IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'I'd play rugby with that' – Stuart Broad ridicules Dukes ball as shape controversy erupts at Lord's

Stuart Broad (Video grab)
Former England fast bowler
Stuart Broad
has sparked fresh debate around the quality of the Dukes ball used in the ongoing India vs England Test series, dramatically claiming he would rather "play rugby" with one of the rejected balls used during the third Test at Lord's.

The third Test has seen multiple ball changes across the first two innings, with players from both sides voicing their concerns about the ball going out of shape too quickly. After Day 3, the discussion found its way into the Sky Sports, where Broad, alongside
Michael Atherton
, examined one of the balls deemed unfit for play.

Atherton began by questioning the decision to change it: "Got a ball from this game that was changed. That one did not go through the gauge and was deemed to be unsuitable. Now, my view is that that's a perfectly good ball to bowl with... I think they're being precious on that point. What do you think?"

Broad though didn't hold back: "Well, I'm outnumbered with three batters and one bowler.
I would play rugby with that. I'd be rolling that to the umpire and it would sort of go, bonk, bonk, bonk. I mean, the reason it's out of shape is because it's soft and I can squeeze that. I can squeeze that even more out of shape."
Poll
Do you agree with Stuart Broad's assessment of the Dukes ball quality?
Yes, the quality has declined.
No, the ball is still good.
Not sure.
He added that such balls become ineffective for both bowlers and batters alike: "It gets a bit of an ugly shape on the top. When that's hitting the pitch and the surface, it's just dying on the surface. It's not going to react off the surface.

You need the harness of the seam to grip and move... even to be able to play a lovely cover drive and hit the ball for four."
Highlighting the change in playing conditions over time, Broad noted: "It's frustrating for a batter when you hit it through the covers... it rolls for two or three when it should've gone for four. First 10 years of my career, I can't remember changing a ball ever. It's a new thing. Maybe the ball quality, in my opinion. Yes."
The Dukes ball is now under the scanner - and Broad's blunt assessment has only intensified scrutiny.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'He needs to...' - Anil Kumble claims only one player can help India win the Lord's Test

London: India's batters Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul run between the wickets during the third day of the third Test match between India and England, at the Lord's Cricket Ground, in London. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI07_12_2025_000295B) India and England will take to the pitch at Lord's with a simple goal in mind. The hosts need to take six more wickets, while the visitors need 135 more runs to win. With Day 5 of the 3rd Test set to commence, India need their batters to deliver. While India managed to end England's second innings impressively at 192, their batters also faced a roadblock. Ben Stokes ' side's relentless attack with the ball saw India lose Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck, after which main man Shubman Gill and Karun Nair also departed cheaply. Nightwatchman Akash Deep lost his wicket to captain Ben Stokes, leaving KL Rahul at the crease. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Ahead of play on Day 5, former India star and captain Anil Kumble singled out a player who can steer India's hopes and lead them to victory. 'KL Rahul is going to be the main man (for India). If India are to go past this total tomorrow, he needs to be there till the end — not just give India a good start,' Kumble said on JioHotstar. 'This is going to be a very important knock. If India have to cross the line, KL Rahul will have to play a major role,' said the veteran. Washington Sundar press conference: On Gautam Gambhir's support, last over drama, winning at Lord's With Rahul at 33 from 47 balls and Rishabh Pant coming in, the partnership between the two will also play a huge role in whether India will gain the advantage heading into the penultimate Test. Analysing the potential partnership, Kumble said, 'India had a great chance. They did really well to restrict England to 192 and then got to 41 for 1. I thought Yashasvi Jaiswal played a very poor shot early in his innings, but Karun Nair and KL Rahul batted well to get to that 41. Then once Karun got out and Shubman Gill followed, it's now slightly tilted back in England's favour. India will need a massive partnership from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant tomorrow.' The veteran also ruled out the possibility of a draw, asserting that either India or England will prevail. With the series balanced at 1-1 and the stakes higher than ever, Monday's action promises a fiery encounter. Ahead of the game, it was announced that Mohammed Siraj was fined 15% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for his aggressive celebration and making physical contact with Ben Duckett. Duckett, too, taunted Gill when he came on to bat, saying that scoring 600 is 'enough' for the captain in this series. Gill departed for just 6 from 9 balls — his lowest score yet in the series.
