KUALA LUMPUR - An investigation committee has found no evidence of abuse in the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died during training at the Army Basic Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor, on July 28.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the committee's findings involved input from several ministries, including the Defence Ministry, Home Ministry, Health Ministry and Higher Education Ministry.
He said the incident occurred a day after the 22-year-old began his training on July 27, and all training activities were carried out according to established guidelines and procedures.
"Testimonies from more than 30 witnesses, including trainees and instructors, confirmed that the training followed the prescribed procedures, and no abuse was reported,' he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Armed Forces Education Excellence Awards ceremony here today.
From a medical perspective, Mohamed Khaled said a post-mortem conducted at Kota Tinggi Hospital, attended by military medical personnel, confirmed that all initial aid given to the trainee complied with standard operating procedures.
"The hospital report also confirmed there were no signs of injury on the body, consistent with police investigation findings. The cause of death will be determined after the full report is available, which is expected to take one to two months,' he said.
Mohamed Khaled stressed that the incident should not be linked or compared to the recent death of a student in Sabah, and assured that the ministry would extend full cooperation if there were any indications of abuse or criminal elements.
Syamsul Haris, the eldest of three siblings, was undergoing Combat Inoculation training at Pulada and was scheduled to complete his Palapes training on Aug 2. - BERNAMA

The Slavyansk refinery is a private plant with a capacity of around 100,000 barrels per day, supplying fuel for both domestic use and export. 'The overnight Ukrainian drone attack also targeted Russia's southern region of Volgograd,' the regional governor said. 'Drone debris fell on a 16-story residential building in the city of Volgograd, forcing residents to leave their homes, the governor,' Andrei Bocharov, said on Telegram. The city of Volgograd is the administrative centre of the broader region of the same name. The Russian defence ministry said its units destroyed 11 drones overnight over Volgograd.

RM1.12b lost to online scams in six months, NSRC steps up 24
KUALA LUMPUR — Financial losses from online scams amounted to RM1.12 billion between January and June this year. According to a written reply published on the Parliament website, the Home Ministry (KDN) said that to curb such crimes, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), in operation since October 12, 2022, has been strengthened as a one-stop centre and has been operating round the clock since July 1. This allows victims to lodge reports directly via the 997 hotline without having to go to a police station. 'After nearly three years of administrative operation, the Prime Minister, while chairing a special meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN), agreed that the NSRC should be placed under the purview of the Home Ministry and led by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),' the reply stated. The response was to a question from R. Yuneswaran (PH–Segamat), who asked about the total financial losses suffered by Malaysians due to online scams up to July this year. KDN added that other measures to curb scams include international cooperation, proposals to amend the Penal Code to address cybercrime cases, and the Semakmule 2.0 portal initiative to help the public check the status of bank accounts, phone numbers and companies potentially involved in fraudulent activities. — BERNAMA

RM1.12bil in losses to online scam in first half of 2025, says Home Ministry
KUALA LUMPUR: Online scams in Malaysia have caused a staggering RM1.12bil in financial losses in just the first half of 2025 alone, says the Home Ministry. Earlier on August 5, the Digital Ministry said online scam financial losses in 2024 reached a worrying RM1.58bil, a 2.53% increase from the year prior. The Ministry said the government would further intensify its efforts to curb online scams in the country, which include strengthening the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC). This would involve the creation of new positions involving various schemes, taking into account the establishment of the 24/7 Network function under a single governance entity. 'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also agreed for the NSRC to be placed under the direct supervision of the Home Ministry. 'It has been decided that it will be led by the police,' the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply dated Wednesday (Aug 13). The ministry was responding to a question from Yuneswaran Ramaraj (PH-Segamat) on the amount of money lost by Malaysians due to online scams and the steps being taken to address the issue. It also said that the feasibility of drafting a Cybercrime Bill is currently being studied as part of efforts to combat cybercrime in the country. The ministry added that the SemakMule portal, which enables the public to check bank account numbers, phone numbers and companies used by scammers, currently has 265,869 bank accounts, 211,265 phone numbers, and 12,724 company names recorded.
