A 'masterpiece' psychological thriller is making its way to BBC iPlayer.
Released in 2021, The Power of the Dog stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, and Kirsten Dunst and is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage.
The film follows wealthy ranching brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Plemons) who meet widow Rose (Dunst) and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) during a cattle drive.
The volatile and brash Phil takes a dislike to Rose, but George strikes up a relationship with her – which eventually leads them to marry – and Rose and Peter to move to the Burbank ranch house.
As Phil taunts Rose, he appears to take Peter under his wing, but his intentions don't seem as clear-cut to Rose.
For those who didn't catch the award-winning hit, or just want to rewatch, it is now free to stream on BBC iPlayer, as well as Netflix.
The Power of the Dog proved an instant hit following its premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, garnering a whopping 12 Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nods.
It is often cited as one of the best films of 2021, and indeed of the decade as a whole, and was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute.
It currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading: 'Brought to life by a stellar ensemble led by Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog reaffirms writer-director Jane Campion as one of her generation's finest filmmakers.'
Metro critic Tori Brazier dubbed the film a 'taut and emotional epic' in her review, adding: 'A rich and detailed character study for each of its excellent four leads – and especially Cumberbatch and Smit-McPhee, who is an admirable scene partner – The Power of the Dog brings everything you'd expect, and hope for, from the writer and director of The Piano.
'The film is like watching a play, so focused is it on the minutiae of seemingly small human actions and emotions, and so nuanced in its storytelling.'
The New York Times wrote: 'The Power of the Dog builds tremendous force, gaining its momentum through the harmonious discord of its performances, the nervous rhythms of Jonny Greenwood's score and the grandeur of its visuals.' More Trending
USA Today lauded The Power of the Dog a 'picturesque, enthralling exploration of male ego and toxic masculinity, crafted by an extremely talented woman and offering enough nuanced bite to keep it interesting till the very end.'
InSession Film said: 'Much has already been said about Jane Campion's western masterpiece, and for good reason. It is indeed truly great. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a career-best performance.'
Heaping praise on Cumberbatch, with Ty Burr writing on his Substack: 'How do we know Benedict Cumberbatch is a serious thespian? Because we have no idea who he is offscreen. He's just entirely the role he's playing at any given moment, and those roles change radically.'
The Power of the Dog is streaming on BBC iPlayer and Netflix

Oscar winner says Hollywood friends 'cancelled' him as he voted for Donald Trump

Producer Brian Grazer, a long-time Democratic donor, said the reaction he received after admitting he voted for Donald Trump made him feel like he was 'getting cancelled' An Oscar-winning producer has said he felt "cancelled" by his Hollywood friends because he voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Brian Grazer, a long-time Democratic donor who identifies himself as "centrist", opened up about the reaction he received for supporting Trump during a new Fox Nation docuseries titled Art of the Surge. The behind-the-scenes documentary follows Trump's return to the White House - and in one scene, Brian can be seen alongside the then president-elect in a VIP box at the Army-Navy game. ‌ On that occasion, Brian book a photo with Trump and confessed to a group of surprised women in the box that he had voted for the Republican. At that point, the women asked him: "You mean, you're not voting for Kamala?" to which he replied: "I just can't do that." ‌ Brian explained: "And then, one of them leaned in further, and said, 'Are you voting for Trump?' And I said, 'I am. I swear!'" As part of the series, the producer, known for working on films such as A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13, confessed the reaction he received made him feel like he was "getting cancelled." The New York Times reported that Brian explained his Trump vote by saying: "As a centrist, it was because I could feel and see Biden's deterioration and the lack of direction in the Democratic Party at that time." The second season of Art of the Surge, produced by former Tucker Carlson Tonight executive producer Justin Wells, is currently streaming on Fox Nation. Before voting for Trump, Brian reportedly donated to Kamala Harris in the past, and also raised money for other Democrats. After his confession emerged, fans took to Reddit to share their reactions - and while some agreed with his thought process, others said the fact that he no longer agreed with the direction of Democrats doesn't justify voting for Republicans, as there are "other choices" too. A person wrote: "Does he understand that if he doesn't like the Democrats he doesn't have to vote for Republicans? There are other choices." Another said: "He knew that as a rich person he'd be safe whichever party won. Not everyone has that privilege." A third expressed: "Every centrist is just a republican that is ashamed to admit it." One asked: "Does centrist mean something totally different in the US? In the UK it's synonymous with liberal (rather than left) and generally describes people who would never vote conservative. But in the US it seems to mean people who could happily vote far right?" Brian isn't the only Hollywood celebrity who voiced support for Trump. Other supporters of the president also include actor Mel Gibson, TV host Dr Phil, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe and actress Victoria Jackson.

'Exquisite' Amazon Prime show cancelled after only one series

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Amazon Prime Video have cancelled the TV series Étoile in spite of its impressive 85% fresh critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Helmed by Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Étoile had initially been greenlit by the streaming service for two seasons. Debuting in April this year, its story followed the directors of two rival ballet companies as they attempted to save their institutions from collapse. In a last-ditch effort to save these world-renowned institutions, they hatch a plan to switch leading ladies, swapping their most talented stars in an ambitious gambit. Starring Luke Kirby and Nymphomaniac star Charlotte Gainsbourg as the ballet companies' directors, it was released to strong word of mouth and favourable reception from viewers. However, that apparently hasn't been enough to save Étoile, which has reportedly been axed after only one series. Fans reacted to the news with dismay on social media, with many writing of their disappointment that another show had met its end so prematurely. 'Amazon keeps cancelling the few shows on Prime I enjoy. Such shame for Etoile,' wrote marsjfields. 'Amazon Prime u are DEAD to me (My Lady Jane, Wheel of Time and now Etoile?????)' said suvanias. 'Étoile on Amazon Prime Video is reportedly being cancelled according to Deadline. Hard to believe this is not a stunt to attract more viewership. The show is phenomenal. Heartbroken if true. Loved the show,' commented danpavacic. Those reacting with disappointment are in sync with its positive Rotten Tomatoes score – having garnered an 85% 'Fresh' approval rating from critics on the review aggregator. 'Étoile is one of the most perfect, and I don't use that term lightly, pilots I've ever seen,' wrote Neely Swanson of the Beverley Hills Courier. 'As ravishing as it feels radical,' said Joey Moser of The Contending. Contributing a 76% score, audiences were just as full of praise, with the user Madison J describing it as a 'fabulous show with exquisite talent, a great story line and gorgeous scenes.' In April, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino weighed in on whether the second series would come to pass, telling Variety: 'You'll have to ask Amazon.' 'It's pending,' agreed husband and co-creator Daniel. Sadly, it looks as though that second series never will come to pass, unless Amazon, for some reason,n decide to pirouette on their decision to axe. The ballet comedy-drama was the latest collaboration from Gilmore Girls duo Amy and Daniel, who subsequently worked together on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. More Trending Their most beloved hit ended in 2007 with a follow-up miniseries in 2016, but fans remain hopeful that the Gilmore girls might one day return. Last year, star Lauren Graham reunited with screen mum Kelly Bishop, giving fresh hope that Friday night dinners might one day resume service. Series creator Amy weighed in on the chances of another revival, telling Variety: 'It would be delightful. We love the actors, we love the world, we love writing those characters. The time just has to be right. It's alchemy.' View More » Series One of Étoile is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video. Got a story?
