'Segulai sejalai' key to Kapit's development, says Nanta
KUCHING (July 28): Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called on all quarters in Kapit to embrace the spirit of 'segulai sejalai' (working together as one team) to ensure that the division continues to prosper in tandem with other parts of Sarawak.
In a Facebook post following the Kapit Division Thanksgiving and Appreciation Night last night, Nanta stressed that past political disunity had hindered development efforts in the area.
He pointed out that when politics was fragmented and not united as a team, development was slow and difficult to implement.
'Now, with politics under one roof through Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and elected representatives cooperating well, Kapit has made remarkable progress. Although the people still yearn for more development, we have come a long way, and going much closer to realising the dream we once had,' said Nanta, who is also GPS secretary-general.
He added that stable politics and close collaboration among elected representatives allow government agencies and departments, supported by community leaders and village heads (KMKK), to carry out their duties more effectively and smoothly.
Reflecting on changes in leadership and priorities over the years, Nanta noted that previous administrations had focused more on industrialisation, often at the expense of rural areas.
'But now, the focus has shifted significantly. In fact, Kapit is becoming the envy of other areas, thanks to the strong cooperation among all stakeholders,' he remarked.
He urged for this spirit of teamwork to be maintained to ensure development continues to reach every corner of the division.
The event also saw Nanta presenting tokens of appreciation to retiring civil servants and those who have been transferred to other postings.
'To the retirees, I express my heartfelt gratitude for their service. And to those who are moving on to new places, I hope they gain valuable experience and carry the good image of Kapit with them,' he said.

Govt finalising talks on Mex II project, Dewan told
PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya is currently finalising discussions with the Receivers and Managers (R&M) of the Maju Expressway (Mex II) to find the best solution for completing the stalled extension project, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. According to Nanta, the discussions focus on a solution to complete the project, considering various aspects, including the project's cost, traffic impact analysis, toll rates, cash flow management, and other factors necessary to ensure the project's sustainability. 'The plan and direction of the Mex II project will be coordinated by a Central Agency together with the relevant Ministries or agencies, particularly regarding the financial model, taking into account the appropriate parameters for the assessment of the project's viability, including technical aspects, will be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration,' he said. Nanta stated this in a written parliamentary reply dated July 31, in response to Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong), who had asked about updates on the Mex II project, including whether the concessionaire requires government approval for claim applications. She also inquired about the funding required for the project's completion and whether additional funding would result in higher toll rates. According to Nanta, the Mex II project was entirely borne by the concessionaire through the build-operate-transfer (BOT) method. 'All project progress confirmation, including progress claims, is reviewed and verified between the contractor, concessionaire, supervision consultant and independent checking engineer, which are submitted directly to the sukuk party,' said Nanta. 'Therefore, the progress claims for this project do not involve approval at the federal level, since it involved private financing,' he added. Mex II is a planned three-lane dual carriageway designed to connect the MEX Putrajaya interchange to the KLIA highway. The project began construction in 2016, and it was initially scheduled for completion in December 2019, but was halted due to financial issues. The 18km extension project of the Mex II also came under scrutiny recently following a graft probe into allegations of false claims involving RM360mil. Four individuals, including a Datuk Seri, were previously detained in connection with investigations into funds raised through sukuk issuance for the project. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had said 61 witnesses had been called in to assist with investigations In early May, the MACC seized various assets, including luxury vehicles, designer handbags, jewellery and cash totalling RM32mil from an individual with a Tan Sri title. This followed reports that MACC had opened three investigation papers related to bribery and false claims involving the Mex II project.

Meanwhile, another 30 projects are still under construction, while 20 more are in the planning stage. 'These figures are only for Sarawak. Across Malaysia, there are many more under the same initiative, which falls under the 12th Malaysia Plan and includes continuation projects,' he told reporters when met after officiating the handing-over ceremony of the completed infrastructure upgrade project at SMK Sri Sadong in Simunjan today. The project at SMK Sri Sadong involved the construction of 12 replacement classrooms, five units of teachers' quarters, and various other supporting facilities, with a contract value of RM28.73 million. 'This is one of 76 projects across Sarawak under the programme to rebuild and upgrade dilapidated schools,' Nanta explained. He expressed appreciation to the contractor for fulfilling their responsibilities effectively, noting that the project was completed smoothly without any major issues. 'I would like to thank the contractor for carrying out their duties well. The project was completed without any problems,' he said. Nanta also thanked the JKR Special Project Team 2 (PPK2), led by Dato Ir Jasmi Wahab, for their role in ensuring the contractor fulfilled their responsibilities as expected. 'We are also grateful for the cooperation from Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee and Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris. Special thanks as well to the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE) for approving the project,' he added. Commenting on inter-agency cooperation, Nanta said the collaboration between the Ministry of Works (KKR), JKR Malaysia, and MoE has long been established. 'We've handled tens, hundreds, if not thousands of projects together. Our role as a delivery partner through our technical expertise in KKR and JKR is to support the client ministries,' he said. 'In this case, for schools, the client is the Ministry of Education. If it's a hospital or clinic, it would be the Ministry of Health. And so on with other ministries.' He emphasised the importance of KKR and JKR's involvement, particularly in physical development projects involving roads and buildings. 'We are the leading technical agency in the country. JKR houses many experts, and that's why we have been able to shoulder this responsibility successfully over the years,' he said. Also present at the event were MoE Secretary of the Development Division Datuk Masyati Abang Ibrahim, JKR Deputy Director-General (Infrastructure Sector) Mohd Shahrom Ahmad Saman, Rodiyah, Awla, as well as officials from various ministries and relevant agencies. alexander nanta linggi lead projects school upgrade

MAG's Boeing Jet Purchase Not Linked To Tariff Talks, Minister Clarifies
The recent aircraft purchase by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) from Boeing was a long-planned business decision, not a concession linked to tariff negotiations with the US, the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz clarified. He explained that the purchase was made using MAG's own funds and is not in any way related to the tariff discussions with the US government. 'This is a commercial decision made in line with MAG's fleet renewal strategy, not one driven by diplomatic pressure or public spending,' he said in a Facebook posting on Aug 2. The minister also noted that the Boeing deal had been announced as early as March 2025, well before the US imposed any new tariff on Malaysian exports. 'At the time of the announcement, there was no indication from the US about imposing new tariffs. To suggest the aircraft order was a reaction to tariffs is simply not accurate,' he said. However, Tengku Zafrul acknowledged that Malaysia had strategically highlighted large-scale purchases from American companies, including MAG's aircraft deal, during negotiations to demonstrate the country's role as a significant trade partner to the US. 'By showing that Malaysia also imports high-value products from the US, we helped shift the narrative away from a one-sided trade surplus. 'This helped convince US authorities to revise the tariff rate downward from 25% to 19%,' he explained. He described the move as a 'smart and calculated' approach that protected both corporate interests and national economic priorities. 'The MAG-Boeing deal was never about appeasement. It was about demonstrating that Malaysia is a responsible and reciprocal trading partner while staying true to the commercial viability of every decision,' Tengku Zafrul said.
