People Are Sharing The Ways They've 'Won The Genetic Lottery,' And To Say I'm Jealous Is An Understatement

Last month, Reddit user bouquetoftarnations posted to the popular Casual Conversation subreddit with what I thought was a pretty fun question: "In what small way have you won the genetic lottery?" "In my family," they said, "we don't get eye bags or dark undereye circles. Ever. No matter how little sleep we get. And my parents and I are all really terrible at maintaining consistent sleep schedules and getting a healthy amount of sleep. So, I do feel we've sort of won the genetic lottery there. I was wondering if anyone had some similar small wins." People chimed in with some great answers, and I think it's always fun to appreciate the positives about yourself! So, here are some of the best: Related: 1."Three fully functional kidneys." Md Ariful Islam / Getty Images, Paramount Pictures —u/ADICTO613 2."I have the genetic variant known as CCR5-Δ32 deletion that is resistant to HIV infection. Discovered accidentally when testing for a rare genetic mutation that runs in my family." —u/whineybubbles 3."I can draw near photographic portraits of people with a pencil. I didn't know until I was a teenager, and it was a school assignment, and I just did a great job, and was shocked, I had no idea I could do that. Then I went to show my grandma how proud I was, looked at the art on her walls, and realized I inherited it." —u/bluetuber34 4."My brothers and I can all wiggle our noses (like on Bewitched). We got that from our dad. We use it to say 'love you' whenever the fancy strikes." "But my real 'genetic lottery win' is my brothers who show me affection in this small way." —u/Artz-Rhb 5."Apparently, I have enough room in my mouth that I can keep my wisdom teeth." —u/twinA-12 Related: 6."I have NO leg hair. Or arm hair. Literally NONE. I haven't had to shave in 26 years. Feels nice sometimes, not gonna lie." Apple TV —u/IrresponsibleSiren "I lost my leg and arm hair in my 30s. I don't remember exactly when, but on a sunny day I just noticed it and thought, 'Awesome!' Turns out I had thyroid cancer. Once I got it treated the hair came back. I still think about it though. I used to just touch my arms. They were so smooth!" —u/HeadstrongHound 7."Huge bladder (or just dull stretch receptors). Road trip champion!" —u/adrift_in_the_bay 8."I have no reaction to mosquito bites or poison ivy. No clue why." "Also, I'm genetically resistant to Norovirus, which would explain why literally everyone in my college dorm got it but me. I'm pretty sure my mom is too, as she was a kindergarten teacher and was often exposed to it (a wild amount of people send their kids who are vomiting to school), and she never got it." —u/themehboat Related: 9."My teeth are perfectly straight. No one believes that I've never had braces. I've also never had a cavity or any other dental work." —u/sarahsuebob 10."I don't need glasses." Troublemaker Studios / Dimension Films / Via —u/happy--muffin 11."I have clear skin. I don't get pimples often. 🌞" —u/Little_Owl114 12."I have absolute pitch, which is the ability to identify or re-create a given musical note without the benefit of a reference tone. I am not a musician so I am wasting it away." —u/cloudewe1 13."My immune system kicks butt. I am a kindergarten teacher. Kindies are renowned for being adorable and efficient little vectors of all kinds of disgusting contagion. In the past 11 years, I have taken only ONE sick day because I was actually sick." ABC —u/sometimes-i-rhyme Related: 14."I have very dense bones..." "I found that out when I had to have a hip replacement. When my doctor told me I have above-average density of my bones, I said, 'OH! So I really AM big-boned!' He turned and looked at me and flatly said, 'Yes, but you're fat, too.' He couldn't let me have that for just five —u/VividFiddlesticks 15."I have an epic beard and am freakishly strong. I guess the two go together when I'm cutting wood or doing other manly things." —u/WyldStalynz 16."My hair is brown, but my beard is red! I feel like that's pretty cool." —u/Jovian_Moons_97 "That means you are a carrier of the ginger gene! You could make a ginger baby with someone who also has the incomplete gene; they don't have to be ginger to have it! It shows in men through ginger facial hair often!" —u/gibgerbabymummy 17."I stay fit super easily; I live a healthy life and exercise often but particularly if I want to strength train, I gain significant size and definition within a few weeks. My army buddies said I just had to walk past the gym and I'd bulk. 😆" —u/beltfedfreedom 18."Everyone in my immediate family is very intelligent. We're all outshone by my little brother, though. He's one of those weird super-genius kids. Taught himself to read and write at about 2 years old, and now he does programming and 3D modeling at 11." —u/femboy_siegfried What d'you think? Michelle Obama Speaks Out on Barack Split Rumors

Former first lady Michelle Obama has addressed Barack Obama split rumors in a new interview. Newsweek reached out to former President Barack Obama's representative outside regular working hours on Monday. The Obamas wed on October 3, 1992, and share two children together: daughtersMalia Obama, 26, and Sasha Obama, 24. Michelle Obama did not attend former President Jimmy Carter's state funeral in January. She later announced that she would also not be attending President Donald Trump's second presidential inauguration alongside her husband. In January, Meghan McCain—the daughter of the late Republican Senator John McCain—said on her podcast Citizen McCain that she heard rumors the couple was getting a divorce "by reputable people." "Very serious journalists telling me that they're hearing that the Obama divorce rumors are true," she said at the time. During Thursday's episode of NPR's Wild Card with Rachel Martin, Michelle Obama dispelled divorce rumors. "Even in this phase in our lives, when Barack and I say something right or wrong, it does get covered," the former first lady said. "You know, the fact that people don't see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage. I mean, it's sort of..." Michelle Obama continued, before host Rachel Martin chimed in, "It's like the apocalypse!" "It's the apocalypse," the IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson podcast host agreed. "It's like, OK, so we don't Instagram every minute of our lives. We are 60. We're 60, y'all. We just, you just are not gonna know what we're doing every minute of the day, you know?" This isn't the first time Michelle Obama, 61, spoke out about breakup rumors. On an April episode of Work in Progress with Sophia Bush, the Becoming author addressed her absences at recent events. "When I say no, for the most part people are like, I get it. And that's the thing we as women struggle with, is disappointing people. So much so that this year, people couldn't fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume my husband and I were divorcing," she said. "This couldn't be a grown woman making a set of decisions for herself." Barack Obama shared in a May 11 post on Instagram: "Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms and mother-figures! @MichelleObama, the girls and I are so lucky to have you in our lives. We love you." The former president wished his wife a happy birthday in January via Instagram: "Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama. You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace—and you look good doing it. I'm so lucky to be able to take on life's adventures with you. Love you!" He also wished her a Happy Valentine's Day in February on the social media platform: "Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away. Happy Valentine's Day, @MichelleObama!" New episodes of Wild Card with Rachel Martin air weekly on platforms like YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson airs new episodes on Wednesdays on the same platforms. Moment Beyoncé Warns Crew About Concert Malfunction Caught on Camera

Beyoncé experienced a technical malfunction at her concert in Houston, Texas, over the weekend, and the moment she warned her crew about the mishap was caught on camera. Newsweek reached out to Beyoncé's representative and her company, Parkwood Entertainment, via email for comment on Monday. Beyoncé is currently on her Cowboy Carter tour. The "Texas Hold 'Em" singer, 43, announced the news in February following the release of her country-inspired album, Cowboy Carter, in March 2024. The malfunction took place on Saturday while Beyoncé was performing "16 Carriages." The 35-time Grammy Award winner rides on a red prop car over the audience during the song, but halfway through the track, the car stopped and tilted, prompting her to pause the show. "Stop. Stop, stop, stop, stop," Beyoncé said as the crowd quieted. "Thank you for your patience." After the car was lowered safely to the ground, the Destiny's Child alum added: "I wanna thank y'all for loving me. If ever I fall, I know y'all will catch me." On X, formerly Twitter, fan @limegreenroger posted a video of Beyoncé appearing to eyeball her crew ahead of the incident. "I think I got when Beyoncé caught the malfunction and tried to signal the camera QUICK," he wrote. At the time of publication, the clip racked up more than 1.5 million views and over 1,100 likes. This isn't the first time Beyoncé endured a malfunction during a live performance. In 2023, she had a wardrobe malfunction on her Renaissance World Tour in Detroit. While singing her tune "Break My Soul," the mom of three-who shares daughter Blue Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir with her rapper husband Jay-Z-had to fix one of her gold boots that slid down her leg. Following Saturday's technical difficulty, Parkwood Entertainment said in a statement shared to their Instagram Story, per Good Morning America: "Tonight in Houston, at NRG stadium, a technical mishap caused the flying car, a prop Beyoncé uses to circle the stadium, and see her fans up close, to tilt. She was quickly lowered and no one was injured. The show continued without incident." Beyoncé referenced the malfunction in several Instagram posts after the concert: "I love you, Houston," she wrote in one note and added, "Sittin' Sidewayz," in another. Beyoncé resumes her Cowboy Carter tour on Friday in Washington, D.C. The tour first kicked off at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium in April, and it ends in Las Vegas on July 26.
