Hunter Brown's latest Detroit homecoming coincides with a Tarik Skubal showdown

New York Times3 hours ago
DETROIT — Hunter Brown was in fifth grade when a classmate at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School won a contest. Justin Verlander and Detroit Tigers infielder Carlos Guillén visited the elementary school. Inside a small classroom, a young Brown got a picture with the ace he idolized.
Years later, Brown became teammates with Verlander on the Houston Astros. He showed Verlander the picture.

'I don't think he was too fond of how old it made him feel,' Brown joked at his locker Monday.
All these years later, Brown still holds his Detroit identity close to his heart. He can rattle off memories of the Tigers teams he watched growing up in suburban St. Clair Shores. Magglio Ordóñez's home run to send the Tigers to the 2006 World Series. The electricity every time Joel Zumaya stepped on the mound. Jered Weaver's jawing with Guillén after a bat flip in 2011. Austin Jackson's getting traded in the middle of a game. All those and more still flow through his mind.
He attended Detroit's Wayne State University as an unheralded college player. He blossomed into a top prospect with an undeniable fastball. The Astros selected him in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. In 2022, Brown pitched his second MLB game in Detroit, and he held the Tigers to two runs over six innings. He started that game as a young up-and-comer with so much left to prove.
Brown still keeps a residence in the Detroit area. He's been known to walk his dog, Whiskey, around the downtown streets and even around Comerica Park. He still trains at 2SP Sports Performance in Madison Heights. He keeps in contact with his friends from high school and remains loyal to New York Deli off 10 Mile Road. If you hope to bump into a big-leaguer in metro Detroit during the gray of winter, it is more likely to be Brown than it is any active member of the Tigers.
Brown has pitched in Detroit twice more since that first outing. He has a lifetime 2.81 ERA in Comerica Park. He even faced the Tigers during last year's playoffs in Houston, a game that ended up marking the end of the Astros' season.
Now, Brown is prepping for his latest Detroit homecoming. Friends and family will fill the stands. And something about this one feels different.

This time, Brown will pitch not as a touted prospect or a rising stud but instead as the owner of a 2.45 ERA and one of the premier pitchers in the sport. He will happen to face off against Tarik Skubal, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, one of few pitchers who could stand in the way of Brown's claiming his own piece of hardware.
'Detroit ties are cool,' Skubal said. 'It would be cooler if he was wearing our jersey.'
In Tuesday's matchup, there is something at stake, both for the pitchers who will step on the rubber and for the teams they represent. The Tigers and Astros are among a handful of teams vying for the top two seeds in the American League. Entering Tuesday's matchup, the Tigers held the No. 1 seed, just a half game up on the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Astros are clinging to a small lead in the AL West. But if the season ended today, they would be headed to another three-game snakepit in the AL Wild Card Series.
The atmosphere, then, could be terse as two of the league's best pitchers square off. Skubal's and Brown's lockers were near each other during this year's All-Star Game. They chatted briefly. They observed one another going about their work and their routines. There is mutual respect among such stalwarts.
'He's got good stuff, pitches in the zone, strikes guys out, kind of does everything that you want as a starting pitcher,' Skubal said. 'It's why he was at the All-Star Game this year, and that's why he's got the numbers he's got.'
'What's really not to like?' Brown said of Skubal. 'The guy throws a bunch of strikes. Doesn't walk people. Reigning Cy Young (winner). So he's doing his thing. But I know the guys will come out ready to try to jump on him and put us in a position to win the game.'
Skubal is no stranger to such matchups. He faced off against Zack Wheeler on ESPN's 'Sunday Night Baseball' earlier this month. He started opposite Paul Skenes at the All-Star Game. He is a fan of the sport and enjoys watching other elite starters from the dugout.

But when he's throwing in the same game as a pitcher such as Brown, there might be less of an appreciation for pitching artistry as it unfolds.
'Really good pitching, I really don't like to pitch against it,' Skubal said. 'I'd rather sit in the dugout and watch the guys go because when I'm going against (it), I'm worried about how many outs are in the inning. I'm not really worrying about how they're getting it done.'
Skubal and Brown were underrecruited high schoolers who have blossomed into two of the league's finest pitchers. Skubal's upbringing in the small town of Kingman, Ariz., helped tell the story of a pitcher who was overlooked until he morphed into must-see TV.
Brown's Detroit roots fed into the narrative of a pitcher who was nobody until he became somebody.
Even as he tries to best Brown on Tuesday, Skubal has an appreciation for the moment. He has pitched in front of old college friends in Seattle, in front of immediate family in Arizona and in front of other relatives in California.
For Brown, this is another homecoming, albeit with the stakes a little more magnified.
'You get to throw in front of family and the people that you don't see because you play this game,' Skubal said. 'You get to play this game and perform in front of them, and it kind of makes all those sacrifices worth it.'

Trey Hendrickson contract dispute: Bengals star still at odds with team over guaranteed money

The Cincinnati Bengals sure looked like a team in need of a defensive playmaker Monday night. The team pulled off a 31-17 win against the Washington Commanders in Week 2 of the NFL preseason, but turned in an all-too-familiar performance in the victory. Without star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, the Bengals' starting defense was ripped apart by a Commanders run game that didn't even feature last year's starter. Brian Robinson Jr. was held out of the contest due to trade talks. Without him, the Commanders still managed to run the ball down the throat of the Bengals' starting defense. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Washington's first seven plays were runs, five of which went for at least 10 yards. It was a disappointing showing, especially considering the Bengals are currently locked in a contract stalemate with their best defensive player. Hendrickson spoke to ESPN's Laura Rutledge about his contract situation Monday, and while he offered some hope about a future deal, he made it clear there's still one major issue preventing him from joining the team. Hendrickson said he and the Bengals are close on annual salary and length of his next contract, but the team's unwillingness to give him guaranteed money remains the sticking point. The Bengals are reportedly willing to guarantee money for one year of Hendrickson's next contract, but won't extend the guarantees beyond that. Until they are willing to grant that, it sounds like Hendrickson is willing to remain on the sideline. The issue could be resolved before the start of the season, but it sounds like it could be close. When asked about Hendrickson's contract after the game, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow said the Bengals typically wait until close to Week 1 to hammer out a deal with players seeking new contracts. The 30-year-old Hendrickson is seeking a new deal after leading the league with 17.5 sacks last season. It was the second straight season in which he's racked up 17.5 sacks. Since joining the Bengals in 2021, Hendrickson has blossomed into one of the best pass rushers in the game. He's made the Pro Bowl in each of the four seasons he's spent with the team, and is set to enter the final year of the contract. Hendrickson initially signed a four-year, $60 million deal with Cincinnati ahead of the 2021 NFL season. He inked a one-year, $21 million extension with the team in 2023 that will go into effect this season. Throughout the entire offseason, Hendrickson made it clear he wanted to secure a long-term deal to stay in Cincinnati. He has not taken part in team training camp as he waits out the team. While Hendrickson's reported comments Monday seem to suggest progress has been made on his next deal, the pass rusher is still willing to draw the line on the issue of guaranteed money. All the usual caveats apply about it being a preseason game, but the Bengals' performance against the Commanders early Monday night probably gave Hendrickson a little more ammunition in his future negotiations with the team.

WNBA power rankings: The Las Vegas Aces are turning their season around in a big way. How have they done it?

As the WNBA went into the All-Star break, one of the biggest questions looming over the league was what was wrong with the Aces, who won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023 but looked lost and frustrated at 12-12. They looked like they could even be in danger of not making the postseason for the first time since 2018. Fast forward about a month, and the Aces are the second-hottest team in the WNBA. They are 8-2 in their last 10 games, just behind the league-leading Lynx's 9-1 record in their last 10. Las Vegas has jumped up to the fifth spot in the WNBA standings, virtually tied with No. 4 Phoenix and just a half-game behind New York. All of a sudden, they're within striking distance of playoff home-court advantage. Most importantly, the Aces are playing with the same joy that characterized their championship runs. The Aces are a fun team to watch, and they seem to have found that fun on the court again. So how did they do it? Let's break it down: Moved Jewell Loyd to the bench The Aces made one of the biggest moves of the offseason in trading for Loyd from the Storm. On a supermax contract, she's the highest-paid player on the Aces roster, but she just was not producing as a starter. On July 25, she scored zero points in 20 minutes. It was a bad enough game that she asked Aces coach Becky Hammon to get moved to the bench. On July 27 against Dallas, Kierstan Bell started over Loyd, and Loyd scored 20 points off the bench. Since then, she's had just one game where she didn't score in double figures, and her playing time hasn't dropped significantly. Loyd is shooting 45% from the field and 43% from behind the arc in 10 games off the bench compared to 36% and 35% in 25 games starting. It's not easy for a superstar like Loyd to make this kind of move, nor is it easy for Hammon to move the team's biggest investment to the bench. But making that change has helped the team. Started the NaLyssa Smith renaissance At the end of June, the Aces made a move to strengthen the team's frontcourt, trading a draft pick to the Dallas Wings for NaLyssa Smith. She had a promising start to her career in Indiana in 2023 and 2024, but was languishing in Dallas, where she was traded during the offseason.. In Las Vegas, Smith was quickly added to the starting lineup over Kiah Stokes. She's now tallied three double-doubles in 19 games, shooting 53% from the field (compared to 42% in Dallas) and grabbing an average of 6.2 rebounds per game (she had 4.9 in 18 games in Dallas). Smith has also taken pressure off A'ja Wilson in the paint. Speaking of … They let A'ja be A'ja Three-time MVP A'ja Wilson famously puts pressure on herself for not just her performance, but also that of her teammates. But with Loyd playing with the team's second unit, and having more support in the frontcourt, Wilson can be herself. She's scored at least 30 points in three of the Aces' last four games, including a historic 30-point, 20-rebound performance, the first in WNBA history. She's not forcing things; instead, Wilson is playing free and leading her team to wins. She even summed up the difference with a crude but accurate analogy. Performer of the week: Kelsey Mitchell, Indiana Fever Connecticut led by as much as 21 points in its loss to Indiana on Sunday. The reason a shorthanded Fever squad came back to win the game? Kelsey Mitchell. She scored 38, tying her career high, including five 3-pointers and going 11 for 12 at the free throw line. Game of the week Minnesota Lynx vs. Atlanta Dream, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime: While Tuesday's final regular-season meeting of the Lynx and Liberty is interesting, Minnesota's Thursday matchup features the top two teams in the league. Every individual matchup should be fun to watch, but Courtney Williams vs. Allisha Gray is the one to keep an eye on. Gray is in the MVP conversation, and the two were teammates on the Lunar Owls in Unrivaled and know each other's games well.
