at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan. Judge Zaini set an imprisonment sentence of 12 years and 10 strokes of the rotan for one charge, and three years' jail with two strokes of the cane for the other, ordering the prison terms to run consecutively. The accused will be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation after completing his punishment.

TH Stresses Importance Of ID Wristbands To Aid Malaysian Pilgrims In Holy Land
From Nurliyana Farhah Ruslan MAKKAH, May 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysian hajj pilgrims for the 1446H/2025M season are reminded to wear their identification wristbands at all times while in the Holy Land to ensure their safety and facilitate swift assistance in case of emergencies. Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) Customer Service Manager, Zaini Rashid, said the measure has proven effective, citing several incidents where pilgrims who were separated from their groups were quickly reunited thanks to the swift actions of TH personnel who operate round the clock. 'In one instance, an 83-year-old female pilgrim was separated from her family at Gate 13 of the Nabawi Mosque in Madinah, but was located after a local individual contacted the TH control centre number displayed on her wristband. 'Although the control centre is based in Makkah, the information was promptly relayed to the TH team in Madinah, and within less than 40 minutes, the pilgrim was safely reunited with her family,' he told reporters here recently. In a separate incident, Zaini said a 53-year-old female pilgrim who fainted near Gate 339 was assisted after her companions contacted the number on her wristband. 'Although the call connected to the control centre in Makkah, our team quickly liaised with personnel in Madinah. Alhamdulillah, immediate assistance was provided, and the situation was resolved efficiently,' he said. Zaini stressed that the identification wristbands serve not only as documentation tools but also as a rapid means of identifying the pilgrim's identity and location when urgent help is needed. Meanwhile, he also said TH provides free wheelchair assistance to Malaysian hajj pilgrims in need, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard pilgrims' welfare and comfort.

KOTA BARU: Kelantan has recorded a sharp rise in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, with 8,801 infections reported as of the 19th Epidemiological Week this year, compared to 2,348 cases during the same period last year. State Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the figure marks more than a threefold increase and reflects a similar trend to that seen in 2022. "Of the total, 12 outbreaks remain active, namely four in Pasir Puteh, four in Kuala Krai and one each in Pasir Mas, Machang, Gua Musang and Kota Baru. "All districts recorded an increase in cases, with Kota Baru topping the list at 3,060 cases, while other districts reported between 400 and 850 cases," he said on Friday (May 16). Dr Zaini said that the weekly trend remains high, with an average of 895 cases reported each week. He added that most cases involve children aged six and below, with mild symptoms such as fever and rashes on the hands, feet, mouth and tongue. "The department advises parents and guardians to practise preventive measures such as washing hands before meals and after using the toilet, and to regularly clean toys, bathrooms and frequently touched items. "Childcare centre operators are also encouraged to conduct health screenings at the entrance, carry out regular sanitisation, and avoid sharing personal items among children," he said. - Bernama
