Chief Executive of London Gatwick express condolences after Air India crash near Ahmedabad
London [UK], June 14 (ANI): Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive of London Gatwick Airport, has expressed his condolences to the families of those who died in the Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad.
In a statement posted by London Gatwick on X, Wingate said the airport was in touch with Air India and providing support.
'We are very saddened to hear about the accident involving Air India flight AI171, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those on board. We can confirm flight AI171 that was involved in an accident shortly after departure from Ahmedabad Airport on 12 June was due to land at London Gatwick. London Gatwick is liaising closely with Air India and a reception centre for relatives of those on board is available with information and support,' the statement added.

According to the statement, 'The Boeing 787-8 aircraft had 242 passengers and crew members on board. British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call 020 7008 5000. Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline number +91806 2779 200 to provide more information. Further updates will be issued in due course.'
The crash occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, which was heading to London Gatwick, went down in the Meghaninagar area.
A total of 241 people were killed in the crash. Air India said the passengers included 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals.
Meanwhile, the British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and conveyed her condolences over the incident. She said the UK and India are working closely to gather more information and stand ready to assist the families of British nationals who were affected.
In a post on X, Cameron wrote, 'I met with Prime Minister @narendramodi this morning. We shared condolences in the face of this tragic accident, and I offered my thanks for the work of tireless first responders here in Ahmedabad. The UK and India are working together to establish the facts. 4 teens drown after being swept away in Sharda river
Shamli: Four teenagers drowned after being swept away while bathing in Sharda river near Devraghat in Sitapur district, police said on Saturday. Avinash, Utkarsh, and Devansh Singh, all 14, and Rahul Kumar, 13, all residents of Hasanpur Katauli village in Lakhimpur Kheri district, were bathing in the river near Akbarpur village under Tambour police station around noon on Friday. The boys waded into deep waters and were caught in a strong current. Residents attempted to rescue the boys and alerted the police. Though the site falls under the jurisdiction of Isanagar police station in Kheri, Tambour police responded swiftly and began search operations. NDRF teams were also deployed at the scene. Tambour SHO Rakesh Singh said, "The victims' families were informed about the drownings on Friday, and we have not received any complaints from them. All four victims were from labourer families. Senior officials have instructed us to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further action will be taken accordingly." Plane crash: Ranjitha's kin awaits DNA test results
Kottayam: The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital authorities collected the DNA samples of Ranjitha Gopakumaran Nair's brother Ratheesh Nair and initiated the process to identify the body on Saturday. Ratheesh along with a relative arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday. Ratheesh told TOI that he will remain in Ahmedabad until the body is identified. He said he along with the relative will be staying in another relative's house until further information is available. "We have decided to stay back here until the mortal remains are handed over," Ratheesh said. He also thanked Air India for the support and the arrangements made by the authorities for the relatives of the victims in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, Unnikrishnan, who accompanied Ratheesh, said that they were asked whether the funeral could be conducted in Ahmedabad or if they wanted to take the mortal remains to their native place. "We have told them that we want to take the mortal remains to our native place. They will show us the mortal remains only after the DNA test is completed," he said. Meanwhile, Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony said that the minister of civil aviation spoke to Ranjitha's mother and brother over the phone on Friday night. Antony said that the central govt assured all support to the families of the victims. He also said that the Union minister told the family that he will be visiting them when he comes to Kerala next. Ranjitha, who was a nursing officer at the district hospital in Kozhencherry, was working abroad after taking leave from govt service. She came home for a short visit for self-attesting the documents needed for joining back the govt job. The plane crash happened while she was returning to the UK. Traditional fishing festival draws thousands at Periya Kanmai
