ATR sniffer dog Bairava hit by TNSTC bus near office in Pollachi, dies

COIMBATORE: Bairava, a sniffer dog attached to the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), died in a road accident on Meenkarai Road in Pollachi on Saturday morning.
At around 7.10 am, the four-year-old dog was on a regular practice session (walking exercise) with his trainer, within the Deputy Director of ATR office, when a group of stray dogs gathered outside the office.
Bairava was chasing the stray dogs when a TNSTC bus passing the Pollachi-Meenkarai road hit him. The dog died on the spot.
Bairava was instrumental in tracing the body of a four-year-old Jharkhand-native girl who was killed by a leopard and left behind between tea bushes after 17 hours of searching plantations in Pachamalai near Valparai. The dog also helped in tracing the accused in a tusk poaching case.

Villagers block bus in Mayiladuthurai for failing to halt at Kanchanagaram

Residents of Kanchanagaram village in Mayiladuthurai district staged a brief road blockade on Monday, protesting against the TNSTC-run 21C bus failing to halt at their stop during school hours. According to villagers, the 21C service, operating on the Poompuhar–Mayiladuthurai route via Tharangambadi, often skips the Kanchanagaram stop in the mornings. As the bus arrives from Poompuhar already crowded, the driver allegedly bypasses the stop citing lack of space for passengers. Protestors claimed that students were forced to run alongside the moving bus to board, with some travelling precariously on the footboard. Despite submitting petitions to the Collector earlier, they claimed no action had been taken. On Monday morning, irate villagers intercepted the 21C bus on the Poompuhar main road, preventing it from proceeding for some time. The protest ended after students were allowed to board.

Citing indignity to women, the complainant requested immediate intervention by the NHRC. Taking cognisance, the Commission directed that a copy of the complaint be sent to the DGP for necessary action. The ATR should be submitted in English within four weeks of the communication, NHRC said.
