Psychological thriller labelled a ‘masterpiece' free to stream on BBC iPlayer
A 'masterpiece' psychological thriller is making its way to BBC iPlayer.
Released in 2021, The Power of the Dog stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, and Kirsten Dunst and is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage.
The film follows wealthy ranching brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Plemons) who meet widow Rose (Dunst) and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) during a cattle drive.
The volatile and brash Phil takes a dislike to Rose, but George strikes up a relationship with her – which eventually leads them to marry – and Rose and Peter to move to the Burbank ranch house.
As Phil taunts Rose, he appears to take Peter under his wing, but his intentions don't seem as clear-cut to Rose.
For those who didn't catch the award-winning hit, or just want to rewatch, it is now free to stream on BBC iPlayer, as well as Netflix.
The Power of the Dog proved an instant hit following its premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, garnering a whopping 12 Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nods.
It is often cited as one of the best films of 2021, and indeed of the decade as a whole, and was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute.
It currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading: 'Brought to life by a stellar ensemble led by Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog reaffirms writer-director Jane Campion as one of her generation's finest filmmakers.'
Metro critic Tori Brazier dubbed the film a 'taut and emotional epic' in her review, adding: 'A rich and detailed character study for each of its excellent four leads – and especially Cumberbatch and Smit-McPhee, who is an admirable scene partner – The Power of the Dog brings everything you'd expect, and hope for, from the writer and director of The Piano.
'The film is like watching a play, so focused is it on the minutiae of seemingly small human actions and emotions, and so nuanced in its storytelling.'
The New York Times wrote: 'The Power of the Dog builds tremendous force, gaining its momentum through the harmonious discord of its performances, the nervous rhythms of Jonny Greenwood's score and the grandeur of its visuals.' More Trending
USA Today lauded The Power of the Dog a 'picturesque, enthralling exploration of male ego and toxic masculinity, crafted by an extremely talented woman and offering enough nuanced bite to keep it interesting till the very end.'
InSession Film said: 'Much has already been said about Jane Campion's western masterpiece, and for good reason. It is indeed truly great. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a career-best performance.'
Heaping praise on Cumberbatch, with Ty Burr writing on his Substack: 'How do we know Benedict Cumberbatch is a serious thespian? Because we have no idea who he is offscreen. He's just entirely the role he's playing at any given moment, and those roles change radically.'

In recent years he owned a multi-million-dollar house in the exclusive town of Laguna Beach, California, and was pictured in 2022 moving in with Zellweger in her $30,000-per-month clifftop home across the street. But for the past year he had downgraded to a modest, 832sqft, two-bed rental listed at $4,250 per month. Anstead's spokeswoman told the small house he left over a month ago 'was rented solely by Mr. Anstead'. His landlord confirmed Zellweger was not on the lease. The Bridget Jones's Diary star has been in New York City filming a new season of popular Hulu show, Only Murders in the Building, while Anstead was believed to be spending time in the UK, in recent weeks before returning to Laguna. His rep told he 'continues to remain private about his cherished personal relationship.' Zellweger's rep declined to comment. Meanwhile, a source close to the Bridget Jones star told they are still dating, despite living apart. However, the pair have never been seen engaging in any non-platonic behaviour. A source close to Anstead claimed he had been staying in the apartment on the property since he moved out of his modest rented house around April. 'One of her kids goes to the same school as Hudson. When Ant's working late or needs childcare, Hudson goes back with Jules' kids. Then in the evening Ant picks Hudson up,' the source said. 'But they've had this flirtatious friendship going on,' the insider added. 'So when he moved out of [his two-bed rental], he moved into the apartment above the garage at Jules' place. 'He's trying to find another rental place. But for now, he's got stuff in storage and he's got a lot of stuff with Jules.' Netflix viewers left with 'jaw on floor' over 'outrageous' new documentary
The new documentary is now available to stream on Netflix Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser -Netflix trailer Netflix viewers have branded a new documentary as "outrageous" as they have been left with their "jaw on the floor". August 15 saw a brand new docuseries land on Netflix, Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser, which takes an inside look at the making of the hit competition. The show ran for 18 seasons beginning in 2004 and finishing in 2016, and there was a revival attempt back in 2020. But this three-part series features exclusive interviews with the creators, producers, past contestants and trainers like Bob Harper who were involved in making the show. And fans are hooked as they brand the documentary as "outrageous" and is a must see. One star, who appeared in season 8, Tracey Yukich spoke about her experience on the documentary as she said it was life-changing. During one particular extreme challenge set up by the show's producers, she says she had a near death experience. Taking to TikTok one user branded the documentary as "outrageous" as they added: "Throughout the entire series my jaw was on the floor, I was in a red hot rage." One person commented: "It's really horrific. I actually loved watching the Australian version at the time. How things have changed! Why didn't I see it then?" Another replied: "OMG I literally just finished binge watching this! Awful." In another video, one person said they were left in tears as another replied: "Glad I'm not the only one who just broke into tears." Over on X, one person wrote: "Netflix has been in their bag with these documentaries. This Biggest Loser Doc is crazy." Another said: "Anybody watch that Netflix doc about the Biggest Loser yet? Wow that was one of the saddest things I've seen in a while." A third added: "this biggest loser doc is no joke. I love it. Netflix." Exploring the good, the bad, and the complicated, the series examines the show's approach to transformation and the support systems in place as well as how the experience shaped the lives of those involved on the show after the cameras had stopped filming. A Netflix synopsis reads: "Contenders on "The Biggest Loser" wanted the body of their dreams. Instead, many fell into a televised nightmare. Now, they tell their side of the story."
