Has Marvel shot itself in the foot by bringing superfreak Sentry into Thunderbolts*?

The Guardian02-05-2025

Is there ever a right time to introduce into your superhero universe a psychologically unstable god-being with the potential to sneeze a continent off the map? It is probably not when – 17 years in – you are being accused of having lost half your audience to superhero fatigue. But that's exactly what Marvel is doing this weekend as Thunderbolts* brings us Sentry, quite possibly the freakiest superhero to ever grace the comic book publisher's hallowed pages. You thought Rocket Raccoon was weird and unhinged? Reckon Moon Knight is a bit of a handful? This guy makes them look like well-adjusted professionals with decent pensions.
Sentry first appeared in 2000 in The Sentry miniseries which offered a sort of meta-commentary on superhero mythology; the character was initially presented as a forgotten Silver Age icon, retconned into Marvel history via an elaborate in-universe memory wipe that made everyone forget he existed – including himself. A glowing, golden powerhouse with the 'power of a million exploding suns' he suffers from crippling anxiety, addiction, and the inconvenient tendency to transform into a malevolent entity known as the Void, a living embodiment of all his worst fears and impulses. Imagine Superman, if he cried after every rescue, kept forgetting he had a dog, and occasionally blacked out and levelled entire cities.
In Thunderbolts*, he's initially known as Bob, a dishevelled, twitchy presence who, soon enough, finds himself plunged into the middle of Marvel's latest motley crew of antiheroes, reformed villains and government-sanctioned liabilities. Without giving too much away, it's fair to say that Sentry may end up playing a far larger role in the next phase of Marvel's cinematic sprawl than any of his teammates, if only because he has more raw power in the tip of his fingernail than the rest of them do in their combined emotional baggage.
At a time when Disney would probably pay good money to stick the entire multiverse in a box and relaunch with just Iron Man and a really good trailer, Marvel has chosen instead to hand us a deity-level eccentric with apocalypse issues. For that, you have to give the studio credit, even if it's a bit like a tightrope walker setting the rope on fire just as the insurance team shows up with a clipboard.
The real question here is how this is going to pan out long-term, though the smart money is on Sentry being depowered just enough to ensure he doesn't completely overwhelm the narrative of every Marvel episode he appears in. This has happened in the comics: in World War Hulk, the superhero's battle with the not-so-jolly green giant was so intense that Sentry ended up reverting to his frail human form; in King in Black, he swooped in like a golden deus ex machina, only to be torn in half mid-monologue by Knull, a symbiote god with the vibe of a heavy metal album cover. To add insult to evisceration, the Void (Sentry's destructive dark side) was absorbed into Knull's own symbiote arsenal.
Will Sentry end up playing a huge part in the twin Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, now due in 2026 and 2027? Could it even be he who decides to rip all our superheroes from their own realities and send them to Battleworld in the latter – a role originally taken in the comics by the Beyonder, and later by Doctor Doom? The superhero otherwise known as Bob Reynolds certainly has the power to shape Marvel's reality in his own image if he really wants to.

Leave our period dramas alone!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any article about Jane Austen must begin with a mangled, platitudinous variation on her most famous line. Irritating though this is, it's rather a good metaphor for the state of the wider treatment of Austen – and her near contemporaries – by popular culture. When it comes to adaptations of novels from the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods, and even longer ago, we find ourselves in a deep trough. If you want mangled, platitudinous variations, you now need look no further than today's costume dramas. And this year being the 250th anniversary of Austen's birth, we should brace ourselves for a barrage of them. Many of those behind the upcoming slough of modern takes on Austen et al hardly inspire confidence. Jane Tranter, the producer of a new adaptation of Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister – a Pride and Prejudice spin-off – complained the other day that 'the other thing with period costumes is, you start speaking posh and not everybody spoke posh in those days… So sometimes it's about a loosening around the fetishisation of a period.' This only ever works one way, of course. There aren't many characters in EastEnders who sound like the Duke of Kent. Yet, if everyone 'speaking posh' is as Ms Tranter says, then it has merely been replaced by other fetish-isations, ones even less rooted in historical reality or even creative believability. Perhaps the most egregious example of contemporary obsessions overtaking historical dramas is the recent Disney+ adaptation of the late C.J. Sansom's Matthew Shardlake series of Tudor mysteries.

PS5 exclusive Marvel fighting game coming from Guilty Gear creators

Sony's big State Of Play surprise was Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new superhero fighting game from Arc System Works. While rumours were rampant about a new God Of War spin-off and a reveal for Resident Evil 9, Sony closed its State Of Play presentation with something completely unexpected. Developed by Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ creators Arc System Works, in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation Studios, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag team fighter which puts a distinctly Japanese spin on its famed superheroes. As seen in the trailer, confirmed characters so far include Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), all with pretty incredible anime-inspired designs. While past Marvel fighting games like Marvel Vs. Capcom have sported 3v3 match-ups, the unique hook here is the jump to 4v4. However, as noted in a Marvel blog post about the game, this apparently doesn't mean you'll have to master four characters to have a fighting chance, with the system promising to be flexible to your playstyle. Michael Francisco, senior product development manager at Marvel Games, said: 'Learning four characters is extremely daunting, but the team at Arc System Works has found a way to design a system that adapts to your playstyle. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. 'So you could either duke it out as just the leader and three assists, or you can tag in your assist to swap the leader and change the match-up on the fly.' How this works in practice remains to be seen, but it certainly looks impressive, with all the flashy animation and anime stylings developer Arc System Works is known for. More Trending It was stated that more characters will be added later (c'mon Squirrel Girl!) and revealed in the 'coming months' but whether they'd be part of the starting line-up or something available only as DLC remains to be seen. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls ('tōkon' translates to 'fighting spirit' or basically someone that's good at fighting) is set to be released on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2026. Normally Sony doesn't release console exclusives on PC straight away, but whether this is the start of a new policy, or just a reflection that it's not made by an internal studio, is unclear. Elsewhere in the State Of Play, Sony announced its very first fight stick for PlayStation 5 and PC called Project Defiant, which is set to launch sometime in 2026.
