Trump turns on MAGA members demanding more information about Epstein
Trump brought up some of his favorite nemesis – the Russia probe he calls 'Russia, Russia, Russia' and former FBI Director James Comey – accusing Republicans demanding the release of Epstein files of participating in a partisan errand. 'Some stupid Republicans and foolish Republicans fall into that net, so they try and do the Democrats' work,' Trump said. Trump defended his AG Pam Bondi, and gave her verbal permission to release certain materials.
'Whatever is credible she can release. If a document is credible, if a document's there that is credible, she can release,' Trump said. 'He's dead. He's gone,' Trump said of Epstein, who Trump knew socially in Palm beach during the 90s before suffering a break. 'All it is the Republicans – certain Republicans – got duped by the Democrats. And they're following a Democrat playbook,' Trump said.
Although Trump backed up Bondi, he didn't do the same for FBI Director Kash Patel, who like his deputy Dan Bongino helped fuel the Esptein controversy before joining the administration. 'I can't speak about him, but I can say that Pam Bondi, I really think that she's done very good,' Trump said. His comments are the latest effort to shut down the issue, amid a bubbling MAGA civil war over the topic, amid splits over his attack on Iran and sudden U-turn on arming Ukraine.
Trump hasn't been able to make his most fervent supporters forget about his administration's Jeffrey Epstein files failure – no matter how hard he tries. The president insists Democrats are to blame for stoking conspiracies about the disgraced financier and convicted child sexual offender – even though his MAGA base is the most vocal in their claims about Epstein's suspicious death and the existence of a list of co-conspirators. Trump on Wednesday again begged his supporters to move on and said those giving into the 'Epstein hoax' are part of a group of his 'past supporters.'
'The Radical Left Democrats have hit pay dirt, again!' Trump wrote on Truth Social, likening Epstein conspiracies to their past capitalization on the 2016 election interference investigation and fake claims Hunter Biden 's laptop was a Russian disinformation campaign. The Justice Department and FBI released a memo this month concluding the initial findings that Epstein killed himself in prison are true and that there is no such list of clients who engaged in the child sexual trafficking ring. The MAGAverse immediately was up in arms over the Epstein files review, claiming it was a failure or even a cover-up within the DOJ to protect high profile individuals.
Among the latest to turn against Trump is podcaster and comedian Andrew Schulz , who unleashed a viral rant against the president for his 'failed' Epstein promises. Schulz hosted Trump on his podcast in October in the weeks leading to the election, but is now admitting he's disappointed by his second term so far. 'I wanted something different,' he said. 'I was hoping for some sort of change.' In the week-and-a-half since the memo went public, Trump has repeatedly tried to get his supporters to stop demanding more answers about the investigation, claiming the case is closed.
He has defended Attorney General Pam Bondi and said Democrats made up the conspiracies, which he now calls the 'Jeffrey Epstein Hoax,' to divide Republicans. 'These Scams and Hoaxes are all the Democrats are good at - It's all they have,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on Wednesday. 'Their new scam is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my past supporters have bought into this '[expletive],' hook, line, and sinker.' Trump claims those who used to support him have been tricked by Democrats into believing Epstein conspiracies and are now working against him.
'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore!' Trump said. The president's base, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, were among the pro-MAGA voices who pushed conspiracies that Epstein was murdered in jail and that he held a 'client list' that he used as blackmail. The Wednesday post comes after Trump made another lengthy plea on his Truth Social over the weekend for his 'selfish' supporters to move on.
'We're on one Team, MAGA, and I don't like what's happening,' the president lamented in the Saturday post. 'We have a perfect Administration… and 'selfish people' are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.' Epstein died in prison on August 10, 2019. Trump said the Epstein 'hoax' was conjured up by Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan. He said it was up to them to release the files.

Alex was curious to know if the reality star could still maintain a relationship with her father in the wake of her allegations, but Huda claimed she hadn't spoken to him in eight years. She said: 'I stopped talking to him when I was 16. There's a really valid reason as to why I'm not speaking to him.' Huda added: 'There were a lot of times when I was alone with my dad, and there's things my family doesn't believe me about,' which elicited a small gasp from Alex. The Love Island star kept a smile plastered on her face even as she began to cry and daubed at her eyes with tissues. Republicans play coy about Trump-Epstein news: ‘I don't know anything about it'
The story from The Wall Street Journal that President Donald Trump reportedly sent a birthday card with a picture of a naked woman to Jeffrey Epstein rocked the House of Representatives late on Thursday evening. The House had gone into overdrive to pass a bill that would claw back appropriated money for foreign aid and public broadcasting, including NPR and PBS, that the president demanded from Congress. But the news that Trump had reportedly sent the card to the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender created another headache for Republicans, many of whom have pushed for the declassification of files related to Epstein's trafficking of underage girls. 'I don't know anything about it,' House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told The Independent as he headed onto the floor before the vote. Trump vehemently denied the story, saying on Truth Social that he would sue The Wall Street Journal, NewsCorps, and Rupert Murdoch 'shortly.' In addition, Trump said that he would instruct Attorney General Pam Bondi to release certain files related to Epstein and grand jury testimony 'subject to court approval.' Prior to the vote on the floor, the House Rules Committee held a markup to prepare the legislation for final passage. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) asked for The Wall Street Journal report to be added to the record of the markup. However, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), a member of the hardline Freedom Caucus, pushed back. 'The president is saying it's artificial intelligence,' he said. 'That will be proven in due time.' The news is just the latest wrinkle in the saga surrounding Republican fixation about Epstein's trafficking and death in custody. Earlier this month, the Justice Department released a two-page memo saying that Epstein had no 'client list' and that he died by suicide. This came despite the fact that Bondi had pledged on Fox News that she had files related to Epstein ' sitting on my desk right now to review.' The Republican majority on the committee voted down an amendment by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), the top Democrat on Rules, to declassify memos related to Epstein. Instead, the committee's Republicans passed a non-binding resolution calling on the Department of Justice to release information related to Epstein. McGovern dismissed the efforts as 'such a pathetic attempt at ass-covering.' 'I mean, they don't even have a date to bring it up,' he told The Independent. 'They're gonna find out that voters are paying attention, and they're not easily bulls***ted.' When asked why Republicans voted down the amendment in committee, Rules Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) pushed back. 'Because we had our own,' she told The Independent. 'We had our own need... we didn't need that.' When asked about The Wall Street Journal's report, Foxx remained silent. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), who represents a district Kamala Harris won, was initially silent and threw up a hand when The Independent asked him about the story, and then said 'no' when asked again. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), another member of the hard-right Freedom Caucus, said he did not know if House leadership would put the bill up to a vote. 'Go talk to those guys,' he told The Independent. When asked about why the House GOP voted against the amendment in committee about Epstein, Roy said, 'Because we had a resolution.' Other Republicans attempted to strike a balance. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), who leads a task force that focuses on declassification of federal secrets, referred to a tweet where she drew a stick figure and said, 'I hope you guys don't show this to The Wall Street Journal. They might think I'm a sex trafficker.' 'I think that President Trump announced that he's going to be suing The Wall Street Journal because it was not his artwork,' she told The Independent. She also said she trusted Bondi. Ahead of the recissions Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) attempted to force a vote on his amendment to disclose information on Epstein, but Republicans blocked the effort. 'Isn't it striking that they aren't even putting that for a vote,' Khanna told The Independent about the non-binding resolution put forth by Republicans. 'I would have thought at least put that for a vote, but they're so afraid of offending the president.' Republicans might not be able to avoid voting on Epstein matters. Khanna and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a sharp critic of Trump, co-sponsored a discharge petition. If a majority of members sign a discharge petition, it can go to the floor for a vote without going through the committee process. So far, conservative members like Reps. Nancy Mace (R-SC), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Tim Burchett (R-TN) all support it. Earlier in the day, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said he would also sign onto it. 'The stakes are high, but I'm betting, 'yes,'' Raskin told The Independent. But a discharge petition must ripen for seven legislative days before it goes to the floor. Khanna accused House Republican leadership of bolting early to lengthen amount of time for the petition to 'ripen.' 'They're trying to avoid that and then they're hoping that the momentum is lost during the August recess, but this issue is not going away,' he said. After the vote, Johnson, the pious Christian conservative who once said he and his son monitor use an app to monitor whether the other watched pornography, spoke to reporters in a gaggle. He received only a few questions about the recissions package, while almost every other reporter asked him about Trump and Epstein.

Europe has been ‘free-riding' on US security, says Merz
Friedrich Merz has admitted that Europe has historically underfunded its own security and instead relied heavily on the United States. The German Chancellor met with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in the UK on Thursday to sign a treaty on a range of issues, such as defence and immigration. On his first trip to London as chancellor, Mr Merz described the Kensington treaty as historic. It is the first major bilateral agreement between the UK and Germany to deepen defence cooperation and boost economic growth in both nations. Russia's war in Ukraine has defined the first two months of Mr Merz's chancellorship, as has Donald Trump 's tariffs on the EU. The German Chancellor said he has met with the US president three times now and they are 'on the same page' on Ukraine – both wanting to bring an end to the war. But he admitted that Europe had not historically funded its own security in the past. "We know we have to do more on our own and we have been free-riders in the past," he told the BBC. 'They're asking us to do more and we are doing more." Asked about his relationship with Mr Trump, he said: "We are on the phone once a week; we are coordinating our efforts. One issue is the war in Ukraine, and the second is our trade debates and tariffs." "We are seeing a big threat, and the threat is Russia. And this threat is not only on Ukraine. It's on our peace, on our freedom, on the political order of Europe," he told the Today Programme. Mr Merz said he would do 'whatever it takes' to boost Germany's defence spending and increase the size of its army. At a press conference on Thursday, Mr Merz and Sir Keir discussed ways to boost European support for Ukraine, following Trump's announcement to bolster Kyiv 's stockpile by selling American weapons to Nato allies who would in turn send arms to Kyiv. This includes Patriot air defence missiles Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently sought. Mr Merz said they had discussed Ukraine's need for long-range strike systems, which he called "long range fire". "Ukraine will soon receive substantial additional support in this area," he told the press conference. The treaty includes a clause on mutual assistance which, "in light of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, is highly significant", a German official said this week. He said that 'above all, we need clarity on how weapons systems that are given up from the European side will be replaced by the US.'
