V.S. Achuthanandan combined class politics with mass politics

The Hindu21-07-2025
V.S Achuthanandan was at the same time a 'rebel' from within and a leader who took his fight forward without breaching the boundaries of discipline set by the the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
It was a rare distinction that many other stalwarts, including M.V. Raghavan, and K.R. Gouri Amma, who were expelled from the party following internal rift, could not achieve. He developed this effective mix through his political shrewdness. He prompted a course correction in the party leadership by bringing people's issues to the public sphere.
Two defeats had initiated a deconstruction process in his political career, from a leader who had strongly pursued the Stalinist principles and methods in the initial phase to a people's leader later. At the 1991 State conference in Kozhikode, he was defeated by E.K. Nayanar in the election for the party's State secretary by a margin of two votes. The electoral defeat in the Mararikulam Assembly constituency in 1996 was another shocking setback.
From then onwards, he combined class politics with mass politics. At a time when the Kerala unit of the CPI(M) was seen aligning with globalisation and market forces under the guise of development, his voice stood apart. He undertook the cause of the landless, Adivasis, Dalits, and those displaced for development projects. He opposed groundwater exploitation by Coca-Cola company in Plachimada, Palakkad, and fought against encroachment on Mathikettan Shola and Munnar.
He had this uncanny ability to think differently as seen in his campaign for open-source software and praise for Richard Stallman, the archangel of the global free software movement. He had the patience to listen to such alternative possibilities. He had used the lessons garnered from such interactions as tools against his fight for justice.

New Deans of Faculty nominated in Calicut varsity

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, also the Chancellor of the University of Calicut, has nominated new Deans of Faculty in various disciplines. This follows the culmination of the tenure of the incumbents. K. Mohammed Haneefa, one of the Syndicate members, has been chosen as the Dean, Humanities. The others are Sam Thomas (Commerce and Management), K. Abdul Gafoor (Education), V. Vinod (Engineering), Damodar Prasad (Journalism), R.V.M. Divakaran (Language and Literature), J. Gireesh Kumar (Law), and M. Mohammed Mustafa (Science). Meanwhile, academics aligned with the Opposition parties have alleged that this was a result of a 'rapprochement' between the Governor and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its mass organisations, who till recently were firmly opposed to some of his actions. Seven of the newly nominated officials were pro-Left academics, they said, adding that an agreement had been reached between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Governor when the former visited him at the Raj Bhavan recently. The Opposition-aligned staff organisations also questioned the silence of the Left unions on the issue.

Let BJP provide evidence on diversion of funds meant for SCs, STs, says Kharge

Refuting the allegation that funds allocated for the welfare of Dalits under Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) have been diverted by the Congress government, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has asked BJP leaders to provide records to prove their charge. 'Let the BJP leaders furnish detailed documents on the diversion of such funds, instead of making baseless accusation and misleading people,' Mr. Kharge told a press conference here on Monday. 'In fact, these funds were diverted for various department works during the then BJP government in the State. The former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is now BJP MP, himself accepted it during Assembly session. But now the same BJP leaders are spreading false propaganda and attempting to criticize the Congress-led government in the State,' Mr. Kharge claimed. Mr. Kharge dared the BJP leaders to get more funds from the Central government for the welfare of Dalits and adivasis, if they are really concerned about them. He said that at least a State ruled by the BJP should receive additional funds from the Central government for the uplift of the marginalized communities. Reacting to the allegation made by the Opposition about discrimination in the allocation of development funds to constituencies represented by their MLAs, Mr. Kharge said, 'When the BJP was in power in the State, there was discrimination in releasing funds to constituencies represented by Congress MLAs.' 'They have not allocated equal grants and I have openly expressed this many times,' he claimed. Responding to a query on the shortage of urea in the State, Mr. Kharge said that Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy met the Union Agriculture Minister urging him to supply urea to meet demand. This year, the State has not received the required quantity of fertilizer. In Kalaburagi district, farmers have achieved 100% of the sowing target and there is a demand for 500 tonnes of fertilizer. Of this demand, 200 tonnes have already been supplied from Bagalkot and the remaining (300 tonnes) will be supplied soon, he said. Mr. Kharge urged the BJP leaders to protest in Delhi and ensure that adequate fertilizer is supplied to the State. Reacting to BJP national general secretary (organization) B.L. Santhosh's objection over AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Surjewala holding meeting with Ministers in the State, Mr. Kharge asked 'Whether the BJP leaders expect Mr. Santhosh or RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale to conduct such meetings.' Expressing displeasure over the recent developments at the Central University of Karnataka, the Minister accused Central Universities of functioning like RSS Shakhas. 'Earlier, we were denied permission for organising a programme on the university campus. The university was established with the efforts of All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge to facilitate the educational development of the region but the campus is being used for RSS activities,' he claimed.

CBCI, Oppn parties slam arrest of two nuns by Chhattisgarh Police

Thiruvananthapuram: The president of the Catholics Bishop Conference of India ( CBCI) Reverend Andrews Thazhath, who is also the Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur, on Monday slammed the Chhattisgarh Police for arresting two nuns from Kerala and a man on accusations of alleged human trafficking and religious conversion by the Bajrang Dal. 'This has happened in a country where freedom of religion is allowed and hence this act should be seen very seriously. The nuns were attacked by the Bajrang Dal activists and none should forget that nuns always stand and work for the uplift of the downtrodden,' said Thazhath. 'Irrespective of whoever governs the country, the freedom of religion should be protected and upheld. Incidentally across the country at some places Christians are living in a state of fear. We have already brought this to the attention of our Prime Minister Modi,' added Thazhath. On Monday, lawmakers from Kerala, barring the BJP, brought the issue of the harassment of the nuns and their arrest, to the attention of the House by way of a notice for an adjournment motion, but it was disallowed. Thazhath however thanked the lawmakers for raising this issue in the Parliament. The nuns, Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis attached to the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church in Alappuzha district, were working at a hospital in Agra. On Saturday, the two nuns and the man, identified as Sukhman Mandavi, were accompanying three women from Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district to Agra, where they had been offered jobs of kitchen helpers at a Convent. At the railway station they were accosted by Bajrang Dal activists and the police also arrived on the scene. Both the nuns and the man were soon taken into custody and later produced before a local court which sent them to judicial custody. Close relatives of the two nuns are aghast at this act of jailing the hapless nuns whose only interest was the welfare of the downtrodden girls. 'This should not be seen as a one off incident, as we have been told that things do not augur well now in certain places in North India,' said the family of the nuns. The CPI-M state secretariat in a statement condemned the Chhattisgarh Police and the Railway officials and accused them of dancing to the tunes of Bajrang Dal activists. 'This issue should not just be seen as a Christian issue but also a gross violation of the Constitution as this is nothing but an intrusion on minority rights. There is every right not just to practice religion but also propagate it. Grave charges have been slapped on the arrested, this is in no way acceptable,' read the CPI-M statement. Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan said he had just spoken to the aged parents of one of the arrested nuns. 'This incident is not just a one off incident as incidence of attacking Christian nuns and priests in several states in North India are increasing by the day. It has come to a stage when Christian priests and nuns cannot even wear their official dress for fear of being attacked. This has to end quickly and authorities have to do the needful,' said Satheesan. Union Minister of State for Fisheries, George Kurian, said that since the matter was sub judice and he was a Minister, he would not make any comment on the issue. Kerala state BJP vice-president Shone George said, 'I will say that let the court take the call and if the nuns are innocent, we have made all arrangement to ensure they are safely taken back to their respective places.'
