Tamil Nadu to drop use of ‘colony' to denote SC habitations from government records
Making the announcement in the Assembly while replying to the demands for grants for the police department, the CM said the word had historically been used as a euphemism to label and degrade indigenous and marginalised communities and their habitations. Official sources said a detailed order would be issued shortly to outline the procedure for implementing the directive across departments and local bodies.
The move echoes a similar order issued nearly five decades ago. On October 3, 1978, to mark the birth centenary of social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy, the government led by the then CM, M G Ramachandran, passed a G.O. to remove caste names from streets.
VCK seeks more respectful suffix in community names
The order directed all municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats to adopt resolutions to that effect. However, enforcement has remained patchy over the years.
The CM also said that a committee headed by a retired HC judge would be formed to study the implications of the Supreme Court's 2019 verdict and the issues that are likely to arise in the future in preparing the merit list for the state government's recruitment process.
The CM said this in reference to the representation given by VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan and party MLA M Sinthanai Selvan, requesting reservation for SCs/STs in promotion. Welcoming the decision on 'colony', Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) general secretary and MP D Ravikumar said the removal of the term had been a long-standing demand of the party. 'A new G.O. should also be issued to remove caste references from educational institutions and hotels,' he said.
VCK also demands that the suffix '-n' (often used in caste contexts) in community names be replaced with the respectful '-r,' reflecting dignity and equality, Ravikumar said. Retired IAS officer Christudoss Gandhi recommended replacing the term 'colony' with 'kudiyiruppu' or 'oor', which denote residential areas in Tamil.

Dharmasthala secret burials: BJP MLAs seek interim report, allege bid to defame Hindu religious site
BJP MLAs on Tuesday asked the Karnataka Government to release an interim report on the Dharmasthala secret burials case, with one of them alleging a continuous effort to defame a Hindu religious site under the pretext of the ongoing investigation. Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Assembly, BJP MLA V Sunil Kumar said, 'If we look at posts on social media platforms and statements issued by some people, it is clear that Dharmasthala is the target.' 'While the whistleblower in the case had identified five to six spots where bodies were allegedly buried, today they have exhumed around 15 to 16 locations,' the MLA said. 'We have learnt that, prima facie, nothing was found.' Urging the Government to put an end to rumours surrounding the case, Kumar said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) cannot go around digging up any number of sites just because someone comes and complains. The SIT on Tuesday inspected the 13th spot identified by the whistleblower, a former sanitation worker in the temple town. Till date, the SIT has recovered remains of two skeletons. 'Action should be initiated against those making false claims about the temple town. The home minister should release a statement regarding the progress of the investigation (by the SIT),' MLA Kumar said. Home Minister G Parameshwara then informed the House that the investigation was progressing. 'After the probe reaches a stage, the SIT will submit a report,' he said, recalling that the SIT was set up on July 19 to investigate a police complaint filed by the whistleblower. BJP MLA Suresh Kumar said that though Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had said that the district police were capable of investigating the case, it was handed over to the SIT due to demands from Left groups. Rao objected to the claim, saying that several groups had petitioned seeking an investigation. 'We are unbiased. We are not supporting anyone. We only want to bring out the truth,' the minister said. Parameshwara, meanwhile, said that until the SIT submitted its report, nothing about the investigation could be discussed in the Assembly. However, BJP legislators sought a discussion on the issue and demanded the home minister ask for an interim report from the SIT.

Madurai collector flags off vehicles for doorstep delivery of ration
Madurai: District collector K J Praveen Kumar on Tuesday flagged off delivery vehicles for the Thayumanavar scheme that was launched earlier in the day by chief minister M K Stalin. The scheme ensures home delivery of ration items to elderly and disabled ration card holders. He also handed over ration supplies to beneficiaries at Alathur village in Madurai north taluk Later, the collector inspected development works carried out in Tirumangalam municipality. He reviewed the 2.77-crore renovation project at the bus stand. The project includes construction of bus bays, an entry arch, seven shops, an office, staff rest area, a milk feeding room and toilets for men and women. The collector then visited a park on Muhamadhusapuram East 4th Street and instructed officials to repair damaged play equipment, improve landscaping, and install gym facilities to make it a model public space.
