Kuala Lumpur must not be a city only for the rich, says Federal Territories Minister
She warned that failure to address this issue will worsen economic inequality and mobility, creating a city only for the rich and eroding the city's social character.
Dr Zaliha made these remarks in her opening speech at the groundbreaking ceremony of Residensi Aman Madani, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Bandar Sri Permaisuri on Wednesday (Aug 6).
Also present was Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the Prime Minister's wife.
'In the Federal Territories, we have targeted 80,000 affordable units by 2028. As of today, we have achieved 73,200 units — or 91.5% of the target — comprising completed homes, homes under construction, and those with approved development orders."
She noted that Kuala Lumpur, home to nearly two million people in just 240 square kilometres, now has a population density exceeding 8,100 people per square kilometre.
'Behind this rising number, however, lies a growing spatial gap between the city centre and its residents.
'This spatial inequality forces key city workers — public servants, technicians, nurses, small traders, and more — to live far from their workplaces, commuting two to three hours daily. This affects the cost of living, productivity, and ultimately, their family well-being.'
She added that as urban housing becomes increasingly unaffordable to middle- and lower-income groups, the city risks losing fair wealth distribution.
'Residensi Aman Madani is part of this initiative — offering 3,500 housing units, each 900 square feet. Despite a gross development value of RM1 billion, each unit is sold at only RM300,000 — made possible through strategic cooperation between the government, local authorities, and developers.
'This project is strategically located near hospitals, schools, and the upcoming MRT3 line. It will reduce commute times, giving families more quality time. Parents can send their children to nearby schools and return home earlier, without having to commute daily from Semenyih, Rawang, or Nilai.'
She emphasised that Kuala Lumpur should no longer be a city exclusive to the affluent.
'We envision a unifying city, not a divisive one. But even in our push for affordable housing, I've stressed to the Federal Territories Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) that all projects must meet quality standards, ensure access to utilities, healthcare, education, and include well-designed public spaces.'
Dr Zaliha said Residensi Aman Madani also incorporates hawker stalls for micro-entrepreneurs, rainwater harvesting systems, and solar panel installations — making it one of the most sustainable housing projects aligned with the ministry's 'CHASE City' vision.
CHASE City, which stands for Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe and Eco-Friendly, is an urban transformation plan under the Federal Territories Department launched earlier this year.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Sessions Court has sentenced an unlicensed futures trader to a total of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of RM9 million for unlicensed activities and derivatives fraud. The Securities Commission of Malaysia (SC), in a statement today, said that Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril meted out the sentences yesterday after Mohd Azhidi Laili pleaded guilty to nine charges under Section 206(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA). It said Mohd Azhidi was sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of RM1 million in default three months imprisonment for each charge, with the jail terms to run concurrently. "If Mohd Azhidi does not pay the fine, he will face a further imprisonment of 27 months after the completion of his jail term," read the statement. Mohd Azhidi, who had falsely represented himself as a futures trader, committed the offences between May 2013 and March 2014 in Kuala Lumpur. "According to the facts of the case as admitted by Mohd Azhidi, he had deceived nine victims of a total of RM1.45 million for a purported futures crude palm oil (FCPO) investment scheme under AmFutures Sdn Bhd, which did not exist," the commission said. The court also sentenced Mohd Azhidi to two years' imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 58(1) of the CMSA for holding himself out as a representative of AmFutures Sdn Bhd without being licensed or registered for dealing in derivatives, and ordered the jail term to be served concurrently. Mohd Azhidi was initially charged by the SC on Feb 14, 2022, two days after his arrest, and he claimed trial to all the charges and was released on bail of RM250,000 with two sureties. He was also ordered to surrender his passport and to report to the SC's Investigating Officer once a month. "The trial proceeded from February 2023 to March 2025, after which he decided to change his plea to guilty. 28 prosecution witnesses, including seven victims, testified in court," read the statement.

It's getting awkward as Awesome TV sues comedian trio over unpaid debts claim
IT gets messy after Awesome TV has responded to claims by three well-known comedians over unpaid appearance fees by suing them for defamation. In a media statement, the TV station claimed that monies owing to Amirullah Azmi who is better known as Amir Raja Lawak, Ikhtiarudin Naina Mohamad (Mamak Puteh) and Abu Musarrif Abu Bakar (Abu Mamu) were the responsibility of external production houses. To further compound matters, the issue was highlighted in the Dewan Rakyat by Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid who demanded greater protection for the creative industry. The DAP legislator argued that artistes were still being forced to plead for what should be rightfully theirs. On this note, Awesome TV has slammed the former Penang Island City councillor for making unverified remarks in the Parliament which cast the broadcaster in a bad light. Adding to the human drama, Amirullah is said to be seeking RM18,000 in overdue payments to fund his father's cancer treatment. Editor's Note: Awesome TV had previously been embroiled in negative publicity for its news reportage during the 15th General Election (GE15). Its reportage had come under fire as racist when it urged Malay voters to turn out at polls to avoid the Chinese from being kingmakers. It was not the only time Awesome TV has been in the firing line as its news reports also seemed designed to stoke racial tensions by highlighting economic disparity between ethnic communities. That the Awesome TV's retaliatory media statement which was shared on Facebook forum Meanwhile in Malaysia (MIM) has garnered 3.4K likes, 1.1K comments and 235 shares at the time of writing is an indication that this spat had captured the public's attention. One commenter queried why wasn't there a suit for defamation when the matter went viral a few months back. Why wait till it was highlighted in the Dewan Rakyat before taking legal action? The lack of details led to much conjecture with one commenter wondering if it was case of Awesome TV not paying the production houses who then failed to reimburse the artistes. The lack of clarity is also reflected in commenters' reactions. One insinuated the suit was a means to avoid paying the debt. However, other commenters took the view that the payments were NOT Awesome TV's problem. It was for the external production houses to settle those dues. Some suggested there was more than meets the eye. If indeed the payments were the purview of external production houses, why delay in declaring this piece of information? The delay in responding was also highlighted. Why the long delay? That this whole unsavoury episode has tarnished Awesome TV's reputation is undisputed, judging from some of the comments. Wouldn't it have been better to sit down and trash out the issue without involving lawyers and MPs? But then again, it probably got messy because a compromise or agreement could not be reached.
