Egypt ranks 9th globally, 1st in Africa for FDI in 2024
Rania al-Mashat, Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development and International Cooperation, announced the launch of the World Investment Report issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The report monitors key trends in global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2024 and highlights Egypt's position among the most attractive countries for investments, driven by the Egyptian government's reforms.
In a statement to the Egyptian Cabinet, the Minister revealed that the report placed Egypt ninth globally and first in Africa among the most attractive countries for FDI during 2024, attracting $47 billion in investments.
The Minister clarified that this marks a significant leap for Egypt from its 32nd global ranking in 2023, which recorded $10 billion in FDI. This reflects the government's prioritization of empowering the private sector and attracting investments. She also noted the positive growth rate in the third quarter of the current fiscal year, which exceeded expectations.
Al-Mashat highlighted the report's positive focus on developments in Africa, particularly in Egypt. The report specifically spotlighted the Ras El Hekma deal as an innovative model comprising two components: direct investment and a debt-swap mechanism. She added that this model came at a crucial time and demonstrates the state's ability to utilize innovative tools to attract financing and investments, deploying them in line with its national priorities.
She also referred to the UNCTAD Secretary-General's address, which emphasized the importance of mobilizing financing for the private sector. In this context, Egypt hosted a major conference earlier this week on development finance and enhancing the private sector's role in achieving growth and creating job opportunities.
This conference also served as a genuine platform to embody the principle of cooperation between international financial institutions and national governments in supporting the investment and development agenda.
Within this framework, she affirmed that over the past five years, Egypt has successfully mobilized more than $15.6 billion for the private sector. She underscored that the relationship between trade, investment, and development is an integrated and interconnected one, and that promoting private and foreign investments is considered one of the primary means to achieve comprehensive and sustainable growth.

During the two calls, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, enforce a ceasefire, and make full use of available diplomatic channels to contain the rapidly deteriorating situation and avert a wider regional crisis. He stressed the importance of preventing the conflict from spreading and dragging the region into full-scale chaos with consequences no one would be immune to. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's stance on pursuing every diplomatic and political avenue to reach a sustainable agreement on Iran's nuclear program. Egypt hosts 10 million refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants from 62 nationalities
A ship and remains of illegal migrants - CC via pxfuel CAIRO – 20 June 2025: On World Refugee Day, commemorated annually on June 20, Egypt joins the international community in honoring the resilience of millions forced to flee their homes in search of safety and dignity. The day serves as a reminder of the global refugee crisis and a renewed call for solidarity with both displaced persons and the communities that host them. Egypt has long been a safe haven for individuals fleeing conflict, persecution, and hardship. Today, the country hosts more than 10 million refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants from 62 different nationalities. In 2024, Egypt ranked second globally in the number of asylum applications submitted. Egypt's approach to refugee protection is rooted in respect for human dignity. It guarantees refugees and asylum seekers freedom of movement, access to basic services, and opportunities for integration—on par with Egyptian citizens. This inclusive policy reflects Egypt's continued commitment to its international obligations and humanitarian principles. Against a backdrop of worsening global crises and military escalations—particularly in the Middle East—Egypt emphasizes that international cooperation remains the only viable path to effectively and sustainably address refugee challenges. The growing scale and complexity of displacement underscore the need for equitable burden and responsibility sharing. In December 2024, Egypt became the first country in North Africa to adopt a dedicated legal framework on asylum by enacting the Foreign Asylum Law. On this occasion, Egypt reiterates the urgent need to mobilize international resources to support host countries in maintaining and enhancing the services provided to both refugees and their host communities. Furthermore, Egypt stresses the importance of a comprehensive approach to refugee issues—one that integrates humanitarian response with long-term development strategies to bolster the resilience of host communities. This must be accompanied by efforts to address the root causes of displacement through peace-building and conflict resolution initiatives, helping to create the conditions necessary for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of refugees. Egypt reaffirms its commitment to continued cooperation with international organizations, especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and to advancing its efforts at regional and international levels in support of peace, development, and the protection of displaced populations.
