Pat Stanton still bears the scar after his encounter with world great
Hibs legend Pat Stanton has enjoyed many games against top European opposition under the Easter Road lights. But one game in particular left him with more than memories after an encounter with one of the finest players in the world. Speaking on an emotional night when the East Stand was officially renamed the Pat Stanton Stand in his honour, he recalled: 'We played a friendly against Real Madrid here and that was something,' 'You had Ferenc Puskás and a lot of real good players. That was tremendous. 'I can remember I wasn't long in the Hibs team at the time. I went in for a tackle in the midfield against Puskás. But he came in a bit late – and he went over the ball, and he caught my ankle. 'We beat them that night, we beat them 2-0 and sitting in the dressing room after the game, Tom McNiven got the bandages out. 'I said: 'Where are you going with that?' He said: 'To sort your ankle, to wipe it. 'I said: 'No, I don't want anybody to touch that.' He said it needed cleaning. 'I said: 'Well, what I want, Tom, is to walk along Niddrie Mains Road tomorrow morning and I'll stop strangers and say: 'You know who did this? 'I've still got the mark on my ankle, still got it. I didn't want anybody to heal it; I wanted to wander about ruining my mother's good carpet!' Stanton who led the team in the 1972 League Cup final victory over Jock Stein's Celtic in addition to two Drybrough Cups admitted to getting emotional at the sight of his name up on the rebranded east stand. 'The only time my name was out there, it was in the referee's book' he joked. 'It's tremendous, it really is. I said to my family: 'I'll still talk to you!' But it's great, really terrific. 'I've been here a long time, and you get something like that, and you think of all the lads you played with. It's very humble about the whole thing because it's great.' Real Madrid was just one of the European giants that graced the Easter Road turf during Pat's tenure. He was part of the side that hammered Naples 5-0 and Sporting Lisbon 6-1, beat Bob Paisley's Liverpool 1-0 and lost on penalties to Don Revie's Leeds United. He also scored against Italian giants Juventus in a 4-2 defeat. Ladbrokes Scottish Premiereship – Hibernian v Celtic. Easter Road Stadium, 28/09/2019. Celtic and Rangers Champions League play-off dates confirmed
The Champions League play-off dates for Celtic and Rangers have been confirmed by UEFA. The draw in Nyon on Monday morning laid out the possible path to the September group stages for both Old Firm sides. Celtic went into the seeded Champions Path side of the draw and will hope to reach the revamped group stages once more. Last season, they emerged from the single 36-team table with a 21st-place finish. The Parkhead side were knocked in heartbreaking fashion after Bayern Munich scored in injury time to win their play-off tie 3-2 on aggregate. They will face either Kairat or Slovan Bratislava in the play-off, with the first leg at Parkhead, on Wednesday, August 20, and the return leg a week later on Tuesday, August 26. To reach the play-off stage, Russell Martin's side must first defeat Viktoria Plzen, whom they host on Tuesday night, before the return leg on August 12. Rangers have been drawn against Austrian side RB Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium, and could face them on Tuesday, August 19, with the return leg a week later on Wednesday, August 27. The winner of the third round tie will play the first leg at home. Celtic, and Rangers, should they get there, will be allowed to postpone their Scottish Premiership fixture scheduled between both legs of the play-off tie following an SPFL rule change. Former England star Joe Hart in shock career revelation after almost turning pro in another sport
FORMER England star Joe Hart reveals he could have become a professional cricket player. The shot-stopper, who retired last year following a spell at Celtic, was a handy left-arm seamer in his day. 3 3 3 His talent saw him picked up by the Worcestershire academy but Hart decided football would be a better career path. Hart, 38, was also part of the Shrewsbury Town set-up in his youth and began to be selected for the matchday squad before he had even sat his GCSEs. The former keeper recently appeared on BBC Test Match Special where he revealed his cricketing past. He said: "I played at a good level. I was part of the Worcestshire academy when that first started to come about. "But I was always playing a lot of football as well and this was the time when cricket wasn't just in the summer it was becoming an all-year round type of sport so it was difficult." Hart was asked if someone sat him down to discuss his options as a teenager, but he revealed the decision to pursue football was one he made, and really it was a no brainer. He continued: "I was a lot further down the line (in football). I was playing for Shrewsbury Town in League Two and I was involved with the first-team from 14, 15-years-old. "They had more of a structure, so when you turn 16 you sign schoolboy forms and you almost train professionally. "You're a professional footballer from 16 so that pathway was there. They were very encouraging, I had been on the bench when 14/15. "I just felt there was more of a pathway there for me football wise and cricket's a really difficult sport to be in. You have to be at a top top level just to make a living in the game. Guehi & Eze to STAY at Palace? Transfer Blow for Liverpool & Arsenal! "And I don't think I was that good. I was decent, like many people out there, but was I going to go to the next level? I don't know. And in football it felt like I had a lot of people who knew a lot about me telling me I need to stay in this sport because you've got a chance." Hart once showed off his talents in a game of cricket with his Tottenham team-mates in 2020, and he bowled Harry Kane. And one of his former pals at Worcestershire, Jack Shantry, believes he would have made it as a cricketer. The former Worcestershire bowler said: "He could have gone further, definitely. "This isn't with any faux humility, but he was a better cricketer than me at the same age. If he wanted to, he could have made it." Ed Foster, another teammate at club level and with Worcestershire's academy, adds: "If he'd have carried on and had the glut of cricket that you can get if you want it from 17 through to 19 or 20, I'm sure he would probably have been in and around the England Under-19 setup – and who knows where he would have gone from there? "He had all the raw materials, and where he's got to in football shows he's got enough between his ears to be able to put his physical aspects to good use. "I'm sure he would have given himself an opportunity, for sure."
