New Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Manufaktur Will Be A Rare Beast
The standard GLS 63 is already a $150k SUV, so how much will this be?
Exclusive GLS 63 Limited To 450 Units
Already the ultimate boss SUV from Mercedes-AMG, a special edition of the GLS 63 has been revealed. Like several other high-performance Mercs, the name is a mouthful: Say hello to the 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Manufaktur Arctic Silver edition. It follows the reveal of the CLE Manufaktur edition in April.
Only 450 examples of this GLS 63 are set to go into production, although the exact number reserved for the United States isn't known at this stage. There are no apparent performance upgrades to an already powerful SUV. Rather, this GLS 63 is all about elevated style and presence – and, most likely, an eye-watering price.

Model-Exclusive Paint Finish And Special Black/Red Accents
Despite 'Arctic Silver' forming part of this special edition's name, it will officially be finished in Manufaktur Cirrus Silver Magno paint, a finish that's reserved for this model. The silver is complemented by numerous black and red accents around the body, including red AMG brake calipers.
Huge 23-inch wheels are AMG multi-spoke forged items in a matte black finish with red rim flanges. Look closely, and you'll be able to spot an AMG logo and laurel wreath elements on the center caps.
To keep the moody theme going, the AMG Night Package adorns various elements in a glossy black finish. This finish extends to the front splitter, mirror housings, window surrounds, side sill panels, and rear fascia. More dark finishes find their way onto the tailpipes and roof rails.
A High-End Interior To Match
Inside, this special edition of the GLS 63 gets even better materials and finishes than the standard derivative. Nappa leather in Manufaktur Carmine Red/Black covers the seats, and this has a luxurious diamond quilting. There's a special AMG Performance steering wheel, and unique AMG Carbon Fiber trim with red accents accentuates the sporty atmosphere.
Door sill trims are finished in black, with contrasting white illuminated AMG lettering that's model-specific. Combined, these touches remind you that you're not in any ordinary GLS 63.
Same Tire-Shredding Performance Expected
No performance upgrades were mentioned, so we expect this special GLS 63 to have the same 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. With a nine-speed automatic and 4Matic all-wheel drive, the 0-60 mph sprint takes 4.1 seconds.
Although smaller AMG models have gone the downsizing route, the GLS 63 retains a charismatic V8, and it's all the better for it. Performance aside, it's the character of this engine that can't be replicated with a smaller V6 or four-pot, no matter how much hybridization Mercedes packs into the powertrain.

How Much Will It Cost?
Pricing should be announced closer to the arrival of this model later in 2025, but we expect it to be substantially more expensive than the normal GLS 63, primarily because of the Manufaktur edition's exclusivity.
The standard GLS starts at $149,500 for the 2025 model year, and you can add another $15,000 or more on top of that when it's fully loaded. With that in mind, expect the GLS 63 Manufaktur Arctic Silver edition to cost around $180,000 – or more than the $178,450 you'll pay for the exceptional Mercedes-Maybach GLS SUV.

As Trump and Musk's fallout deepens, has the president finally met his match?
Donald Trump has torn down every opponent who has stood in the way of his political ambitions. In Elon Musk, he may have met his match. The formidable powers that these two American titans can bring to bear in a full-throated feud suggest that a truce is the most sensible outcome. But sense was in short supply during a pyrotechnic clash of planetary-sized egos this week that may have ramifications far beyond terrestrial confines and reach into both men's ambitions to conquer space. No mere politician has been able to withstand the full force of Trump's displeasure and plenty of Republican careers have been cut short by the president mobilising his loyal supporters against them. But the world's wealthiest man is in a different league. He has a powerful platform in X, formerly Twitter, to insist the emperor has no clothes that could cut through to Trump's base like no Democrat or 'Rino' (Republican in name only) can, as Trump labels detractors in his own party. Both men own social media sites and conducted their extraordinary break-up in posts aimed at the other on their own respective platforms. This proved costly to their personal fortunes — on Thursday shares in Musk's Tesla car company fell by 14.26 per cent, wiping more than $150 billion off its stock market value, while Trump Media & Technology dropped 8.04 per cent, erasing around $500 million. Musk, who has 220.5 million followers on X, proved the more relentless, in a warning sign to Trump, who has 9.86 million followers on Truth Social and has not posted on X since Tuesday. That was the day when Musk snapped, calling the One Big Beautiful Bill that contains all of Trump's tax cuts a 'disgusting abomination'. He followed it with a warning that 'in November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people'. On Thursday he asked: 'Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80 pert cent in the middle?' However, Musk does not have the same hold over voters as Trump, as shown by his attempt to sway a Wisconsin supreme court judge election which the Democrats romped after turning it into a 'People vs Musk' campaign. But Musk does command support from an influential and wealthy tech community, who were rallying to him on Thursday, and his fortune gives him huge clout in the US system of unlimited election spending. He gave $250 million to help Trump in 2024 and claims this was decisive. Just four Republican senators are required to sink the One Big Beautiful Bill given the slender majority in the upper chamber and Musk's vocal opposition and financial support could provide some extra fortitude for those thinking of standing up to Trump's formidable powers of persuasion. Trump's usual approach to truly powerful adversaries is to sound tough from a distance but then make nice in person. This has been the pattern of his interactions with President Putin of Russia and President Xi of China. But he has not faced a domestic adversary like Musk, who has more money, bigger companies, more social media reach, little political ambition of his own and is unpredictable and uncompromising. All these factors led Susie Wiles, Trump's chief-of-staff, to try and keep him out of the West Wing to avoid becoming a disruptive influence. Musk is now fighting for his reputation, which has imploded with his natural constituency of liberal America following his 'bromance' with Trump and government cost-cutting. High-profile figures including Bono, the U2 singer, accuse him of responsibility for hundreds of thousands of deaths in Africa for dismantling the US Agency for International Development. Musk's companies have received $38 billion in federal funds, much of it going to SpaceX. Trump mused on Truth Social: 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.' But there are also some damaging moves Musk could make, such as downplaying or 'shadowbanning' Trump-supporting voices on X while promoting and funding political rivals. Scaling back SpaceX co-operation with Nasa would sink Trump's extraterrestrial ambitions. Trump was applauded when he said in his inaugural address that: 'We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.' Most of those involved in the space exploration business know this is a fantasy within Trump's term but no-one appears to have told him. • Gerard Baker: Elon Musk was destined to crash out of Trumpworld Musk's Dragon spacecraft are the only ones in America capable of ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station. In response to Trump's threat, on Thursday he posted: 'In light of the President's statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.' True or bluff? That's straight out of Trump's playbook. Musk's own Mars ambitions include an unmanned mission arriving in 2027, funded by profits from his Starlink satellite business. The ultimate act of one-upmanship would be for SpaceX to land an Optimus 'Tesla Bot' robot on Mars without Nasa and deny Trump the chance to claim it as his own achievement.

How ending self-checkouts boosted Dollar General's sales
It may be the end of self-checkouts as we know it after Dollar General's tech gamble paid off. The retailer removed self-checkouts from 12,000 stores nationwide in 2024 - leaving them in only a handful of locations. The company said at the time that it made the move in order to cut rising 'shrink', the retail term for theft. The value store had seen shoplifting soar since installing the tech. Now it seems removing the machines is helping stop theft. The company reported that lower shrink and higher inventory markup were major factors in boosting its income by 8 percent to $392 million in the first quarter of this year, Retail Dive reported. Chief Financial Officer Kelly Dilts said improvement in shrink rates will be a tailwind throughout the year and that 'should be the gift that just keeps on giving.' 'The removal of self-checkout is sensible at Dollar General. The stores are pretty small and don't really need self-checkout,' Neil Saunders, retail expert at GlobalDatatold Other chains may follow in its footsteps, he added, but he does not think it is likely they will disappear entirely from all stores. 'I think some chains will remove self checkout, but we won't see the concept disappear entirely. It still has advantages,' Saunders said. Retailers like Walmart , Costco, and Target have already begun removing self-checkout, mainly to curb theft and revamp stores. In the first quarter of this year Dollar General has opened 156 stores and remodeled 688 locations as part of its Project Elevate, and revamped 599 through so-called Project Renovate. The company continues to operate over 20,000 stores in the US and Mexico, and it finished off this year's first quarter with $10.4 billion in net sales, a 5.3 percent increase from this time last year. 'As we think about gross margin, we are just really pleased with where shrink came in,' chief financial officer Dilts said. CEO Todd J Vasos also praised improvements in layout and merchandising. 'Our store standards are much, much better than they've been in quite a long time, and every single quarter that goes by continues to get better and better,' he said on Tuesday. Walmart also experienced sales increases in its recent quarters, having removed self-checkouts from all Sam's Club stores in favor of AI technology . While Target has removed self-checkout in some locations, a spokesperson told the New York Post that it will not be gone for good. Despite the apparent success of the removal of self-checkout machines, it has not been completely smooth sailing for Dollar General in recent months. Locations were shuttered last year, and Vasos claimed its 49 percent profit drop in last year's fourth quarter was partially due to consumers pulling back on spending . 'Many of our customers report they only have enough money for basic essentials, with some noting that they have had to sacrifice even on the necessities,' Vasos said as the retailer announced October to December earnings. has reached out to Dollar General for comment.
