What do so many Dream Team managers see in Micky van de Ven?
At the time of writing, he's the second-most selected defender in the game, with an ownership of 17.7%.

Until very recently the Tottenham centre-back was the outright most popular player in his position but Liverpool's Jeremie Frimpong (£5m) has claimed top spot in the wake of his (accidental) goal in the Community Shield.
MOST POPULAR DREAM TEAM DEFENDERS (% OWNERSHIP)
18.3% - Jeremie Frimpong (£5m)
17.7% - Micky van de Ven (£3.5m)
16.7% - Marc Cucurella (£4.5m)
13.7% - Virgil van Dijk (£5.5m)
13.1% - Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.5m)
13% - Myles Lewis-Skelly (£4m)
10.5% - William Saliba (£5m)
8.5% - Reece James (£4m)
7.9% - Kyle Walker (£2.5m)
7.7% - Josko Gvardiol (£5.5m)
Here at Dream Team HQ we like Van de Ven just as much as the next man.
He's lightning fast and a very capable defender; who could forget his acrobatic goal-line clearance in the Europa League final?
But the Dutchman's immense popularity is a curiosity.

For all his obvious attributes, Van de Ven has not earned all that many Dream Team points since his arrival on English shores in the summer of 2023.
A succession of hamstring injuries have limited him to just 40 league appearances out of a possible 76.
This wouldn't be such a concern if he racked up returns for fun when fit but the truth is his numbers are moderate at best.
Last season, Van de Ven averaged four points-per-game when available.
For perspective, that puts him just below Michael Keane (£2.5m), Joel Veltman (£3m) and Emmanuel Agbadou (£3m).
On paper, Van de Ven and Cristian Romero (£3.5m) is a formidable centre-back pairing but the duo have found clean sheets harder to come than most expected.
That's not to blame them directly, it takes a team effort to repel the opposition, but clean sheets are the primary currency for Dream Team defenders and so such facts must be noted.

The 24-year-old doesn't rank highly for attacking threat either, he's scored seven goals throughout his whole club career.
Perhaps Dream Team bosses are expecting Spurs to be tighter at the back this season.
They couldn't afford to be much looser without entering a relegation battle.
It's entirely feasible that regular playing time for Van de Ven does result in fewer goals conceded but Thomas Frank is hardly the shut-up-shop type.
In 2024/25, only Southampton allowed their opponents more shots than his Brentford side — that doesn't exactly scream clean sheets.
Maybe we're overthinking it.
It might simply be the case that Spurs are at home to Burnley in Gameweek 1 and Van de Ven is relatively affordable at £3.5m.
And that's fair enough but a quick look forward reveals that the Europa League holders are due to face Manchester City at the Etihad in Gameweek 2.
Gaffers keen on defensive returns should try to avoid selecting players directly up against a striker of Erling Haaland's (£7.5m) calibre.
We're more than happy to be proved wrong by Van de Ven, he's certainly a good enough player, but starting the season as the second-most selected defender?
It just doesn't add up.

Man Utd lose thrilling league opener to Arsenal after Altay Bayindir blunder
Altay Bayindir's blunder handed Arsenal victory and undid a positive Manchester United performance in Sunday's pulsating Premier League encounter. Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Ruben Amorim's side fell to a 1-0 defeat as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. The back-up goalkeeper was outmuscled by William Saliba as he attempted to deal with a Declan Rice corner, tipping it on for the defender to nod into an empty net and silence Old Trafford after a bright start. Bayindir's error underlined concerns over the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford, where often unconvincing number one Andre Onana was absent as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, with Patrick Dorgu hitting a post with a lasered first-half effort. Arsenal keeper David Raya produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay, with his man of the match of the display helping Arteta's side to victory. The atmosphere was as intense as United's start as they flew out the blocks in the summer sun, with Mbeumo getting an early attempt on goal as the hosts bossed play and the early possession. But Arsenal would take the sting out of proceedings with just 13 minutes on the clock. Bayindir flapped at Rice's inswinging corner under pressure from Saliba, with the Turkey international meekly palming on for Calafiori to head over the line. United's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears as Arsenal scored their 31st Premier League goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 campaign – 11 more than any other team. That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached. Arsenal were solid but unspectacular when the second half got under way, with Arteta replacing ineffective debutant Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark. The Sweden international had shone under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and had previously been linked with a move to United, whose fans cheered his substitution. United's new frontman Benjamin Sesko was introduced to a huge roar shortly after, offering a tantalising first look at their rebuilt front three. Cunha continued confidently and Mbeumo was a handful, with an acrobatic attempt soon followed by a header that forced a full stretch save from Raya. Sesko nodded across the face of goal as the home side continued to knock on the door, but Arsenal dug deep and Rice saw a whipped free-kick deflect narrowly wide at the other end. United pushed until the end and Cunha saw a penalty claim ignored, but there was no leveller as Arteta's side started the season with a win as '1-0 to the Arsenal' echoed around the ground.

'Indefensible' - Joe Hart slams Man Utd star after Arsenal defeat
Joe Hart slammed an 'indefensible' error from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after Manchester United's opening Premier League defeat to Arsenal. Arsenal, who were potent from set-pieces last season, scored from their first corner of the season after Bayindir flapped at an inswinging delivery from Declan Rice. Riccardo Calafiori was standing in the six-yard box more out of hope than expectation but was able to nod the ball over the line following Bayindir's mistake, that came following slight pressure from William Saliva. Reacting to the goal, ex-England goalkeeper Hart said on BBC Radio 5 Live: 'I immediately got ready to defend Altay Bayindir, and then I saw the first replay and thought, 'I can't defend him here'… 'Personally, I like to have my own defender in front of me so I can use him as a shield against an attacker and that's not the option they've gone for. 'Saliba has done enough, but not done too much. Ideally, he wants to punch that with his right hand. He has got far too involved and got lost and made a bit of a mess with it. 'It's not a foul. Bayindir has got to scrap with his left arm to deal with Saliba and jab the ball away with his right.' Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison also criticised 'weak' Bayindir after Arsenal broke the deadlock inside 15 minutes at Old Trafford. Morrison also said United should be looking to sign a new goalkeeper before the summer transfer window closes. The Red Devils were linked with Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma earlier in the summer. But Amorim looked set to keep his faith in Andre Onana for this season, although he then dropped him for the opening game against Arsenal. "You get in his face!" Roy Keane says Man United were not aggressive enough in defending the corner that Arsenal scored from 🔊 — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 'Altay Bayindir – weak! He's looking at everyone else to blame,' Morrison said. 'Man United have a problem with their goalkeeping. 'You have to be strong. It is weak goalkeeping. Manchester United need to strengthen their goalkeeper. 'There are top goalkeepers around that are available and you're only as good as your goalkeeper.' Old Trafford legend Gary Neville also suggested his former club needed to invest in a new goalkeeper before the transfer deadline. 'The goalkeeper has got to be stronger,' he said on Sky Sports. 'He will complain that he was fouled. 'He has a player in front of him, there is a lot of pushing and pulling, but he has to be stronger. 'I don't think Saliba has done anything wrong and the ball just goes through Bayindir's hands and Calafiori is there to profit. It's going to keep hurting United.' More Trending Onana's absence against Arsenal was initially thought to be fitness-related but Amorim confirmed the Cameroon international was fit. 'He's not injured, he's recovered… but the other players did well during pre-season, so I have to find a balance,' he said in his pre-match interview. 'Next week, it will be a different story. This week, we chose these players.' Manchester United return to action next weekend with a trip to Fulham, while Mikel Arteta's Arsenal play host to Premier League new-boys Leeds United. Man Utd and Liverpool enter transfer race for Republic of Ireland international
Manchester United and Liverpool have joined Tottenham in a transfer race to sign Brentford and Republic of Ireland defender Nathan Collins. Collins, capped 30 times by his country to date, is wanted by all three Premier League clubs before the summer window closes on September 1. The 24-year-old joined Brentford from Wolves in a £23m deal in 2023 and the Irishman has made a total of 78 appearances for the Bees so far. United, Liverpool and Spurs are 'all targeting a move' for the Collins with interest in the Brentford captain 'surging', according to the Daily Mail. The Red Devils have already signed Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford this summer and are hoping to convince Collins into a switch to Old Trafford. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. But United need to sell players before they can make an approach for Collins having already spent around £215m on new recruits this summer. Spurs and Liverpool are also keen on Collins – with both clubs seeking defensive reinforcements in the current window. Collins played under Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank at Brentford which could give them a potential advantage in the race for the Irish star. Liverpool, though, may be tempting given they're the Premier League champions and could arguably offer him the best chance of winning silverware this term. It remains to be seen which club Collins would prefer to join – but he does have a family connection to Liverpool given his father was a player at the club from 1988 to 1992. Collins may ultimately decide he wants to stay at Brentford, where he is currently working under the management of ex-Republic of Ireland international Keith Andrews. It should also be noted that Brentford may well be highly reluctant to sell Collins, who is under contract at the Gtech Community Stadium until the summer of 2029, having signed a six-year deal in 2023. Brentford have already lost key players this summer and could be set for a battle to keep their spot in the Premier League. The west London club have no need to cash in on Collins given the length of his current contract. More Trending Brentford boss Andrews is a huge fan of his Irish compatriot, having described him as a 'natural leader'. 'Nathan's someone I've known since he was around 14 years of age, coaching some of the Ireland youth teams,' Andrews said earlier this month. 'He's always been a natural leader, he's gained a lot of experience considering the age that he is, and he's developed his professionalism to a new level because he's been involved in this environment for a couple of years and has learnt from some great people. 'He communicates very well, he's got really good values, on and off the pitch, and, naturally, players gravitate towards him – he has respect from all the players and staff, which is a key attribute to have.'
