Let BJP provide evidence on diversion of funds meant for SCs, STs, says Kharge
'Let the BJP leaders furnish detailed documents on the diversion of such funds, instead of making baseless accusation and misleading people,' Mr. Kharge told a press conference here on Monday.
'In fact, these funds were diverted for various department works during the then BJP government in the State. The former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is now BJP MP, himself accepted it during Assembly session. But now the same BJP leaders are spreading false propaganda and attempting to criticize the Congress-led government in the State,' Mr. Kharge claimed.
Mr. Kharge dared the BJP leaders to get more funds from the Central government for the welfare of Dalits and adivasis, if they are really concerned about them. He said that at least a State ruled by the BJP should receive additional funds from the Central government for the uplift of the marginalized communities.
Reacting to the allegation made by the Opposition about discrimination in the allocation of development funds to constituencies represented by their MLAs, Mr. Kharge said, 'When the BJP was in power in the State, there was discrimination in releasing funds to constituencies represented by Congress MLAs.'
'They have not allocated equal grants and I have openly expressed this many times,' he claimed.
Responding to a query on the shortage of urea in the State, Mr. Kharge said that Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy met the Union Agriculture Minister urging him to supply urea to meet demand. This year, the State has not received the required quantity of fertilizer.
In Kalaburagi district, farmers have achieved 100% of the sowing target and there is a demand for 500 tonnes of fertilizer. Of this demand, 200 tonnes have already been supplied from Bagalkot and the remaining (300 tonnes) will be supplied soon, he said.
Mr. Kharge urged the BJP leaders to protest in Delhi and ensure that adequate fertilizer is supplied to the State.
Reacting to BJP national general secretary (organization) B.L. Santhosh's objection over AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Surjewala holding meeting with Ministers in the State, Mr. Kharge asked 'Whether the BJP leaders expect Mr. Santhosh or RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale to conduct such meetings.'
Expressing displeasure over the recent developments at the Central University of Karnataka, the Minister accused Central Universities of functioning like RSS Shakhas.
'Earlier, we were denied permission for organising a programme on the university campus. The university was established with the efforts of All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge to facilitate the educational development of the region but the campus is being used for RSS activities,' he claimed.

Trump's tariff tirade The U.S. President's '25% tariffs from Friday plus a penalty' may not have been unexpected as Mr. Trump has given many hints about his disapproval of India's dealings with Russia. However, his comment that India and Russia can take their 'dead economies down together' is shocking and reflects an unexplained contempt for both nations. As if this was not enough, his additional remark, of a U.S.-Pakistan oil reserve deal and the possible sale of this oil India 'some day!', is akin to adding insult to injury to India's self-respect and national pride. The Government of India's response has been strangely meek and timid. S.K. Choudhury, Bengaluru Debate in Parliament 'Operation Sindoor' is over and the Prime Minister, in his recent speech in Parliament, dwelt at length on the action taken. Therefore, it is unfortunate that the Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha is now attempting to tarnish 'Operation Sindoor' with his repeated questioning of the ceasefire. One expects a better standard of debate in Parliament from the Opposition. Mani Nataraajan, Chennai Arrest of nuns The arrest of the nuns in Chhattisgarh under 'trafficking and conversion charges' reeks more of communal vigilantism than credible law enforcement. When the kin of the tribal girls themselves deny coercion, the justification collapses. Anti-conversion laws, ostensibly to prevent forced conversions, are being misused to criminalise legitimate acts of charity, employment or faith. This is not governance. It is harassment, weaponised. When constitutional freedoms are at the mercy of fringe complaints and political appeasement, we risk replacing rule of law with rule by mob. The state must protect rights, not undermine them under pressure from ideological groups. K. Chidanand Kumar, Bengaluru Appeasement politics in Kerala and divisive politics in North India, with an eye on the vote bank, is the tactic the ruling party at the Centre is indulging in to win elections. Rather than shedding crocodile tears and expressing well-rehearsed anguish, State leaders from this national party must walk the talk. . Dr. Biju C. Mathew, Thiruvananthapuram Poverty, illiteracy and ailment are three prominent causes which are used by missionaries. The moot question is this: why were the tribal girls being taken to a place hundreds of kilometres away from Chhattisgarh? To debunk the arrests as communal vigilantism is lopsided. Ravi Mathur, Noida, Uttar Pradesh Honour killing Despite constitutional protections, it is evident that governments, central and State, have not shown a commitment to enacting legislation against honour killings, largely due to vote bank politics. Since societal beliefs in 'caste supremacy' are the root cause of these crimes, civil society has a responsibility to work collaboratively with the government to eliminate the illusion of 'caste pride' and ensure social harmony. New-generation Churches carrying out conversions: Union Minister
Union Minister of State George Kurian on Thursday said that the mainstream Churches in the country were not carrying out any conversions and it was the 'new-generation Churches' which were doing it. MR. Kurian, the Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, was responding to queries in connection with the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh over alleged conversion and human trafficking. The Minister said it was difficult for people to differentiate between the mainstream and new-generation Churches, and therefore, the BJP was taking steps to help create awareness about the two among the public. The new-generation Churches themselves have admitted that they were carrying out conversions. On being asked whether conversions were wrong, Mr. Kurian said that 'let the people of Kerala decide whether conversions were required. On whether the issue would create problems for the party in the southern State, which will see local body elections this year and Assembly elections in 2026, the Minister said it would depend on how well they can convince the people. He said that the party was able to convince the people regarding the Manipur violence issue and, therefore, it got votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. On being told that many prominent Church priests have reportedly said that the BJP leaders need not come with 'cakes' if the nuns arrest issue is not resolved, Mr. Kurian said that 'they have the freedom to say so.' Mr. Kurian said that Anoop Antony, the BJP's Kerala general secretary, has been sent to Chhattisgarh to find a resolution for the issue and 'good news was expected soon.' The BJP leader also blamed the Congress and the Left for the accusations against the saffron party in cyberspace over the issue. He questioned why no Congress MP from Chhattisgarh was part of the protests by the grand old party against the nuns' arrest.
