
The Other Side of the Story is Waiting to Be Told
Today we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. Japan lost 3.1 million compatriots in the Pacific War, which at the time was known as the "Greater East Asia War."
On land, sea, and air, Japanese soldiers and sailors fought hard to protect their ancestral homeland and their families. But in the end they met defeat. We want the story of this unprecedented major conflict to be passed on as we console and honor the war dead. That is our duty as descendants. Yet the attitude we adopt and content of the stories we pass on have become points of contention.
I feel like it would be unbearable to continue living. Please forgive me.
Even now, the noble figures of the young tokotai ( kamikaze ) pilots loom before my eyes through the tears. Your heroic faces, covered in blood, press forward. I can see the pitiful expressions of those who perished in the war floating there before me. The voiceless cries of voiceless people reach my ears. Painful images of our compatriot soldiers, separated from us on far-flung foreign shores, pierce my breast like a needle.
We will never defile your precious blood.
These are excerpts from an editorial published in The Sankei Shimbun two days after the end of the war. It was entitled "Apologies to the War Dead." The person who wrote that editorial was undoubtedly expressing pent-up feelings and addressing in writing "individual people" whose existence were very real to him. The Allied firebombing of Tokyo on the night of March 9-10, 1945, caused at least 100,000 mostly civilian deaths.
As the end of the war approached, reports on the war and editorials flooded the Japanese media. But there was an enormous difference in impact compared to those that appeared immediately after the war. Now that it has been eight decades since the end of the war, it will take considerable effort to pass on the story of how things really were.
Moreover, there are serious problems that need to be addressed.
Many reports condemn Japan's war as an act of aggression. They barely mention historical facts that could lead to a different perspective.
For example, the October 1943 mobilization of students is reported as a tragedy. However, postwar Japan turned a blind eye to the historical significance of the Greater East Asia Conference (Dai Toa Kaigi), the world's first summit of people of color held in Tokyo the following month. Despite that Japan was on the brink of defeat, heads of state, prime ministers, and members of the royal families of seven Asian countries, including (as an observer) the head of state of the Provisional Government of Free India, gathered in Japan's capital. Anyone claiming that the participants were forced by Japan to attend does not comprehend the prevalent racism and resentment felt by Asian people at the time against Western colonial rule.
The Atlantic Charter signed two years earlier by the United States and Great Britain endorsed the right of people to choose their own desired form of government. But then-British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's position was that this right only applied to Europe and did not apply to European colonies in Asia and Africa.
The greatest influence that modern Japan has had on the world is found in its contribution to racial equality.
Japan's triumph in the Russo-Japanese War was the first instance in modern history in which a nation of non-Caucasians defeated a "White country." It gave encouragement to diverse peoples of color in Asia and Africa. And it stimulated the independence and modernization movements in their homelands.
At the Paris Peace Conference after World War I, during the drafting of the League of Nations Covenant, Japan proposed inclusion of a clause on the elimination of racial discrimination.
This world's first proposal for racial equality failed due to opposition from Western countries. But this protest by a non-Caucasian nation was still a major historical event.
That background explains why Japan went to war under a banner calling for Asian liberation and racial equality.
Here I would like to repeat a story I already wrote about three years ago in this news column.
In 1955, Japan was invited to the first Asian-African Conference (Bandung Conference) held in Indonesia. Japan's delegation was warmly welcomed by the delegations from other countries. The Japanese in attendance heard comments like the following: "It (our independence) is thanks to Japan." Others commented that, "Today's Asia exists because Japan made great sacrifices and fought bravely for the peoples of Asia."
This is according to the testimony of former United Nations Ambassador Toshikazu Kase. He served as Japan's acting representative at the conference.
It is significant that representatives from newly independent countries spoke about the war Japan had fought just 10 years before in the context of its contribution to their own independence.
However,, the story of Japan's struggle for racial equality has not been valued in postwar Japan. There have, however, been many reports of Japan's cruelty and recklessness.
If we continue to view the war dead as only unfortunate victims or condemn them as invaders, our prayers will not reach their spirits.
There is no doubt that war by its very nature is a tragedy that produces many victims. Nevertheless, there are many different meanings to the path a country takes, including regarding war. We must break away from the one-sided condemnation of Japan that continues out of inertia. Instead, we must make a conscious effort to learn in a balanced fashion about the path our predecessors followed.
In 2025, we also mark the 130th anniversary of Japan's victory in the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95. It is also the 120th anniversary of victory in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. We should carefully consider the significance of those conflicts in Japan's modern history. Japan today finds itself in a very harsh security environment. Strengthening defense capabilities alone is not enough to enhance deterrence and protect peace. It is also essential that the public and Self-Defense Force personnel learn about the efforts of their predecessors and develop the spirit to emulate them.
We are living in an age where peace cannot be maintained with the kind of "postwar pacifism" that rejects a willingness to fight even when fighting becomes necessary.
No sitting prime minister has visited Yasukuni Shrine since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did so in December 2013. The country needs to see Japan's Prime Minister and Cabinet members bow before the war dead.
They cannot allow themselves to be intimidated by interfering foreign nations or unfair accusations from leftist elements. After all, worship at Yasukuni represents fulfillment of a solemn pact made by the nation of Japan with the spirits of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of their country.

'Our schools must not honour racist individuals,' Oikawa wrote. After four years and no changes, Oikawa decided to renew her demand in the last week. 'I don't think it's appropriate in 2025 to say, 'Oh it's in the past. Most people don't know about it,' ' she told Postmedia. 'No, we shouldn't ignore it. This was a horrible injustice.' Senator Reid Elementary, which opened in 1961 in the Cedar Hills area of Surrey, was named after Thomas Reid, who had a long political history in Surrey and B.C. After serving as city councillor in 1922, Reid became a federal Liberal MP for the New Westminster riding in 1930. He served in the Senate from 1949 until 1967. They do not belong here, and here, and there is only one solution to the problem. They cannot be assimilated as Canadians for no matter how long the Japanese remain in Canada they will always be Japanese.' Oikawa said she first learned of the school's name honouring Reid when she was president of the Metro Vancouver chapter of National Association of Japanese Canadians. It's a place that should be inclusive, safe for children to learn the history, the good and bad, to be better prepared so they don't make the same mistakes,' said Oikawa, a fourth-generation Canadian. In addition to calling on the school district to rename Senator Reid Elementary in 2021, Oikawa wrote to city council that year to rename Senator Reid Park in Newton. The school board only acknowledged receiving the letter, and the city never responded, she said. Oikawa's own family, which has a long history in Canada, was subjected to racism long before 1942, she said. Her father's side of the family came to B.C. in 1906, while her mother's side came in the late 1800s. But in 1942, they were treated as enemies, Oikawa said, and detained in Hastings Park in Vancouver. At the time, there were heightened fears of Japan invading, but there was no evidence to suggest Japanese Canadians presented any risk. 'It's really heartbreaking to know there's a school named after an MP who helped initiate this injustice and kept perpetuating the lies even as a senator in the 1960s.' Surrey trustees were not made available for comment, but the district said the matter will be discussed by officials when the new school year begins. The City of Surrey did not respond to requests for comment. Schools in B.C. named after individuals with controversial pasts have been renamed before. The school had been named after Alan Webster Neill, who as an MLA and MP supported residential schools, anti-Chinese laws in the B.C. legislature and the incarceration of Japanese Canadians. Oikawa said this inspired her to try the same change at Senator Reid Elementary. 'I saw how beautiful it was that they had this name-changing ceremony and how powerful it was,' she said. Federal judge blocks parts of Mississippi ban on DEI in public schools
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A federal judge blocked portions of Mississippi's ban on diversity, equity and inclusion practices in public schools from being enforced while a lawsuit against it is underway. The provisions blocked by U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate on Monday seek to prohibit public schools from discussing a list of 'divisive concepts' related to race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation and national origin. They would also prevent public schools from maintaining programs, courses or offices that promote DEI or endorse 'divisive concepts' and ban diversity training requirements. The law, which took effect in April, aims to prevent public schools from 'engaging in discriminatory practices' by banning DEI offices, trainings and programs. Any school in violation of the act could lose state funding. A group of teachers, parents and students is suing the state, alleging the law violates their First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. Wingate's ruling follows a temporary restraining order he granted to the plaintiffs in July. At an Aug. 5 hearing, lawyers representing the plaintiffs argued that the law is too confusing, leaving parents, teachers and students wondering what they can and cannot say and whether they could face consequences as a result of their speech. Cliff Johnson, a professor at the University of Mississippi Law School and Mississippi director of the MacArthur Justice Center, testified that he and his students often discuss what could be considered 'divisive topics.' In an exchange with Wingate, Johnson said he did not believe the law would allow him to teach about the First, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments; the court case that paved the way for the internment of Japanese citizens during WWII; portions of the Civil Rights Act; or the murders of Emmett Till and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. 'I think I'm in a very difficult position. I can teach my class as usual and run the serious risk of being disciplined, or I could abandon something that's very important to me,' Johnson said. 'I feel a bit paralyzed.' The Mississippi Attorney General's Office argued that public employees do not have First Amendment rights. 'They are speaking for the government and the government has every right to tell them what they need to say on its behalf,' said Lisa Reppeto, an attorney at the state attorney general's office. She added that the First Amendment does not give students the right to dictate what their school does or does not say. Reppeto also said the consequences of the law are aimed at the schools — not students or teachers — and that the plaintiffs' 'argument is not consistent with what is in the statute.'

The country's housing emergency is so powerful, distorted and puzzling that many are prone to say, 'You couldn't make this up.' But some B.C. fiction writers are doing just that. They are bringing housing narratives to life in imaginary forms. They're creating other worlds to bring home some disturbing aspects of the crisis, which see prices in Vancouver, Victoria and Toronto among the most unaffordable in the world. They are doing so through the genres of crime, humour, satire, gothic horror, prophecy, futurism and utopianism. Following is a look at four authors and their titles. Article content Property Values Vancouver comedian Charles Demers got the fictional ball rolling some years ago, with Property Values (Arsenal Pulp Press). It's a fun and lively Metro Vancouver real-estate crime drama, teeming with ethnically diverse gangs and a young, hapless man fixated on hanging on to his family home. To avoid his former father-in-law selling his childhood Coquitlam house, the protagonist convinces a group of friends to stage a drive-by shooting in his suburban cul-de-sac. He figures that will lower the house's value and he will be able to stay in it. The illicit theatrics end up putting him at the centre of a nasty gang war. Psychological truths emerge about the meaning of home. As far back as 2009, Demers, a stand-up comic and fourth-generation Vancouver resident, also wrote a series of witty, probing essays titled Vancouver Special. With his social-justice bent, they expose both the marvels and grit of Metro Vancouver. That was before the region's real-estate market went really crazy. Article content Broadway Corridor: The Great Social Divide West Vancouver's John D'Eathe, who before he retired had his hand in constructing $5 billion worth of residential towers and condo complexes in East Asia and Canada, has come out with his second work of fiction about a voracious housing industry. In his first novel, Laundering the Dragon: Black Renminbi (Adagio Media), D'Eathe used crime fiction to explore dubious behaviour at the highest echelons of transnational housing construction. The book revolves around a plot in which the renminbi, the currency of China, 'is slowly weaving its way into control of the Western world' through unchecked money laundering. Broadway Corridor is in part also about offshore capital pouring into Canadian real estate. But it's also a look at social conflict between haves and have-nots, with unaffordability at its core. Article content Infused with romance, drama and action, it's a future-oriented fantasy about what could become of Vancouver's Broadway corridor. That's the 500 square blocks surrounding new SkyTrain Stations that city councillors, in real life, have been upzoning for hundreds of new residential towers and office blocks. In D'Eathe's work of fiction, the Broadway corridor becomes 'internationally renowned for its superb rail transit and nodes of spectacular view towers, attracting the wealthy of the world. But the Great Social Divide continues to alienate Canadians, locating those struggling financially elsewhere in less desirable areas.' Jack in Pemberland This sly novel imagines a fictional utopia of 100,000 souls somewhere in B.C., where housing costs little. Article content It's written by Herschel Hardin, a long-time B.C. journalist, author, environmentalist, economist and commentator who ran as an NDP candidate, wrote a history of Vancity Credit Union and served on the boards of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. He's having serious fun here. 'Jack in Pemberland (FriesenPress) is the extraordinary story of the hidden city of 100,000 people in the Cayoosh Range in British Columbia,' says the dust jacket, which flirts with giving away the plot surprise at the book's end, which centres on the global movement of people and developers' fixation on growth. 'Follow Jack as he gets to know what makes the city tick. Discover how Pemberland provides housing at so low a cost that nobody has to even think about it. … You'll likely end up wanting to move to Pemberland, but other than a modest number of refugees, only a few people are allowed in every year. Article content Ultraviolet Night When he was at Global TV, journalist Jesse Ramon Ferreras often produced pieces about the region's housing crisis and its causes. Now, in his new turn, Ferreras takes on the real-estate beast in the genre of gothic fiction, which blends romance, horror and the supernatural. Ferreras's short story, titled Ultraviolet Night, is part of a brand new collection, Not As It Seems: A Gothic Anthology (And You Press), edited by Courtney Umphress. Full of twists and turns, Ultraviolet Night is about a vampire who awakens to a decaying city. 'He has existed for a century, but when he awakens in the present day, he sees more people packing the streets than he ever has before. Born in the late 19th century, in life he was a beneficiary of the wealth that colonists built in Canada, and in death he has established himself as the apex predator on the streets,' Ferreras says. Article content When the vampire attacks his victim, seeking blood, he realizes a larger, more dangerous supernatural force than he has taken over the city. 'It has a close connection to luxury glass towers that have been built all over the city, rising as affordability has crushed the hopes and the souls of the people who live there. To remain the apex predator, he must find what's killing people before he can reach them.'
