Professor Brian Cox ‘excited' to receive Francis Crick Institute scholarship

BBC science presenter Professor Brian Cox has said he is 'excited' after receiving a scholarship from the Francis Crick Institute. As part of the scholarship, the 57-year-old will present a new podcast called A Question Of Science, produced by BBC Studios and recorded at the London biomedical research centre. Cox said: 'Science doesn't happen in isolation. The way we fund it, regulate it, and apply it, all depend on reaching across boundaries. 'I'm excited to bring a different perspective to the Crick and its science, and I'm personally fascinated by the convergence of physics with the questions being asked by biologists at one of the best research institutions in the world. 'The podcast A Question Of Science, has already shown that the real experts have much to say about issues that affect all of us and that scientists can even be entertaining.' His role will also see him promoting, explaining and exploring multidisciplinary research and championing the role of science in the world. Paul Nurse, chief executive and director of the institute, said: 'We are very much looking forward to working with Brian, who will be a great addition to the Crick community. 'As scientists, it's important for us to remain outward facing. Brian has a natural ability to link the scientific community with wider society, pioneering new ways to engage the public and acting as an advocate for science and its potential to improve the lives of millions.' The new podcast will launch on September 17, with episodes looking at subjects such as climate change, cures for cancer and AI, and will run for 12 episodes. Cox is best known for BBC shows such as Brian Cox's Adventures In Space And Time, The Planets and Forces Of Nature. Before becoming a physicist, Cox was a keyboard player in dance band D:Ream, who are best known for their song Things Can Only Get Better.

Love Is Blind UK star in tears minutes into latest episode 'I don't want to be the villain'

One Love Is Blind UK couple haven't fully convinced their co-stars that they're ready to tie the knot. *Warning - This article contains minor spoilers for Love Is Blind UK season 2 episode 5.* ‌ Netflix has dropped episodes 5-8 of Love Is Blind UK season 2 today, with the participants gearing up to bid farewell to the idyllic shores of Cyprus and face the real world. The second phase of the Netflix romance experiment also witnesses the freshly-betrothed pairs revealing to their loved ones that they're tying the knot in mere weeks. ‌ While there's plenty of chaos throught the next few episodes, Love Is Blind audiences can brace themselves for tears within moments of episode 5 beginning. ‌ This follows Dumfries nanny and beauty expert Katisha and Kent-based health coach Javen confessing they've yet to exchange 'I love yous' when presenters Matt and Emma Willis grill the couples ahead of their UK homecoming. During the previous instalment, audiences witnessed a heated clash between Katisha and Wigan hopeful Kal, who challenged her choice to select Javen despite forming a strong bond with fellow participant Demola. In episode 5, prior to the couples attempting to live together for the first time, Surrey flight attendant Ashleigh takes Katisha to one side to chat about her current state of mind. She quizzes Katisha regarding her exchange with Kal and queries whether Demola continues to occupy her thoughts, reports the Daily Record. Katisha responds: "He's obviously trying to gauge where I'm at and 'Am I playing both of them?' or whatever it is, but at the end of the day, he's not been in the pods with me. ‌ "I feel like with Demola, yes of course we had a connection and we wouldn't have got as far as we did if we didn't," she continues. "And then I was like, it's not fair for me to say yes to someone that I'm not 100% sure about. "I felt very at peace with Javen, I felt like he was going at a speed I was comfortable with. ‌ "My whole life has been..." she begins, before breaking down in tears. "Sorry," she sobs as Ashleigh hugs her and says: "Don't cry! Don't worry." ‌ Watch Love is Blind UK on Netflix for free with Sky This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. It's more how I feel and how I need to feel I can be myself. "I just need to feel calm because everything in my life is so chaotic," she explains. ‌ When Ashleigh asks if Katisha is really ready to marry Javen, she insists that she is before asking: "Do you have doubts about us? Why do you ask?" "(The reason) I ask is the fact that you are marrying this man for the rest of your life," Ashleigh points out gently. Katisha then reflects: "I just feel like we're gonna be fine. I did not take the decision lightly; I truly didn't. I don't want to be a villain. I came in for myself; I came in for me." "You are no villain babe," Ashleigh reassures her, as the sun sets on their Cyprus holiday. Will Katisha and Javen manage to make it work long-term? Keep tuning in to discover what happens next.

Netflix Hostage star Julie Delpy's 'heartbreaking' admission about role in new thriller

Hostage promises to keep audiences glued to their seats Julie Delpy, one of the stars of Netflix 's forthcoming thriller Hostage, has given an insight into her role in the five-part series, reports the Manchester Evening News. ‌ The Hollywood actress portrays French President Vivienne Toussaint, a character who veers increasingly to the right in an attempt to placate her adversaries and maintain her grip on power in the brand-new series. ‌ Reflecting on the strains endured by actual politicians, the Before Sunset star confessed she would never venture into politics. ‌ At a recent London screening of Hostage, the 55 year old French-American star told media outlets including Reach Screen Time: "I guess there's a lot of pressure from outside, people who are pressuring [those] who believe in something." The accomplished actress, writer and director went on to say: "[Politicians] know a lot of stuff they want to do is influenced probably by big businesses. "In the US, it's definitely a lobbying system officially affecting politics, but I think for every president, things come into play that is more than what you as an individual would like to be, and I think the character of Toussaint has gone really far." Regarding politicians compromising their principles to hold onto power, Delpy remarked: "Also, I think if you have ethics as a human being and you become a powerful person, who has to do things that are against what they believe in, it must be heartbreaking sometimes. ‌ Get Netflix free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description "You always have to disassociate the human being that you are and the powerful person, who has to also comply to maybe people above you. "It's such big businesses in play right now, and presidents have to comply to others probably. I would cry all the time." ‌ She said she would "hate" to be the president in real-life, explaining: "It's like the pressure of making decisions, of doing the right thing or the wrong thing." She added: "It's very interesting as someone who makes big decisions, how much you think of it." ‌ Hostage centres on a fictional British Prime Minister (portrayed by Suranne Jones), whose allegiance to her country faces the ultimate challenge when her spouse is abducted and her resignation is demanded. Meanwhile, French leader Toussaint finds herself caught up in a blackmail controversy. The pair will unite in an attempt to confront their shared adversary with everything at stake, including their political futures. Viewers will be kept on the edge of their seats right until the final moments with plenty of shocking revelations and unexpected developments throughout.
