Elly De La Cruz delivers clutch hit as Reds stay hot, beat Rays
Starting pitcher Andrew Abbott gave up one run on two hits and struck out seven in six innings for the Reds, who have won three straight and nine of 13.
Rays starter Ryan Pepiot also went six, allowing two runs on two hits. Tampa Bay has lost five of its past six games.
With the bases loaded and two out, De La Cruz lifted a slider off reliever Garrett Cleavinger into the gap in center field, scoring Spencer Steer and TJ Friedl to put Cincinnati in front 4-2. Cleavinger replaced Bryan Baker (3-4), who departed after 2/3 of the inning because of an injury.
In the eighth, Friedl and Matt McLain each connected for an RBI single to extend it to 6-2.
Down by one entering the sixth, the Reds capitalized on a fielding error by Rays shortstop Taylor Walls to take a 2-1 lead. After Friedl drew a walk, McLain connected for an infield single. Each advanced when De La Cruz grounded out, and then Austin Hays put a changeup towards Walls, who missed the grab, allowing the ball to roll into the outfield and bringing in Friedl and McLain.
The Rays tied it 2-2 in the seventh against reliever Graham Ashcraft (6-4). Jose Caballero walked and went to third on Jonny DeLuca's single to center field. Josh Lowe then pinch hit a single to left, driving in Caballero.
Yandy Diaz opened the scoring in the top of the sixth, knocking a lead-off home run 415 feet into center field to put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0.
Both sides struggled to get on base through the first five innings, with each recording just one hit and three total baserunners and only once reaching second base.
Cincinnati manager Terry Francona was ejected by home plate umpire Willie Traynor in the top of the seventh after arguing a call.

Reports: Mikal Bridges agrees to 4-year, $150 million extension with Knicks
August 1 - Fresh off playing an integral role in the New York Knicks reaching their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years, forward Mikal Bridges agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract with the team on Thursday, according to multiple media reports. The deal reportedly includes a player option for 2029-30 and a trade kicker, making Bridges, 28, ineligible to be traded for six months after the signing extension. His previous deal was set to expire following the 2025-26 season. The new contract is reportedly a slight discount from his potential max extension of $156 million. By agreeing to a reduced salary, though, the Knicks gain more flexibility to continue building out the roster and potentially make another deep playoff run. New York acquired Bridges last summer as part of a massive trade that included sending four unprotected first-round picks and one protected first-rounder to the Brooklyn Nets. Braves top Reds in extras after teams score 16 runs in 8th
August 1 - Marcell Ozuna's sacrifice fly drove in Matt Olson with the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-11 on Thursday night in a wild game in Cincinnati. After the Braves scored eight runs in the top of the eighth, the Reds nearly completed one of the greatest comebacks in the history of their storied franchise by erasing an 11-3 deficit. They followed with eight runs of their own in the bottom half. After a scoreless ninth inning, Atlanta's Ozuna cashed in the free runner Olson off Emilio Pagan (2-4) in the first extra inning to help the Braves go ahead for good and survive blowing the eight-run, eighth-inning lead. Pierce Johnson (2-3) didn't surrender any hits in the ninth to collect the win and Raisel Iglesias was perfect in the 10th to earn his 13th save in 18 chances. Ozzie Albies went 4-for-6 and drove in two runs for the Braves, who erased an early 3-0 hole and broke open a 3-3 game with an eight-run eighth, as Atlanta sent 11 batters to the plate. The first eight batters of the bottom half recorded hits for Cincinnati and all scored, with Ke'Bryan Hayes and Spencer Steer belting three-run homers. Reds right-hander Brent Suter stopped the hemorrhaging in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth before Pagan came on for the 10th. This is the second historic collapse by the Braves' bullpen this season. On June 5, Atlanta blew a 10-4 ninth-inning lead at home and lost 11-10 to Arizona. But this time the Braves came out on top. Atlanta has won four of the five meetings this season with Cincinnati, clinching the season series for the fourth time in five years. Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double from Tyler Stephenson to left-center. An inning later, Elly De La Cruz belted a Carlos Carrasco pitch to the grass berm in center for his first home run since June 23 against the New York Yankees. The 30-game drought was the longest of De La Cruz's career and spanned 114 at-bats.
