Owen Cooper becomes youngest ever Emmy nominee

Express Tribune15-07-2025
British actor Owen Cooper has made Emmy history, becoming the youngest-ever nominee in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology category. The 15-year-old newcomer received the nod for his gripping role in Netflix's Adolescence, where he played Jamie Miller, a troubled teen arrested under suspicion of murder.
Cooper's raw, one-take performance in the gritty drama marked his acting debut, impressing critics and industry veterans alike. His co-star, Stephen Graham, even compared his talent to that of a young Robert De Niro. Adolescence, directed by Philip Barantini, has emerged as one of the year's breakout limited series and landed a total of 13 nominations.
Cooper breaks the record previously held by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when nominated in 1972 for That Certain Summer. His fellow nominees include Ashley Walters (also from Adolescence), Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Bill Camp and Peter Sarsgaard (both for Presumed Innocent), and Rob Delaney (Dying for Sex).
Final voting for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards runs from August 18 to 27, with winners announced during the Creative Arts ceremonies on September 6 and 7, followed by the main awards on September 14, broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
Cooper's recognition signals a generational shift in prestige TV, as younger actors continue to break through in increasingly complex roles. His performance also underscores Netflix's growing influence in the limited series category.

Joe Locke wraps Heartstopper finale filming: 'Bye Charlie'

Heartstopper star Joe Locke has officially wrapped filming on the highly anticipated finale of the hit Netflix adaptation, signaling the end of an emotional journey for fans of the show. Locke shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing 'Bye Charlie X' alongside behind-the-scenes images with co-star Kit Connor, thanking fans and the creative team behind the series. The final chapter of Heartstopper, based on the sixth volume of Alice Oseman's beloved graphic novel series, was adapted as a film instead of a traditional season. Directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) and written by Oseman herself, the finale has been in production for nearly two months. Kit Connor also confirmed the wrap via social media, closing the book on Nick and Charlie's story. In the final chapter, the couple faces the challenges of a long-distance relationship as Nick prepares to leave for university and Charlie gains new independence at school. Their emotional journey mirrors the personal growth of their circle of friends as they navigate love, change, and letting go. Speaking to The Playlist, Locke explained that filming a feature-length finale was a practical decision. 'We realized the only way to get it made this year is if we do a film… It makes it feel more cinematic and gives it the ending it deserves,' he said. The Heartstopper finale film now moves into post-production, with fans eagerly awaiting its release and one last goodbye to Charlie and Nick's coming-of-age story.

Happy Gilmore 2 director reflects on unexpected early plot twist involving Virginia Venit's character

Director Kyle Newacheck has shared his initial reaction to the surprising plot development at the start of Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered on Netflix on July 25. Speaking to PEOPLE, Newacheck revealed he was unaware of the major storyline involving Julie Bowen's character, Virginia Venit, until reading the completed screenplay. 'I did not see that coming,' he said. 'I would never have projected that that was going to be the inciting incident for this movie at the start of it.' Virginia, now married to Happy Gilmore and mother to their five children, is killed off in the film's opening moments after being struck in the head by a golf ball hit by her husband. Newacheck noted that the choice made sense in context. 'It's still within the DNA of the universe,' he said, referencing the original 1996 film in which Happy's father dies after being struck by a hockey puck. Bowen also addressed the plot in an interview, recalling her reaction when reading the script while on holiday. 'When I found out that I was killed on page 12, I started laughing,' she said. Despite the outcome, she was pleased to be part of the sequel. 'Of course, why would I not want to be part of Happy Gilmore?' She added that Adam Sandler was committed to involving original cast members in the sequel. Happy Gilmore 2 is currently available to stream on Netflix.
