Pain no barrier as Woakes readies to take crease at The Oval ICC World Test Championship

Woakes received some throwdowns at the indoor nets at The Oval on Sunday and got changed into his whites in anticipation of batting on the penultimate day as England reached 339/6 at stumps in pursuit of 374 runs for victory.
England teammate Joe Root, who scored his 39th Test century earlier in the day to put the side within sight of victory , revealed Woakes was going to do everything he could to help his side prevail.
"He's all-in, like the rest of us," Root said of Woakes.
"It's been that kind of series, where guys have had to put bodies on the line. Hopefully, it doesn't get to that. But he had some throwdowns in here at one point, and he's ready if needed. He's desperate to do what it takes."
England are yet to reveal the full extent of Woakes' injury, though Root said the 36-year-old was still experiencing some pain.
"Clearly, he's in a huge amount of pain having done what he's done," Root said.
"It just shows, as we've seen from other guys in this series - (Rishabh) Pant batting with a broken foot, guys taking all sorts of blows here and there, but it means a huge amount to him.
"It just shows the character and the person that he's willing to put his body on the line like that for England, and hopefully - well, hopefully he doesn't have to, but if it does come to that - get us across the line and win us an incredible series."

With just 35 runs required for victory on Monday, Root believes his team is well placed to sneak across the line and claim the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
"I'd like think we have got what we need to get across the line tomorrow," Root said.
"It's been one hell of a series, one hell of a journey and the confidence in our dressing room, clearly we feel we have got the players to get us across the line. But it's just been one of those sort of five matches in six weeks where it's swung both ways the whole time. And we are in for a great day tomorrow."

Siraj leads India to stunning win over England

Mohammed Siraj was inspired as India took the last four wickets in under an hour to bowl England out for 367 and win an astonishing final Test by six runs to draw the series on Monday. Siraj was India's hero, dismissing Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton before bowling Gus Atkinson to complete a five-wicket-haul. After Prasidh Krishna had bowled Josh Tongue for nought, Chris Woakes walked out to bat wearing a sling to protect his dislocated shoulder with 17 runs still needed. Atkinson hit Siraj for six to give England brief hope and cleverly protected Woakes from the strike, but Siraj produced another brilliant yorker to earn India their narrowest-ever Test win. "With 60, 70-odd runs to win with seven wickets in hand you don't get to see many games like this," India captain Shubman Gill said. "Very happy to get this over the line, a little bit of luck for us." England, 301-3 at one stage, lost their last seven wickets for 66 runs, a collapse prompted by Harry Brook's reckless dismissal after he had made a superb century. India suddenly had a chink of hope and they took full advantage, removing Jacob Bethell and Joe Root (105) before bad light and rain ended the fourth day early. England still needed 35 runs to complete their second-highest Test run chase and by far the largest for any team on this ground. The Oval was full for the final act of a series that fluctuated wildly over seven weeks and under grey skies in an atmosphere of unremitting tension as one of the most dramatic endings to a Test match duly played out. It was fitting that Siraj was the main man for India because he had stepped over the boundary cushion after dropping Brook on 19 on Sunday, an error that looked likely to cost his team the game. Woakes was the not out batsman having not faced a ball but running bravely in obvious pain. "I didn't expect him to come out like that, batting with one hand. Kudos to him," Gill said after his team did a lap of honour.

Late India comeback sets up a thrilling finale against England ICC World Test Championship

Prasidh Krishna snapped two wickets in quick succession in the final session to keep India in the game, and the hunt for a series draw alive against England. The breakthroughs pulled a bit of momentum in India's favor as the fourth day's play at The Oval came to a premature end owing to late showers. Earlier in the day, the visitors were under the pump after Harry Brook and Joe Root compiled a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket. Still requiring 324 runs at the beginning of Day 4 in the series decider, having lost Zak Crawley off the final ball on Day 3, England were pegged back after losing two wickets in the opening session. Ben Duckett, who went on to score his third half-century of the ongoing series, was removed by Prasidh Krishna. The right-arm seamer induced an outside edge off the left-hander, which was nabbed by KL Rahul in the slips cordon. Mohammed Siraj, who cleaned up Crawley to help India finish the third day's play on a high note, then removed England's stand-in captain Ollie Pope. India almost nabbed a third wicket before Lunch but Harry Brook would earn a reprieve as Siraj completed his catch off Krishna but stepped outside the boundary rope. Brook and Root then pulled the momentum back in England's favour. The 26-year-old took the initiative, scoring his second century of the five-Test series at a brisk rate - off just 91 deliveries. Brook's innings included a sizzling 14 boundaries and two maximums, before Siraj eventually claimed him off Akash Deep at 111. Root, on the other hand, complemented England's white-ball skipper with a calculative approach - ticking off another milestone in his fabled Test career. The seasoned campaigner continued to motor on, bringing up his 39th Test century on the other side of the break, going past Kumar Sangakkara (38) in the all-time tally. The ton accounts for a third from Root in the ongoing series - finishing as England's top-scorer - scoring 105 off 152 deliveries. However, just as England were breezing to a big win, India found an opening with two wickets in quick succession in the final session. Krishna removed Jacob Bethell, uprooting the middle stump out of the ground to hand India a fifth wicket on the day. The right-arm seamer, who claimed a four-wicket haul in the first innings went on to claim the big wicket of Joe Root, inducing an edge off which wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel held onto behind the stumps. With the fifth Test evenly poised, rain would force an early stoppage with England 339/6, as the fate of a fiercely contested five-Test ICC World Test Championship series moves into the final day.
