Man fined RM6,000 for threatening DBKL officer over balloon vendor incident
KUALA LUMPUR: A father of five has been fined RM6,000, in default five months' jail, by the Magistrates' Court here after pleading guilty to threatening a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officer over the balloon vendor incident in March 2025.
Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan, while meting out the sentence on clothing trader Mustafa Sulaiman, 57, said public interest must prevail, adding that the accused's remarks were akin to "pouring fuel on fire".
"The court hopes this sentence will serve as a lesson to the accused. For the first charge, he is fined RM2,000 or two months' jail in default; for the second, RM4,000 or three months in default," she said on Monday (May 19).
Mustafa was charged with making a statement with the intent to incite others to commit an offence against DBKL officer Mohammad Shahli Zaini Mohd Zulkepli, 32.
The charge under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
He was also charged with criminal intimidation for sending a WhatsApp message threatening to cause death or injury to Mohammad Shahli, under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment, or a fine, or both.
Both offences were committed at the DBKL enforcement tower, Jalan Yaacob Latif, Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, at 10.30am on April 7.
Mustafa's lawyer, Dzafir Firdaus Ahmad Zubairy, pleaded for a minimal fine, citing that his client is the sole breadwinner for his wife, five children and mother-in-law.
"This is his first offence and he has no prior criminal record. The statement was made in a WhatsApp group and did not amount to incitement," he submitted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa, however, pressed for a deterrent sentence, arguing that the WhatsApp screenshot clearly contained threats, incitement and elements of intimidation directed at a DBKL enforcement officer in the course of his official duties.
"The accused acted with malicious intent to undermine the reputation of the Mayor and to incite harm against DBKL enforcement personnel," she added. – Bernama

Two policemen, ex-cop claim trial to graft charges
ALOR STAR: Two policemen and a former cop claimed trial to corruption charges at the Sessions Court here today. Lance Corporal Ahmad Rabani Rusnizal, 29, and Lance Corporal Mohamad Shukre Mohamed Rowi, 37, together with former police corporal Wan Mohd Nor Imran Wan Seman, 35, entered the plea before judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini. According to the charge, the three of them, acting with common intent, allegedly agreed to accept a bribe of RM20,000 in cash from Azizi Norhafizi Abu Bakar as an inducement not to take action against him for being in possession of methamphetamine (syabu). At the time of the alleged offence, all three were serving in the Crime Prevention Branch at Merbok police station. The offence is alleged to have taken place at the Semeling police post, Kuala Muda, at 11.30pm on July 23, 2023. Meanwhile, in the same court, Ahmad Rabani, Mohamad Shukre and another policeman, Corporal Azmil Rizal Azhar, 34, also pleaded not guilty to two other charges. For the first of these charges, the three accused allegedly agreed, with common intent, to accept a bribe of RM10,000 from Azizi Norhafizi as an inducement not to take action against him for possessing methamphetamine. They also claimed trial to a separate charge for allegedly receiving RM5,000 bribe from the same individual under similar circumstances. The two offences were allegedly committed at the Semeling police post and at a 7-Eleven outlet in Taman Lembah Bujang Indah, Merbok, on Oct 25 and 26, 2023, respectively. All charges were framed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. If found guilty, they face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000 — whichever is higher. Jobless man charged with wife's murder faces additional arson charges
MUAR: An unemployed man charged earlier with murdering his wife was brought before the Sessions Court here today to face additional charges of mischief by setting fire to nine vehicles belonging to his wife and brother-in-law. Mohamad Khairul Azmi Ithnin, 32, pleaded guilty to six of the nine charges read before Judge Sayani Mohd Nor. He admitted to the first and fifth through ninth charges involving the arson of six vehicles comprising two four-wheel drives, two motorcycles, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a car. The offences were committed in Kampung Pengkalan Kota, Durian Chondong and Kebun Durian Kampung Teratai 2, Sagil between 4.36am and 6.46am on June 3. For the second to fourth charges, which involve the burning of two motorcycles and a car in Kampung Pengkalan Kota on the same date and time, the accused pleaded not guilty. All charges fall under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries the maximum sentence of 14 years in jail and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi prosecuted while the accused was not represented. The prosecution requested a new date for mention of all charges and informed the court that no bail would be offered as the accused also faces a separate murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code, filed at the magistrate's court in Tangkak earlier today.
