MCD continues drive, says no plan to release stray dogs caught so far
The Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules permit it to keep such dogs under observation for 10 days, it added.
"We are adhering to the court's direction dedicatedly and will continue our drives against diseased and attacking dogs, based on the complaints received from the residents on the 311 app, helplines or zonal numbers. We have enough space to keep them and get them treated too through veterinary doctors, if required.
We can take help from volunteers as well," said mayor Raja Iqbal Singh.
The civic body said it has no plan to release the stray dogs caught recently, as there is no specific order from the court in this regard. "We are providing them proper food and care," said an official.

According to officials, if aggressive dogs need to be shifted permanently to shelter homes, ABC norms will have to be changed. They added that they had made a submission in this regard to Delhi govt earlier.

In a meeting held earlier this month, the chief secretary had directed to proceed in establishing shelters and achieve 70-80% sterilisation within two months. According to officials, aggressive dogs can continue to be furious after sterilisation too.
"ABC rules do not permit keeping dogs in shelters permanently and relocating them to other places. To keep them under observation for a longer tenure, there is a need for amendment in the ABC rules, which can be done by Centre only," said an official.
MCD recently formed a subcommittee and involved dog lovers and other stakeholders to look at the stray menace.
"In recent meetings, we recommended various sites for establishing dog shelters and pounds, including Ghogha where we have 82 acres of land available and Dwarka where a 2.5-acre space is available. But we can't keep aggressive dogs permanently there unless there is provision in the ABC rules," said the official.

Tree fall backs up traffic for 2 hours on Valpoi-Ponda road
Valpoi: A mango tree came crashing down on the Valpoi-Ponda road at Savarshe, Valpoi, on Monday morning, disrupting rush hour traffic for over two hours and resulting in a major snarl. Indoreans take up brooms to keep swachh city spick & span
Indore: In a unique display of civic responsibility, public representatives and people of the cleanest city in the country picked up brooms to clean up the city as sanitation workers enjoyed their Goga Navami holiday on Monday. The initiative was part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga - Har Ghar Swachhta Abhiyan'. Urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, MP Shankar Lalwani and mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav led the drive, sweeping the streets at Rajwada. Madurai corpn launches ‘Ezhil Koodal' to clean up city hotspots
1 2 Madurai: Seeking to improve its poor ranking in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 survey, the Madurai Corporation has launched the 'Ezhil Koodal' initiative under the theme "Namma Sutham, Namma Perumai" (Our Cleanliness, Our Pride). The project aims to turn select areas into model clean zones through sanitation drives, beautification, and citizen participation. As part of the plan, 24 high-footfall 'hotspots', including bus stands, markets, and main roads, have been identified for round-the-clock maintenance. Extra sanitation workers, volunteers, and tractors have been deployed zone-wise to keep these areas litter-free. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan said the effort goes beyond cleaning. "We are working with residents' associations to clear identified areas and gather feedback. Awareness drives are also being held to discourage dumping on vacant land. Afternoon and night cleaning shifts are being introduced to handle commercial waste," she said. Assistant city health officer Abisekh said the initiative combines symbolic and practical steps.
