Telangana marks National Handloom Day with calls to support weavers; address industry woes
From senior political leaders to university officials and district authorities, several voices came together in support of indigenous artisans, urging policy implementation and public participation.
At a programme held in Pochampally, former Haryana governor and senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya assured handloom weavers that he would take their concerns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and strive for their resolution. He pointed out that weavers across the country are struggling due to rising yarn prices, shortages of raw materials, poor marketing facilities, and insufficient livelihoods.
In Karimnagar, Collector Pamela Satpathy informed handloom weavers about quarterly health check-ups, eye screenings, surgeries, and health cards for weavers, along with up to Rs 10 lakh in medical aid under the Aarogyasri scheme.
Meanwhile, at an event in Hyderabad, JNTU Vice-Chancellor Prof T Kishen Kumar Reddy called upon citizens to wear Khadi and handloom clothing as a true expression of the 'Vocal for Local' initiative.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Wednesday launched a counterattack on the Congress, questioning its alleged attempt at 'vote-chori' by reportedly seeking inclusion of Sonia Gandhi's name in the electoral roll years before she was granted Indian citizenship. In response to the Congress's criticism of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) system and its allegations of electoral malpractice, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya took to 'X' (formerly Twitter), saying, 'Sonia Gandhi's tryst with India's voters' list is riddled with glaring violations of electoral law.' He wrote, 'This perhaps explains Rahul Gandhi's fondness for regularising ineligible and illegal voters, and his opposition to the SIR. Her name first appeared on the rolls in 1980 — three years before she became an Indian citizen and while she still held Italian citizenship. At the time, the Gandhi family lived at 1, Safdarjung Road, the official residence of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Until then, the voters registered at that address were Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and Maneka Gandhi.' Tagging a copy of the requisition slip for adding Sonia Gandhi's name, Malviya claimed, 'In 1980, the electoral rolls of the New Delhi parliamentary constituency were revised with January 1, 1980, as the qualifying date. During this revision, Sonia Gandhi's name was added, appearing at serial number 388 in polling station 145'. He alleged in the post, 'This entry was a clear violation of the law, which requires a person to be an Indian citizen to be registered as a voter. Following an outcry in 1982, her name was deleted from the list — only to reappear in 1983. But even her reinstatement raised serious questions. In the fresh revision of the electoral rolls that year, Sonia Gandhi was listed at serial number 236 in polling. Thakur's vote theft charge Ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur alleged voter registration irregularities in Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Diamond Harbour, and Kannauj. He accused Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Akhilesh Yadav of winning through 'vote theft.'

SIHS colony ROB completion pushed to September
COIMBATORE: Locals and motorists in Singanallur, SIHS Colony, and Ondipudur areas have voiced frustration over the prolonged delay in completing the much-awaited SIHS Colony rail overbridge (ROB). Despite repeated assurances, the project's finish date has been pushed once again - this time to September 2025. The 700-metre-long flyover, being built by the State Highways department at a revised cost of Rs 55 crore, is allegedly 95% complete. Officials say the only pending work is paving bitumen on approach roads, which they expect to be completed by September 15. However, residents point out that the pace of work has slowed to a crawl, undermining earlier commitments to wrap up the project by August. The ROB, meant to ease congestion between Ondipudur and SIHS Colony, has had a chequered history spanning nearly 15 years. It was first announced in November 2010 by then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi with an outlay of Rs 19.24 crore. However, the 2011 change in government saw the project stall. In 2013, it was revived with a revised budget of Rs 21.16 crore, but soon hit another roadblock with land acquisition disputes for the service road. As land owners took the matter to court, the project was put on hold yet again. While about 70% of the work, including 90% of the bridge structure, was completed, further progress was contingent on settling compensation. The deadlock ended in September 2021 when the DMK government allocated an additional Rs 29.4 crore for land acquisition. Of this, Rs 28.37 crore was paid to 63 landowners, allowing the department to resume work in February 2023.

Tejashwi, Bihar Deputy CM lock horns over twin EPIC cards
PATNA: Verbal exchanges between Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav have heated the ongoing political row over double EPIC cards in the state. On Wednesday, Sinha displayed his matriculation and higher education degrees to prove he was 57 and counter Yadav's allegations about age discrepancies. Yadav had earlier alleged that Sinha was registered as a voter in both Lakhisarai and Patna districts and claimed inconsistencies in the deputy CM's age records. He also alleged that Sinha's age was listed as 57 in one constituency and 60 in another, calling it an 'age scam'. Sinha contended that he had already deleted his name from the Patna voters' list. Referring to Tejashwi Yadav as the 'Yuvraj of Jungle Raj', he asked him to present his degrees and explain 'how Tejashwi Yadav became 26 and his brother Tej Pratap 25 in 2015?' Tejashwi Yadav also alleged that Nirmala Devi (Sahu), a prominent BJP leader and mayor of Muzaffarpur, possessed two EPIC IDs and she, along with her brothers-in-law, had votes at two different booths. The Election Commission has issued notices to them in this connection.
