Weekend rush and incessant rain add to pilgrims' woes in Tirupati

The incessant drizzle throughout the day and the heavy rush of pilgrims to Tirupati during the 'extended weekend' made life miserable for the pilgrims as well as the local residents. The Saturday and Sunday came in quick succession after Independence Day, making several take up unplanned visit to the temple city. Even as the Tirumala temple was bursting at its seams, the Tirupati railway station and the APSRTC central bus station offered no respite to the commuting public. The 'Srinivasam' and 'Vishnu Nivasam' pilgrim accommodation complexes, situated opposite the APSRTC complex and railway station respectively, virtually choked with vehicles with the inward and outward movement of pilgrims. The rain added to the chaos by creating slush pools and potholes, thus making the traffic turn further sluggish. The intermittent and irregular rainfall pattern also caught many passengers off guard. There was a heavy demand for seats in the private buses travelling towards Hyderabad and Bengaluru in view of the long weekend.

Women can save up to Rs 2,000 on free travel: MLA

Guntur: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has introduced the 'Stree Sakti' free bus travel scheme for the empowerment of women across the State, said MLA Galla Madhavi while launching the scheme at the NTR Bus Station in Guntur city on Friday. 'Poor women traveling between villages and towns earn around Rs 10,000 per month, but have to spend nearly Rs 2,000 just on travel expenses. With this scheme introduced by CM Naidu that burden is reduced, providing not only financial relief but also mental comfort. This is not just a transportation facility—it is the beginning of a social revolution,' she said. She explained that under the NDA government's initiative, women will be able to travel free of cost in five categories of APSRTC buses—Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Express, and Metro Express. She described the move as a historic decision. MLA Madhavi said this comes in addition to other welfare measures such as free LPG cylinders and the Talliki Vandanam scheme.

Naidu oversees readiness of Stree Shakti scheme implementation

Vijayawada: With heavy passenger footfall expected following the launch of Stree Shakti – the free bus travel scheme for women --chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu asked the officials of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) to make all arrangements ahead of the scheme's launch and to be prepared to mitigate any issues that may arise. Naidu held a review with officials on Tuesday to assess the scheme's preparedness and directed them to prepare a comprehensive plan for auto drivers by linking all existing state and central government schemes to minimize the impact on them. Naidu requested the officials to prepare a traffic management plan, scale up capacity according to demand, and prioritise passenger safety. He instructed that passengers be treated politely and asked the officials to collect feedback regularly to improve services. The chief minister further directed that all e-POS machines must be mandatorily enabled with GPS and real-time monitoring. Any issues, such as bus breakdowns, should be addressed immediately. He also emphasised maintaining the highest level of cleanliness in bus stations, along with providing all basic amenities such as RO drinking water, clean toilets, fans, and seating facilities. As additional bus services will be operated to meet increased demand, officials informed Naidu that measures have been taken to prevent breakdowns. Women will be able to travel across the state on Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Express, and Metro Express buses. The software in e-POS machines will be updated by Aug 14 to issue zero-fare tickets. Staff training for the same is complete. The chief minister will formally launch the Stree Shakti scheme on the afternoon of Aug 15 at Pandit Nehru Bus Station, Vijayawada.
