IMD issues heavy rainfall alerts, rain could affect I-Day celebrations
In view of Wednesday night's torrential rainfall in state capital Lucknow, District Magistrate Vishak G has ordered all schools from Classes 1 to 12 to remain closed on August 14.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current monsoon spell is set to intensify in western Uttar Pradesh from Thursday, with an orange alert for very heavy rainfall issued for Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Bijnor.
Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh of the Regional Meteorological Centre said that after the intense showers in eastern UP and the Terai region, western UP is expected to receive significant rainfall on Thursday and Friday.
Twenty districts, including Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Kasganj, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal, Budaun, Jalaun, Jhansi, and Lalitpur, are under a yellow alert for heavy rain, while thunderstorm and lightning warnings have been issued for 36 districts.
Several districts in the Terai belt -- Maharajganj, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, and Shahjahanpur -- witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall on Wednesday.
Unnao received a staggering 150 mm rainfall, Bareilly 140 mm, and Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, and Barabanki each recorded 120 mm.

Highest single-day Aug rain in 8 yrs ups city score
1 2 Lucknow: The city recorded highest single-day rainfall of Aug in eight years between 8.30am on Wednesday and 8.30am Thursday. Earlier, 161.8mm rainfall was recorded on Aug 28 in 2017. Total rainfall recorded at the Met observatory in Amausi during this period was 120mm. The bulk of the rainfall (117.3mm) was between 8.30pm Wednesday and 8.30am Thursday. Light to moderate showers may occur in the coming days. The city has received good rainfall in Aug so far. As a result, rain score that was 25% below normal till July 31, climbed 44% points to 19% above normal Thursday. Total rainfall in the city in monsoon season so far from Jun 1 till Thursday was 499.1mm against the normal of 417.9mm set for the period. Over 45mm rainfall in 24hrs, more on Indore horizon: Met
Indore: Persistent showers from Wednesday night through Thursday evening soaked Indore, marking the city's heaviest spell in weeks. The downpour brought a much-needed boost to the otherwise sluggish August monsoon, with several areas experiencing continuous heavy rain through the night and intermittent spells during the day. From Wednesday night till 5:30 pm on Thursday, the city recorded 45.1 mm of rainfall. Eastern parts of Indore saw bright sunshine in the morning, while western areas reported intense rain, causing waterlogging in low-lying pockets. The spells of heavy rain in the city on Thursday led to traffic snarls at key junctions such as Bhanwarkuan, Palasia, Robot Square, Vijay Nagar, GPO, and LIG Square. Waterlogging in low-lying stretches slowed vehicle movement, with two-wheelers particularly struggling through flooded lanes. According to the meteorological office, Thursday's maximum temperature was 27.8°C, noticeably lower than Wednesday's 30°C, and one degree below normal. The minimum was 21.5°C, also a degree lower than average. Humidity hovered between 94–95% through the day. From Wednesday late night till Thursday early morning at 8:30 am, Indore registered 31.2 mm of rain.
