Where does Oregon vs. Washington rank among best rivalries in college football?

USA Today08-07-2025
The world of college football has changed dramatically over the last five seasons, but one thing that hasn't changed is the heated rivalry between the Oregon Ducks and the Washington Huskies.
Getting a victory over the Huskies, and vice versa, is perhaps the most satisfying win of the season for both fan bases. The hatred runs deep, and with the move to the Big Ten Conference, this particular rivalry might have surpassed the Civil War for the Ducks and the Apple Cup for the Huskies.
In their Top 100 list of rivalries in college football, The Athletic has this game as No. 21, falling just outside the Top 20. But for those who have been intimately involved with this rivalry between the Ducks and the Dawgs, the feelings alone make this Top 10 material.
Overall, the Huskies lead the series 63-45-5. Washington dominated the 1970s and 1980s, accounting for the disparity in the record, but the Ducks' success in the century is helping to make up some of that ground. Oregon won last year's game 49-21 to secure its perfect 12-0 regular season.
The two programs are joined at the hip in some ways, as they just can't stay away from each other. When it was obvious the Pac-12 was going to make a significant shift and narrowly disband, the Ducks and Huskies joined forces, for a brief second, to make the move to the Big Ten Conference and keep the rivalry going.
But once that move was complete, they could resume the rivalry. Both teams have experienced wins over one another in recent years, and both have had playoff wins. They've also had some coaching changes with a varying degree of success, but with Dan Lanning in Eugene and Jedd Fisch in Seattle, both programs seem to have found their guy for years to come.
Whether it will turn into a Rich Brooks vs. Don James rivalry on the sideline remains to be seen, but it would be a good page in this storied game to have two coaches go at it on the sidelines and in the recruiting world. It would also add to the history of the Big Ten, which is no stranger to watching two coaches at big-time programs go head-to-head for decades.

'Stunning' Oregon Cheerleader Is Very Ready For Football Season

'Stunning' Oregon Cheerleader Is Very Ready For Football Season originally appeared on The Spun. After winning the Big Ten Championship Game in their first season with the conference, the Oregon Ducks' title dream was cut short by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff quarter-finals. But the team is ready for next season and expectations are going to be high again. While the team prepares to defend their conference title and hopefully climb higher, the cheerleading team are going to be doing their part as well. Among the many Oregon cheerleaders getting ready for 2025 is Annie Finemel, who has attracted plenty of attention for her preparations and dedication to the game. Finemel is heading into her second year with the cheerleading team. According to her Instagram page, she is also a member of the Oregon Chi Omega Greek organization and SAG. Between her Instagram and TikTok accounts, she boasts several thousand followers. Her content ranges from videos with her friends to posts telling her life's story and showing what she's had going on this summer: Expectations for 2025 The Ducks obviously won't have the exactly same lineup of players who won them the conference title last year. The biggest loss by far is quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who left for the NFL, leaving Dante Moore as the new starter despite throwing less than 10 passes for the Ducks last season. Nine other starters from last season wound up getting drafted in April, leaving nearly half of the starting lineup in need of big changes from head coach Dan Lanning. There's a pretty clear path back to the Big Ten Championship Game, if not the College Football Playoff, for the Ducks. After a game against FCS powerhouse Montana State, Oregon will play Oklahoma State, Northwestern and their arch-rivals Oregon State before things really kick into gear. Arguably their toughest game of the season will be the September 27 tilt against Penn State at Beaver Stadium. That will be followed by a game against top-25 Indiana. Round out the final half of their schedule will be Rutgers, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, USC and Washington. Nearly every game on that schedule looks winnable in some form or other. It's entirely within the realm of possibility that Oregon's only loss of the season comes to Penn State. Will the Ducks repeat as Big Ten champions? Bo Nix leaves Cardinals defense stunned after joint practices

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is under a ton of pressure to improve upon last year's magic carpet ride of a season. The former Oregon Ducks star got off to a slow start in his rookie year, but threw 29 touchdowns to eight interceptions in the final 15 games of the season, while posting a 10-5 record. Now, Nix is widely expected to take a leap in year two and sounds like he's already getting a head start on it. The Broncos have been competing in joint practices this week with the Arizona Cardinals in preparation for their preseason game this weekend, and the main takeaway from Arizona's defense is how good Nix has looked. Veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell said that the second-year quarterback 'has what it takes,' before his teammate, linebacker Mack Wilson, talked about the sophomore leap Nix appears to have taken. Nix has a lot of expectations to fulfill after leading the Broncos to their first playoff berth in nearly a decade last year. If the reactions from Arizona's defense are any indication, he is ready for the challenge. After facing the Cardinals in a joint practice, Nix and most of Denver's starters will not play in Saturday's preseason game in Arizona, but they will be back in action for a preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints next week.
