RM1 million to rebuild Sepulut Health Clinic

NABAWAN: The Sepulut Health Clinic will undergo a complete demolition and reconstruction project worth RM1 million, said Sabah Health Exco Datuk James Ratib. The new facility will be constructed on the existing site in Kampung Sepulut, with work expected to begin in Sept 2025 and complete by April 2026, pending procurement procedures.
Advertisement Since Sept 2020, the clinic has operated from temporary premises at Dewan Kampung Salarom Taka after the original building was declared unsafe due to land movement. Services have since been split between Salarom Taka and Dewan Kampung Sinsingon. James, who is also State Community Development and People's Welfare Minister, said a new 19-acre site in Kampung Sepulut has been approved for development. Plans for a new Type 5 Health Clinic and staff quarters have been submitted under the 13th Malaysia Plan, Rolling Plan 1. He urged residents to remain patient, saying the reconstruction would ultimately improve healthcare comfort and accessibility in the area. His remarks came in response to criticism from Barisan Nasional (BN) Pensiangan Division Information Chief Md Saidi Ahmad Adini, who claimed that both James and Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohd Yassin had failed to address the prolonged use of temporary facilities. Md Saidi alleged that despite the Federal Government allocating RM44 million to upgrade more than 100 rural clinics across Sabah, the Sepulut clinic had been ignored. He pointed out that the original clinic, built in the 1990s, was condemned by the Public Works Department due to land instability. Although a new site was identified and verified by the Department of Town and Regional Planning, no permanent structure has been built to date. 'Residents are left with no choice but to seek treatment at a temporary facility in Kampung Salarom Taka, some 11km from Sepulut town,' he said, adding that the condition of the temporary clinic poses safety risks to patients and healthcare workers. Md Saidi also alleged that Abdul Ghani is linked to a 129-hectare land application in Nabawan, suggesting political interests had taken precedence over public health. Doctor's report on Zara's death was comprehensive
KUALA LUMPUR: The doctor who treated Zara Qairina Mahathir prepared a comprehensive medical report following her death, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Responding to questions on whether doctors had found signs of abuse or bruising related to bullying upon hospital admission, he said the priority at the time was to save her life. "The doctor's priority (at that moment in the hospital) was to save her life. At that point, who knew about the bullying? No one. The priority was to save her life first. "Only now do we know there were elements of bullying. At that time, would we check for evidence of bullying or focus on saving her life? The doctor chose to save her life, that is a fact. "Once the cause of death was identified as severe brain injury that prevented oxygen from reaching the brain, the medical report documented everything. Everything was done and properly recorded, there was no problem," he said in his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan. He was asked by Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar) whether a full head-to-toe examination would have been conducted upon hospital admission and if there were any signs indicating abuse or bruising related to bullying. He added that the details would be clarified during the inquest. On Aug 3, Zara's mother Noraidah Lamatlodged a police report at the Sipitang police station regarding bruises she observed while washing Zara's body at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17. Zara was found unconscious on July 16, believed to have fallen from the third floor of a dormitory building. She was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE). Her grave was then exhumed for a post-mortem and an inquest. The Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu fixed 19 days for her inquest proceedings. Those hearing dates are Sept 3 and 4; Sept 8 to 12; Sept 17 to 19; and Sept 22 to 30.

Hydrogen sulfide leak at Kota Kinabalu shipyard leaves worker unconscious

Bhd., KKIP Sepanggar, at 8.49am today. Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue personnel from detected the gas inside a fish container and carried out decontamination and ventilation. Dr Sim: Sarawak's future Type 2 government health clinics should use local designs

Citing the new RM24-million Tabuan Jaya Health Clinic, which is expected to be completed in October 2025, Dr Sim noted that the facility was built using the Ministry of Health's standardised design — unlike the Petra Jaya Health Clinic, which was customised to better meet Sarawak's needs. 'This is the second outlet of Type 2 health clinic from the Ministry of Health in Sarawak. The first outlet for this type 2 health clinic was Petra Jaya Health Clinic. But Tabuan Jaya Health Clinic is very different from Petra Jaya Health Clinic, which was locally designed and built. 'Perhaps in 2025 (onwards), any future Type 2 government health clinic in Sarawak should be based on Petra Jaya Health Clinic rather than based on the Ministry of Health's pre-approved plan, as Petra Jaya Health Clinic is more suitable for Sarawak. 'The standard Type 2 health clinic design only provides 100 car parking bays, yet the clinic is expected to serve up to 1,000 patients daily alongside 148 staff,' he said. Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said the clinic will cater not only to residents of Tabuan Jaya, but also those in Samarahan up to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and the Stutong area. 'This project, under the Ministry of Health and part of the 10th Malaysia Plan (2010-2015) Rolling Plan 1, was awarded in December 2021 after three tender rounds. It was originally scheduled for completion in June 2024 but received an extension of time due to additional fire safety requirements,' he explained. He pointed out that once operational, Tabuan Jaya Health Clinic will be staffed by 148 personnel and 28 doctors, including a family medicine specialist and a dentist. On a related matter, Dr Sim also expressed hope that the federal government would allocate sufficient manpower to optimise the health facilities in Sarawak. Highlighting Sarawak's healthcare gaps, he noted that the state currently has 4,275 hospital beds but requires an additional 1,925. Likewise, he said there are 4,614 doctors, with a shortfall of 2,649. He also estimated that upgrading dilapidated hospitals and clinics in Sarawak would require RM17 billion.
